Nearly 80 million U.S. domestic birds were counted as lost to bird flu during the outbreak that began in February 2022—but the figure combines birds that died from the disease with birds killed to stop it spreading. It is not a count of wild birds, nor does it mean that all 80 million died naturally.
What the nearly 80 million figure counts
USDA data reported by Agriculture.com in 2024 put the U.S. total at 79.7 million domestic birds from the first confirmed outbreak on February 8, 2022, through the late-December 2023 reporting period. The figure combines birds that died from highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) and birds culled as part of eradication efforts. Most were egg-laying hens and turkeys raised for food.
The report also said HPAI had been confirmed in 1,059 flocks across 47 states. Those are flock detections, not a count of individual farms or wild-bird cases.
Why flocks were culled
When HPAI is found in a poultry flock, authorities work to contain the virus by identifying affected premises, depopulating infected flocks, disposing of carcasses, cleaning and disinfecting premises, and conducting surveillance nearby. Removing birds that may be infected helps limit transmission; it is why a disease-loss figure can include many birds that were killed rather than sick or dead when counted.

The risk can escalate quickly. A February 14, 2024 congressional release quoted Representative Julia Brownley saying, “This highly pathogenic virus can kill up to an entire poultry flock in as quickly as 48 hours.”
Why bird flu kept returning
The USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed HPAI in a U.S. commercial flock on February 8, 2022. APHIS says detections tend to rise in fall and spring, when wild birds migrate and can spread the virus into new areas. It cautions that case numbers can fluctuate with changing virus levels and bird movements.

For poultry owners, preventing contact with wild birds and avoiding transfer of contamination between premises are central precautions. APHIS recommends strong biosecurity, including changing footwear and keeping wildlife away from domestic birds. Disposable poultry boot covers can be one practical way to avoid carrying contamination on footwear, but they are only one element of a broader biosecurity routine.
What the losses mean for the poultry sector
The loss was severe, but it did not amount to the entire U.S. poultry sector. APHIS lists more than 378.5 million U.S. egg-laying chickens. It also reports that the country processed more than 9.4 billion broiler chickens and 218 million turkeys in 2023. These figures have different scopes and time frames from the outbreak total, so they provide context rather than a direct like-for-like comparison.

Agriculture.com compared the 2022–2023 outbreak with the 2014–2015 U.S. HPAI outbreak, which it described as having killed about 50 million birds in commercial flocks. The newer total is larger, though it combines disease deaths and eradication culls.
Egg prices and the outbreak
The bird losses had market consequences, but egg prices also reflect factors beyond avian flu. Agriculture.com reported that egg prices in 2022 averaged 32% above the 2021 average, the largest increase among food categories tracked by USDA during that high-inflation year. The report said USDA economists expected egg prices to fall 12% in 2024 as flocks were rebuilt. Those are price changes, not measures of outbreak losses.

Biosecurity steps for backyard chicken owners
APHIS advises poultry owners to reduce exposure to wild birds and prevent germs from traveling between locations. Its Defend the Flock resources include biosecurity guidance for commercial and backyard flocks.
- Keep domestic birds away from wild birds and wildlife, including by protecting feed and water from access or contamination.
- Use dedicated footwear and clothing around birds; change footwear before entering a coop or moving between poultry areas.
- Clean and disinfect equipment and footwear, and avoid carrying potentially contaminated items between premises.
- Watch for signs of illness and contact a veterinarian or animal-health authority if you suspect HPAI.
APHIS also offers voluntary biosecurity assessments, audits, cost sharing for certain high-risk improvements, and free educational resources. These measures reduce opportunities for introduction and spread; they do not guarantee that a flock will avoid infection.
