You Think Spiders Are Scary? Here’s What Can Actually Live on, in and Around Them

Spiders really can host parasites and parasitoids, but the evidence is species-specific. Here’s how wasp larvae, nematodes, mites, microbes and egg-sac associates use spiders—and what black widows have to do with it.

Yes, spiders can host parasites and parasitoids—but “hiding inside” does not mean every spider contains a large worm. Documented examples include wasp larvae feeding on living spiders, mermithid nematodes inside certain Hawaiian spiders, mites on spider bodies, microbes that cause disease, and organisms developing in egg sacs or manipulating webs. These interactions are tied to particular species and places, not a universal condition of household spiders.

“Inside a spider” can mean several different things

Biologists separate these encounters by where the organism lives and what happens to the spider. A parasite may remain on the host’s exterior, live internally, or use a spider’s egg sac or web without residing in its body. A parasitoid is more specific: its immature stage develops on or in one host and normally kills that host.

Interaction Where it occurs Typical outcome Documented evidence
Parasitoid wasp larva On or within a living spider Feeds on host tissues and haemolymph; host usually dies Nature Index synthesis; Australian Museum account
Mermithid nematode Inside the spider Internal parasitic infection; host effects depend on the interaction USGS record from Hawaiian Tetragnatha
Mites On the spider or associated with it Infestation or developmental association; effects vary Australian Museum; 2025 FAPESP report from Brazil
Viruses, bacteria and fungi Within tissues or on the host Disease or reduced fitness, rather than a visible “worm” 2025 Biological Reviews synthesis
Egg-sac associates Inside or emerging from an egg sac May consume spider eggs or develop alongside them University of Florida records for widow spiders

Parasitoid wasps turn spiders into living nurseries

Some wasps deposit an egg on a spider or place it within the spider’s body. After hatching, the larva has a concentrated food source. The Australian Museum describes larvae feeding from the outside inward, often beginning near the softer pedicel where the abdomen joins the cephalothorax.

In several documented systems, the wasp does more than feed. The larva or adult wasp alters the spider’s innate behavior, causing it to build an unusual, reinforced structure called a “cocoon web.” That web can shelter the developing wasp after the spider is dead. The Nature Index synthesis identifies both tissue and haemolymph feeding and this kind of web-architecture manipulation.

Because the host’s death is a predictable part of development, “parasitoid” is the accurate term for these wasps. A dramatic photograph of a larva on a spider therefore shows a specialized life cycle, not evidence that spiders commonly carry such organisms.

Can a worm really live inside a spider?

Yes. Mermithid nematodes are genuine internal parasites of spiders, but the best-known evidence is geographically specific. A USGS report documented mermithids infecting Hawaiian Tetragnatha spiders and described the finding as the first report of these nematodes infecting spiders in Hawaii. The investigators also compared the nematodes molecularly using the 18S small ribosomal-subunit gene.

That record establishes a real host–parasite interaction in a named spider group. It does not establish that ordinary spiders everywhere contain nematodes, or that a long worm is waiting inside most spiders people find indoors.

Spiders also face mites and microscopic parasites

The Australian Museum lists diseases, fungal infections, mite infestations and worms among spider health problems. Many of these agents are too small to notice without magnification. A 2025 FAPESP report on Brazil described a second species of spider-parasitic mite and noted that some members of this group are known only from larval stages because adults become free-living predators.

A 2025 synthesis in Biological Reviews provides a useful broad classification: microparasites include viruses, bacteria and fungi, while macroparasites include larger invertebrates. This distinction prevents a fungal infection, a mite attached to a body surface and a nematode inside a spider from being treated as the same phenomenon.

Do black widows have parasites?

Widow spiders are not exempt from parasitic and parasitoid relationships. University of Florida documentation names Philolema latrodecti and Baeus latrodecti in association with widow spiders. The same documentation records Baeus emerging from southern black-widow egg sacs.

Sukh Sphagnum Moss for Reptiles - Green Terrarium Moss Substrate, 5oz
  • Moisture Retention - Moss is highly absorbent and retains moisture well, making it ideal for reptiles that tropical or require higher humidity levels environments. The sphagnum moss can allowing it to maintain moisture levels in the enclosure for an extended period, keep the humidity stable and prevents the substrate from drying out too quickly, provide natural and comfortable habitat for these reptiles
  • Hiding Spots and Nesting Material - Reptile moss can be utilized as a substrate for reptiles that require hiding spots or nesting material. It provides a soft and natural surface for reptiles to burrow into or lay their eggs, promoting natural behaviors. Additionally, moss can aid in shedding, providing a moist surface for the reptiles to facilitate the shedding process
  • Reptile Substrate - Moss can be used as a part of the substrate for snakes, turtle, frog and gecko, especially those that require higher humidity,it can provide insulation, providing a comfortable surface for reptiles to rest upon. peat moss cannot be used as a primary substrate. Snakes need a combination of mixed substrates such as some poplar shavings, and turtles, frogs, geckos and other reptiles need a combination of aquatic plants, rocks and other substrates such as sand or gravel
  • Sphagnum Peat Moss Widely Used - Sphagnum moss for reptiles can not only be used as reptile bedding materials , can also be used as egg laying and incubation medium, substrate for the bottom of reptiles and amphibians feeding boxes with certain humidity. It can also be used as a nutrient for orchids, ferns, and succulents, sphagnum moss for plants,as well as for succulent modeling, filling hanging basket lines, and decorating wreaths
  • Maintenance - Sphagnum moss for reptiles requires regular maintenance. It should be kept clean and moist, regularly replace the moss if necessary , but not overly wet, to avoid any health issues for your reptile

An egg-sac record is not the same as finding a worm inside an adult black widow. It shows that organisms can exploit the spider’s reproductive material or its immediate environment. Nor does it mean every black widow carries one of these wasps.

How common are these interactions?

Published field rates vary sharply by host species and location. A Costa Rican study that followed spider and parasitoid patterns for about two years reported the following mean parasitism values:

Spider host Location and study Mean parasitism
Theridion evexum Costa Rica; Barrantes, Eberhard and Weng, Revista de Biología Tropical (2008) 1.39%
Allocyclosa bifurca Costa Rica; same 2008 study 7.8%

The difference is a reminder that prevalence depends on the host, habitat and season. The study also found different seasonal patterns between the two spider species, so neither percentage should be generalized to all spiders.

What a frightening spider photograph can—and cannot—show

  • A visible larva may be a parasitoid wasp developing on the spider, not an internal worm.
  • An organism associated with an egg sac may never have lived inside the adult spider.
  • Web changes can be evidence of behavioral manipulation, especially in systems that produce a cocoon web.
  • Microbial infections and mites may be present without producing a conspicuous large object.
  • A single species record or field percentage cannot establish a universal condition for household spiders or all black widows.

The practical bottom line for curious observers

“Hiding inside” is a compelling headline, but the biology is more precise: spiders can be hosts, prey, nurseries or accidental partners for many organisms. The strongest documented examples cover parasitoid wasps, Hawaiian mermithid nematodes, widow-associated wasps, mites and microbial pathogens. Whether the interaction occurs inside the body, on the exterior, in an egg sac or through a manipulated web determines what it means—and how seriously it affects the spider.
