Sometimes a nursing dog can help care for orphaned kittens, but that does not mean her milk is a suitable complete diet for them. A nursing cat is the preferred foster for kittens when one is available and accepts them. If not, contact a veterinarian promptly about kitten-specific milk replacer and a safe feeding plan. For other baby animals, feeding needs vary by species, so get advice for that animal rather than assuming dog milk or a puppy formula will work.
Can a dog nurse kittens?
A dog may be considered as a foster caregiver for kittens, but caregiving and nutrition are separate questions. A dog may offer warmth or maternal care; that alone does not establish that her milk meets a kitten’s nutritional needs. The reviewed veterinary guidance allows that a nursing dog or cat may foster orphaned young, while also explaining that milk composition differs between species. Why dog milk should not be assumed to nourish a kitten
Puppies and kittens have different nutritional needs, and commercial milk replacers are formulated for particular species. Do not treat dog milk or puppy milk replacer as a complete kitten diet unless a veterinarian directs a specific plan. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns that a replacer given to the wrong species can cause serious illness or death. Its milk-replacer safety guidance says: “A milk replacer that is not mixed correctly, fed to the animal inappropriately, given to the incorrect species, or is defective in some way may cause the animal to become seriously ill or die.”
What to do for an orphaned kitten
Look for a suitable nursing cat first
A nursing queen—the term for a mother cat—is the preferred species-matched foster option if one is available and accepts the kitten. Make sure the kitten can access nursing and that the foster is producing milk and caring for it. Involve a veterinarian or rescue organization; the available guidance does not establish a universal protocol for introducing kittens to a foster mother.

If there is no suitable nursing cat, ask a veterinarian about replacer
Use a commercial product labeled specifically for kittens and follow its preparation directions. The veterinarian can help determine whether hand-feeding is appropriate and set a plan based on the kitten’s condition, age, ability to nurse, and colostrum history. Do not add ingredients or combine products unless the label or manufacturer directs you to.
Milk replacer does not provide the range of antibodies found in maternal colostrum. If a kitten may have missed colostrum, tell the veterinarian; replacer is not a substitute for that early immune protection.

Use feeding equipment safely
If bottle-feeding is advised, use a pet nursing bottle with a nipple that releases no more than one drop at a time. VCA warns that a nipple with excessive flow can cause aspiration, pneumonia, or death. Follow veterinary instruction and the equipment directions; do not attempt tube feeding without veterinary training. See VCA’s instructions for feeding orphaned kittens.
Mix, store, and clean replacer carefully
- Check the label to confirm the product is for kittens, and follow its mixing and storage directions exactly.
- Prepare reconstituted replacer for one-time use and discard what remains after feeding, as the FDA advises. Check the current product instructions for any additional storage details.
- Clean and disinfect bottles and other feeding materials between feedings.
For puppies, VCA likewise recommends canine-specific replacer when a foster dog cannot be found and says cow’s and goat’s milk are inadequate for puppies. That is another reason not to generalize one species’ milk or formula to another; see VCA’s orphaned-puppy feeding guidance.

When to get veterinary help urgently
Do not treat a weak, cold, ill, or poorly thriving neonate as a routine feeding problem. Contact a veterinarian promptly, because the animal’s medical condition and ability to nurse can change what is safe. The FDA advises stopping a replacer and calling a veterinarian if the animal appears sick or fails to thrive.

There is no safe universal answer for other species. Milk composition and feeding needs differ, and a product meant for the wrong species can cause serious harm. Contact a veterinarian or qualified wildlife rehabilitator for guidance specific to the animal; do not assume dog milk, kitten formula, or puppy formula is suitable.
