Ohio’s Fisher Is Back After a 200-Year Absence—but It Was Never Globally Extinct

Fishers were locally extirpated in Ohio by the 1800s. Verified sightings since 2013—including a pregnant female found in 2023—show the elusive predator is returning from neighboring populations.

The predator returning to Ohio is the fisher (Pekania pennanti), a reclusive member of the weasel family. It disappeared from the state in the 1800s, so “extinct” in the headline means locally extirpated—not extinct worldwide. Modern sightings show fishers moving naturally into Ohio from neighboring populations, but the available records do not establish how many live in the state.

What happened in Ohio?

In February 2023, retired veterinarian Paul Mechling found a fisher killed by a vehicle in his Ashtabula County driveway and reported it to the Ohio Division of Wildlife. The female was pregnant, but she died before giving birth. Ohio wildlife biologist Katie Dennison told News 5 Cleveland that the animal’s presence and pregnancy were positive signs of the species’ potential future in Ohio, although the female and her unborn kits did not survive.

Mechling told News 5 Cleveland, “I said, wow, this is a fisher right here in my driveway.” The roadkill was a particularly striking record of a hard-to-see animal, but it was part of a wider pattern of verified detections.

Is the fisher really extinct in Ohio?

No. The fisher is not globally extinct; it had disappeared from Ohio and is now being detected in the state again. Cleveland Magazine reports that the previous two known Ohio records dated to 1838 and that the species was likely extirpated here by the mid-1800s. Unregulated harvest and extensive forest loss after European colonization contributed to that local disappearance. Cleveland Magazine’s account

Ohio’s first confirmed modern-day sighting came in 2013. By February 2024, Ohio Division of Wildlife data summarized by Cleveland Magazine recorded 40 confirmed observations across nine Northeast Ohio counties. Two-thirds of those observations occurred in the preceding three years. These are observations, not a population estimate: they do not tell us how many individual fishers live in Ohio.

How did fishers return?

The evidence points to natural recolonization from populations established to Ohio’s east, rather than a release program in Ohio. Reintroduction programs in Pennsylvania and New York helped rebuild neighboring populations, and fishers have since moved westward. Outdoor News, summarizing Ohio DNR information, describes the Ohio presence as natural colonization from Pennsylvania. Outdoor News’ report on Ohio sightings

What does a fisher look like, and how does it behave?

Fishers are solitary, forest-dwelling carnivores in the mustelid family, which also includes weasels, mink and otters. Dennison described them to News 5 Cleveland as roughly two to four feet long, with about half their length in the tail, and approximately the size of a house cat by weight. They hunt small mammals, including mice and squirrels. Their long bodies and bushy tails can make them easy to confuse with other mammals at a distance; a quick glimpse or unclear camera image may not be enough for reliable identification.

Fishers are elusive and generally avoid people. Mechling told News 5 Cleveland that he was surprised to see one because they are “a very reclusive animal.” Their return is not a reason to approach or handle one. Give a fisher room, and leave confirmation of uncertain sightings to wildlife professionals.

Are fishers dangerous to pets or chickens?

Fishers generally avoid people, but unsecured chickens, cats, small dogs and some livestock can be at risk. Dennison’s practical advice is to close livestock in at night, when animals left outside may be more vulnerable. Keep small pets supervised and secure poultry in a well-closed coop rather than relying on a fisher’s usual wariness of people.

Where have fishers been seen in Ohio?

The confirmed records reported by February 2024 were in nine Northeast Ohio counties. Ashtabula County is specifically documented by the 2023 roadkill report. The available figures do not identify every observation location, so they should not be treated as a complete map of the animal’s range or proof that fishers are established throughout Ohio.

How can wildlife sightings be checked responsibly?

Trail cameras and field reports have helped Ohio wildlife officials document fisher presence. A camera can record an animal without requiring anyone to approach it, but an image is only useful if it is clear enough to review and the location and date are recorded.
