How Scientists Remote-Control Cockroaches With Nervous-System Stimulators

Cockroach “remote control” means limited electrical cues, not control of an insect’s entire behavior. Here’s how BCI, solar-rechargeable and camera-equipped research prototypes differ.

Yes—but “remote-controlled” means researchers can send limited electrical commands, such as prompting a turn or guiding locomotion. It does not mean they can control a cockroach’s whole behavior. Several research prototypes have combined nerve stimulation with wireless electronics; one also carried a camera, and another used an ultrathin solar cell to recharge its battery.

What does “wiring a chip to a cockroach” actually mean?

It is a shorthand for a biohybrid robot: a living cockroach fitted with electronics that stimulate selected neural pathways and, in some designs, carry sensors or communication hardware. The systems described here do not put a general-purpose control chip in the insect’s brain. Instead, electrodes or stimulators target particular nerves or locomotion pathways, while a body-mounted module receives commands.

The distinction matters. Electrical stimulation can cue a limited movement; it is not a channel for choosing any action the insect might naturally perform. The cockroach remains a living animal with its own sensory inputs and movement, not a mechanical robot whose every motion is dictated remotely.

How do the research systems compare?

System How the operator sends commands Stimulation and movement Payload and power Feedback and demonstrated use
Human brain-computer interface, 2016 A person’s steady-state visual evoked-potential EEG was decoded into motion-intention commands; Bluetooth relayed commands to a portable stimulator. Pulse trains stimulated the cockroach’s antenna nerve to prompt turns. Portable microstimulator; a camera payload or solar charging is not stated in the study summary. Reported average success rates above 85% for single human-BCI and cyborg reactions. The same report gave 20% success for walking along preset tracks, so those figures do not establish general-purpose or track-following reliability.
RIKEN solar-rechargeable platform, 2022 Wireless signals controlled locomotion. A wireless module targeted leg-control pathways. A 3D-printed elastic backpack on the thorax held the control module and lithium-polymer battery. An ultrathin organic solar cell was mounted on the abdomen. Environmental or dangerous-area inspection was proposed as a possible application; the system was a research prototype, not a field-ready product.
CameraRoach An operator used a joystick to guide movement; Wi-Fi carried video to the operator. Neural stimulation guided the cockroach. The specific stimulation target is not stated in the available description. A printed-circuit-board backpack carried a high-resolution wireless camera. The description does not state a solar-recharge system. Live images gave the operator a first-person view. The project framed the camera-equipped system as a possible search-and-rescue tool.

How does a cockroach turn left or right?

In the 2016 brain-computer-interface demonstration, the human operator’s EEG was used to infer a motion intention. A Bluetooth command then triggered a portable microstimulator, which delivered an electrical pulse train to the cockroach’s antenna nerve. The reported result was commanded turning—not direct access to the insect’s full behavior.

The other systems used wireless control to guide locomotion through stimulation of cockroach pathways. Their control hardware and payloads differed, but the central idea was similar: send a limited command to an electrical stimulator, rather than remotely operating the insect like a vehicle with motors. The evidence describes directional control and guided movement, not a universal “move anywhere” capability.

What did the solar-powered cockroach carry?

RIKEN’s 2022 platform was built around a Madagascar hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa). Its thorax carried a 3D-printed elastic backpack containing a wireless locomotion-control module and a lithium-polymer battery. On the abdomen, researchers attached an organic solar-cell module only 4 micrometres thick. The authors reported an output of 17.2 mW for that solar module.

Alpine Roach Gel Rotation 1 & 2 Box Kit: Long-Term Effectiveness Against Resistant Cockroach Strains with USA Supply Chemical Resistant Gloves and USA Supply Pest Identification Card
  • Rotation Strategy: The system uses two different food attractants (matrices) while maintaining the same active ingredient. Rotating between the two formulations (typically every six months) ensures that cockroaches do not become habituated to or avoid one specific bait type.
  • Active Ingredient: Both Rotation 1 and 2 contain 0.5% Dinotefuran. This non-repellent insecticide is granted "Reduced Risk" status by the EPA for use in public health and food-handling areas.
  • Target Pests: Effectively controls major cockroach species, including German, American, and Oriental cockroaches.
  • Secondary Kill: The formula provides secondary mortality, where nymphs and other roaches are killed after feeding on the infected carcasses or droppings of roaches that initially consumed the bait

The solar cell recharged the battery under simulated sunlight; it did not replace the battery or make the system indefinitely self-powered. RIKEN reported that the backpack remained stably mounted for more than one month. That is a reported mounting duration, not a claim that the insect operated continuously for that period or that the same result applies to other setups.

The design separated relatively rigid electronics on the thorax from an ultrasoft solar module on the abdomen, where the body deforms during movement. RIKEN Senior Research Scientist Kenjiro Fukuda described the reasoning: “Considering the deformation of the thorax and abdomen during basic locomotion, a hybrid electronic system of rigid and flexible elements in the thorax and ultrasoft devices in the abdomen appears to be an effective design for cyborg cockroaches.”

Could a camera-equipped cockroach help in search and rescue?

CameraRoach paired a wireless camera with joystick-guided neural stimulation. Wi-Fi sent live images to the operator, creating a first-person view from the insect’s position. That is a different capability from the RIKEN solar-rechargeable platform, whose described contribution was powering and controlling locomotion rather than providing a camera feed.

A small animal carrying a camera could, in principle, reach spaces that are awkward for some conventional equipment. But the project’s search-and-rescue framing is an application concept, not evidence that these systems have been deployed in emergencies or shown to outperform established inspection tools. RIKEN likewise described environmental and dangerous-area inspection as proposed uses.

Can you buy a RoboRoach or build one?

Historical RoboRoach educational-kit documentation exists, but it does not establish that a kit is currently sold or that it reproduces the newer research systems. The research prototypes described here involve custom stimulation and wireless electronics; the solar-rechargeable platform additionally combines a battery, a purpose-designed backpack and a flexible organic solar cell. Ordinary camera or robotics components alone would not recreate the published experiments.

For an animal owner, these demonstrations are not a pet-care method or a do-it-yourself handling project. They involve deliberately stimulating nerves and attaching hardware to a living insect. The cited work establishes research demonstrations, not a consumer product or a general procedure for safely modifying animals.
