This hardy, active landrace lays about 180 small-to-medium eggs a year, varies widely in appearance, and needs careful sourcing if you want to keep the line pure.
What makes an Icelandic chicken?
The Icelandic chicken, or Íslenska landnámshænan (“Icelandic chicken of the settlers”), is a landrace, not a standardized show breed. Descended from settlement-era Norse farm chickens, it was shaped by selection for self-sufficiency, hardiness, foraging, and useful egg production. The Livestock Conservancy’s breed profile describes a flock in which feather colors and patterns, comb types, and shank colors can vary naturally.
That variation does not mean every unusual-looking bird is a pure Icelandic. The breed profile says true Icelandics should not have feathered legs, muffs, beards, or ear tufts. Ask a breeder about parentage and line records rather than judging purity by color alone.
Are Icelandic chickens good for a homestead?
They can be a strong choice if you have usable outdoor space and can protect birds from predators. Icelandics are lively, curious foragers and can be friendly when handled young. Their active habits and ability to fly mean they may perch in trees or leave an inadequately enclosed area.

The Livestock Conservancy calls them “not suitable for confinement.” A small coop without meaningful outdoor access is therefore a poor fit. Consider these factors before choosing the breed:
- Range and predators: Plan a secure coop and a fenced run or pasture; foraging skill does not make birds predator-proof.
- Climate and winter care: They are considered very hardy, especially in cooler conditions, but combs may be vulnerable to frostbite.
- Egg expectations: They offer useful laying, but eggs are small to medium rather than large.
- Behavior and appearance: Expect active birds and a variable look, not a uniform flock.
- Conservation: Keeping a pure breeding group requires attention to lineage and avoiding crosses.
- Local rules: Check municipal requirements before buying or building.
The Conservancy’s breed-selection guidance likewise recommends matching a breed to climate, land and shelter, foraging conditions, and intended egg or meat use.

How many eggs do Icelandic chickens lay?
The Livestock Conservancy’s current breed profile reports about 180 eggs per year. Eggs range from white to cream or light brown and are small to medium, averaging just below 1.75 ounces according to the profile. Hens may retain broodiness, but not every hen will set.
The profile also gives mature weights of about 4.5–5.25 pounds for males and 3–3.5 pounds for females. A comparison chart lists the breed at roughly 3–5 pounds overall and identifies eggs and meat as uses; that broad range is a summary, not a substitute for the sex-specific weights. Housing, outdoor access, and winter care
Build for secure range
Start with a secure coop and a fenced outdoor run or pasture. Poultry fencing or netting can define the birds’ range, help limit escapes, and reduce predator exposure. Because Icelandics are capable fliers and adept at evading predators, do not assume that a free-ranging flock will reliably return to a safe area or avoid danger.
Keep winter shelter dry and ventilated
Cold hardiness does not establish a universal safe temperature. Local acclimation, moisture, wind, and each bird’s condition affect winter risk. Keep housing dry and well ventilated while preventing drafts at roost level; pay particular attention to combs, which may be prone to frostbite.

How to keep an Icelandic flock pure
If your aim is to conserve the landrace, do not cross Icelandics with other breeds. The Livestock Conservancy says crossing is discouraged and that crossbred offspring cannot be considered Icelandic chickens. Keep breeding records by line, quarantine incoming birds, and seek lineage information from a conservation-minded breeder.
The Conservancy’s profile says pure birds, hatching eggs, chicks, and started birds may be available through dedicated conservation networks. Sugar Feather Farm’s Icelandic chicken listing demonstrates that at least one named breeder offers Icelandic chicks; availability can change, so confirm current stock, lineage, and shipping directly before ordering.

How rare are Icelandic chickens?
The Livestock Conservancy lists the Icelandic as Threatened and estimates about 5,000 pure landrace birds internationally. It says commercial imports and crossing in Iceland threatened the pure population. A separate NordGen population table from 2018 reported approximately 3,000–3,500 birds, including about 300 breeding males and 3,200 breeding females, with endangered status as updated by Iceland’s national coordinator. These are estimates from different sources and dates, not directly interchangeable current counts.
The Conservancy also summarizes a British study from 2004 that reported 78% of Icelandic DNA as unique. That is a historical study result, not a present-day population estimate.
Do you need a permit to keep hens?
Rules depend on where you live. In Iceland, official guidance says hen keeping is permitted outside organized agricultural areas, but requires an application for a licence from the appropriate municipal Public Health Commission. The application can require adjacent-neighbour consent, landlord or co-owner consent in some circumstances, and a site plan showing the coop and fenced area; licences are issued for four years. See Iceland’s official hen-keeping guidance.
Elsewhere, check municipal zoning, limits on livestock, nuisance rules, and veterinary or import requirements before ordering birds. Do not assume that a rule for Iceland applies in another country or municipality.
