On October 29, 2024, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirmed H5N1 bird flu in one pig at a noncommercial farm in Crook County, Oregon—the first reported detection in a U.S. pig. The pig showed no signs of illness. Officials quarantined the farm and tested the other pigs; USDA said the finding did not threaten the commercial pork supply.
What happened at the Oregon farm?
The pig was one of five at a noncommercial, backyard farm where poultry and livestock shared water sources, housing and equipment. Officials tested the pigs after H5N1 was found in poultry and other animals on the premises. One pig tested positive, two tested negative, and results for two others were initially pending. The pigs were euthanized to support additional diagnostic analysis, and the farm was quarantined. USDA’s October 29 announcement describes the detection and response.
Why does H5N1 in a pig matter?
Pigs can be infected by influenza viruses circulating in pigs, people, birds and other species. If two influenza viruses infect the same pig, they can exchange gene segments in a process called genetic reassortment. That can produce an influenza A virus with new or different properties. Reassortment in pigs is believed to have contributed to the 2009 H1N1 pandemic, according to the CDC’s October 25, 2024 update.
This makes the detection important for surveillance and evaluation of how influenza viruses evolve. It does not, by itself, show that a more transmissible virus emerged. USDA said sequencing from infected poultry at the farm had not identified changes suggesting greater transmissibility to humans.

Does the finding mean people are at high risk?
No increased risk to the general public was identified from this pig detection. USDA and CDC assessed the public risk as low, while recognizing that people exposed to infected animals face higher risk. As of CDC’s November 4, 2024 update, 44 human H5 cases had been confirmed in the United States since April 2024: 19 associated with infected poultry, 24 with sick or infected dairy cows, and one with an undetermined exposure source. No person-to-person spread had been identified in the United States at that time. These figures describe the situation on that date, not a current case count. CDC’s November 8 update reports the figures and risk assessment.
Is pork safe to eat?
USDA said: “There is no concern about the safety of the nation’s pork supply as a result of this finding.” The Oregon farm was noncommercial, and its animals were not intended for the commercial food supply. The detection therefore did not indicate that pork sold to consumers was affected. USDA’s food-safety statement addresses the pork supply directly.

What should farm workers and animal owners do?
People who work with or care for animals should avoid contact with sick or dead animals and with animal feces, bedding, or materials that may be contaminated. Those whose work brings them into contact with potentially infected animals should use appropriate recommended personal protective equipment (PPE). CDC’s worker protection guidance covers precautions and PPE for people with occupational exposure.
CDC also advises avoiding raw milk. Pasteurization kills H5N1 viruses, and CDC says pasteurized milk is safe to drink. See its prevention guidance for additional advice.
