The soft-looking bulge on a beluga’s forehead is its melon: a flexible mass of fat and connective tissue that helps focus and shape the whale’s echolocation clicks. Belugas can also visibly change the melon’s shape. Those movements happen especially often around other belugas, though scientists have not yet decoded what each shape means.
What is the bump on a beluga’s forehead?
It is the melon, a specialized structure made of fat and connective tissue—not a hollow space, a separate brain, or exposed brain tissue. Its position and shape help guide sounds made inside the whale’s head out into the water.
How does the melon help a beluga echolocate?
Toothed whales produce clicks by moving air through vibrating structures called phonic lips in the nasal passage. The sounds pass through the melon, which focuses and modulates them into a beam. The clicks travel through the water and reflect off objects; a beluga can use the returning echoes to detect what is around it.
The return path is different from the outgoing path. Echoes are received through fatty tissues in the lower jaw and transferred toward the inner ear. Smithsonian Ocean explains this basic sonar process in its overview of how whales and dolphins use sound.

NOAA Fisheries’ March 4, 2009 summary of research by Lammers and Castellote describes two signal generators contributing pulses that combine as they pass through the melon: “We show that the pulses of the two generators are combined as they are transmitted through the melon to produce a single echolocation click emitted from the front of the animal.” This offers a possible way to control the click’s energy and frequency distribution, as well as steer its beam. It does not mean every click is consciously aimed with precise, deliberate movements.
Why is the melon soft and flexible?
The melon is not bone: its fat and connective-tissue structure can change shape. Its acoustic effects depend on more than softness alone. Internal tissue density, the melon’s size and shape, and how it sits among neighboring forehead structures all relate to its ability to focus sound. In that sense, it works like an adjustable acoustic lens, shaping outgoing sound rather than simply acting as a solid barrier.

Can belugas move their foreheads?
Yes. Researchers have documented five visible melon shapes: push, flat, lift, shake and press. A 2024 account in Smithsonian Magazine reported 2,570 shape observations in four belugas at Mystic Aquarium and 72 more at MarineLand Canada.
The observations were closely associated with social settings: 93.6 percent of recorded shapes occurred when another beluga was within line of sight, and the researchers reported that shapes occurred 34 times more frequently during social interactions than outside them. These figures describe observations reported in the 2024 account, not a universal rate for all belugas or settings.

Do belugas use the melon to communicate?
The patterns suggest that melon movements may carry social information, but they do not establish a vocabulary with a proven translation for each shape. The 2024 account said shaking and pressing appeared linked with courtship and sexual behavior, while flattening and lifting had no clear behavioral translation. Researchers have not settled how shape changes relate to the melon’s acoustic role. As cetacean researcher Ellen Coombs put it, “At present, we have no idea if there is a trade-off between these functions.”
The strongest conclusion is that the melon’s role in focusing echolocation sounds is well established, while its possible role in communication remains under study. Belugas’ expressive-looking foreheads are real, but a particular movement should not be treated as a confirmed message without further evidence.
