Call your current veterinarian and ask for a prompt second opinion or referral. Have the clinic call the receiving veterinarian directly, then call that clinic yourself to confirm the soonest suitable appointment and what records it needs. If your pet may be in immediate danger, contact an emergency animal hospital now rather than waiting for a routine appointment.
How to arrange a second opinion quickly
- Call your current veterinarian. Say: “I’d like a second opinion as soon as possible about [main concern]. Can you refer us to the appropriate specialist or call a receiving clinic today?” Explain what decision you need help with, such as an uncertain diagnosis, a treatment that is not working, or whether surgery is appropriate. Ask who will advise you while your pet waits.
- Request a direct handoff. Ask whether your veterinarian can recommend an appropriate specialist or practice and speak with the receiving veterinarian by phone. For an urgent case, a clinician-to-clinician call can coordinate care faster than relying only on email. Clarify whether the visit is for a consultation, a particular test, or transfer of ongoing care.
- Call the receiving clinic. Ask whether it can see your pet, the earliest suitable appointment, whether it requires a referral, and how the records should be sent. Confirm who will contact you and how the appointment will be arranged; referral guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) stresses making that process clear (AAHA 2025 referral guidelines).
- Arrange the records transfer. Ask your current clinic to send the visit notes, test results and images, medication list, prior treatments and response, and discharge instructions. Ask the receiving clinic which items it needs before the visit and whether you should bring copies. A clear handoff helps the next veterinarian understand what has already been assessed and done (AAHA referral guidance; AAHA guidance on coordination during referral).
- Get instructions for the wait. Ask what to do if symptoms change and whom to call. Continue the current veterinarian’s instructions unless a veterinarian advises otherwise; do not stop or change treatment on your own based on online advice.
When to skip the routine appointment
If you think your pet could be in immediate danger, call a veterinarian or emergency animal hospital now. Do not wait for a routine second-opinion slot; ask the receiving clinic whether your pet should go to emergency care instead. If your current veterinarian is unavailable, contact an emergency animal hospital.
Suspected poisoning in the United States
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists two animal poison-control services as available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year; both charge fees. The FDA listing gives ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661. Check the FDA’s current poison-control guidance for contact details and instructions. These services do not replace emergency veterinary care when your pet may be in immediate danger.
What to ask the receiving veterinarian
- Is this the right specialty for the problem, and what relevant credentials or experience does the veterinarian have?
- What is the earliest suitable appointment? Based on what I describe, should we go to emergency care instead?
- Can my current veterinarian send the records directly, and which results or images do you need?
- What is the initial consultation fee? Could additional tests or procedures be recommended, and would they happen at this visit?
- Should I continue the current treatment until the appointment? Whom should I contact if symptoms change?
- Is this consultation only, or will your clinic take over care for this problem? How will you coordinate with the current clinic?
Do not assume a procedure will happen at the first appointment. Ask about likely next steps and costs, while allowing the veterinarian to determine what is appropriate after assessing the case.

Second opinion, referral, or contacting a specialist yourself?
A second opinion is an independent assessment by another veterinarian. A referral commonly involves a handoff for a defined problem, but the exact arrangement varies. Before the visit, clarify which veterinarian is responsible for advice and follow-up, and whether the receiving clinic will take over care. The Australian Veterinary Association describes referral or second opinion as transferring responsibility for diagnosis and treatment to the receiving veterinarian; that description is not a statement of U.S. law (Australian Veterinary Association referral and second-opinion policy).
You may be able to contact a specialist directly, but clinic processes and local rules vary. Ask the receiving hospital whether it accepts direct appointments or requires a referral. AAHA’s referral guidelines say veterinarians should “Acknowledge, respect and honor a client’s request for a second opinion in a timely manner” (AAHA referral guidelines). Reasons to consider referral include an inconclusive diagnosis, a condition that is unresolved or worsening, a need for specialist expertise or equipment, round-the-clock supervision, or dissatisfaction with progress.

Can a phone or video appointment provide a second opinion?
Remote veterinary care can help with triage or specialist input, but it is not always a substitute for an examination. AAHA distinguishes general teleadvice, teletriage to assess whether care is needed, telemedicine for evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment where permitted, and teleconsulting in which a primary veterinarian consults a specialist (AAHA 2025 telehealth guidelines).
Whether a veterinarian may diagnose, treat, or prescribe remotely depends on applicable state rules, the veterinarian-client-patient relationship, and the case. A remote veterinarian may still recommend an in-person examination. Ask the clinic what it can assess remotely and whether that option is appropriate for your pet (AAHA explanation of the veterinarian-client-patient relationship).

Choosing between available clinics
If more than one clinic may be able to see your pet, weigh the clinical fit and speed of care together. The closest or least expensive option is not automatically the right choice.
