How to Tell If Your Cat Needs Emergency Veterinary Care

Breathing trouble, collapse, inability to urinate, serious injury, and suspected poisoning call for immediate veterinary guidance. Here’s how to act while arranging care.

If your cat is struggling to breathe, has collapsed, cannot urinate, suffered a serious injury, or may have been poisoned, seek emergency veterinary care now. Call your veterinarian or the nearest emergency hospital while you prepare to go. This is triage guidance—not a way to diagnose your cat at home.

Emergency signs that mean go now

Do not wait for symptoms to worsen if you see any of these signs. Call a veterinarian or emergency hospital for instructions and arrange urgent care.

  • Difficulty breathing: open-mouth breathing, panting, noisy or rapid breathing, visible effort, or any inability to breathe comfortably.
  • Collapse or unresponsiveness: sudden collapse, fainting, inability to stand, or loss of consciousness.
  • Possible urinary blockage: repeated litter-box visits or straining that produce no urine or only a few drops. Suspected urethral obstruction is a true medical emergency and can worsen rapidly.
  • Serious trauma: being struck by a vehicle, a suspected broken bone, a penetrating wound to the chest or abdomen, significant head injury, or eye injury.
  • Possible poisoning: exposure to medication, lilies or other toxic plants, antifreeze, pesticides, or household chemicals. Contact a professional even if your cat seems well; symptoms vary and may not appear immediately.
  • Seizure or severe allergic signs: facial swelling, hives, vomiting or diarrhea with weakness, or collapse.
  • Repeated or continuous vomiting or diarrhea: particularly if there is blood, marked weakness, collapse, or a possible toxin exposure.

Breathing problems deserve especially quick action. Daniel Fletcher, DVM, an assistant professor of emergency and critical care at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, advises: “Any time there’s a question about an animal’s ability to breathe comfortably, get it to a veterinarian right away.” Cornell Feline Health Center: Dyspnea (Difficulty Breathing).

What to do while arranging veterinary care

  1. Call the regular veterinarian or nearest emergency hospital. Describe what you see, when it began, and any possible injury or exposure. Follow their directions while you prepare to leave.
  2. Keep your cat quiet and handle gently. If trauma, a fracture, or neurological signs are possible, minimize movement. Use a secure carrier or supportive box for transport when appropriate; getting a carrier must not delay care.
  3. For suspected poisoning, bring useful information. Take the product container, label, or a sample if safe to do so. Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian or poison-control professional specifically directs you.
  4. Treat first aid only as a bridge to care. It does not replace veterinary assessment. The AVMA’s 2023 pet first-aid brochure likewise cautions that first aid is not a substitute for veterinary care.

When you’re unsure

Emergency signs are not limited to a checklist. If your cat has a sudden, severe change or you are unsure how urgent it is, call a veterinarian or emergency hospital for case-specific advice. Do not use the absence of one listed sign to conclude that your cat is safe. Veterinary sources including VCA’s cat first-aid guidance and Cornell’s urinary obstruction information cover additional emergency situations and response guidance.
