What to Do If Your Cat Tests Positive for Giardia

A positive Giardia test calls for veterinary guidance, careful litter and household cleanup, and a clear follow-up plan—not home medication.

Call your veterinarian to interpret the positive result and decide whether your cat needs treatment. Follow the prescribed plan, clean up feces promptly, and ask whether other pets or a follow-up test need attention. Do not give human medicine, leftover prescriptions, or over-the-counter products: the CDC says no approved over-the-counter medications are available.

What to do first after a positive test

  1. Contact the veterinarian who ordered the test, or your regular veterinarian. Ask what the result means in light of your cat’s symptoms and which test was used. Some cats carry Giardia without obvious signs, while diarrhea can have causes other than Giardia.
  2. Discuss whether treatment is appropriate. Medication and the decision to treat belong to a veterinarian. Ask what was prescribed, how to give it, what side effects or worsening signs should prompt a call, and whether follow-up testing is planned. Do not start, stop, or repeat medication without veterinary direction.
  3. Describe your cat’s health and household. Mention other pets, any ongoing diarrhea, and whether your cat is a kitten, older, or has an illness that affects immunity. These details can change how closely the veterinarian wants to monitor the situation.

Seek prompt veterinary advice if diarrhea is severe, your cat seems weak, is not drinking, or may be dehydrated. Severe diarrhea or dehydration may require supportive care as well as a plan for Giardia.

What a positive Giardia test does—and does not—tell you

Giardia spreads when an animal ingests cysts shed in feces. A positive test is a reason to discuss the result with your veterinarian, not a complete explanation for every symptom or a reason to assume every household member is infected. Diagnosis can involve microscopic identification of cysts or other fecal tests; because shedding can be intermittent, interpretation may depend on the test and stool samples collected.

Veterinary guidance includes options such as fenbendazole or metronidazole in some feline cases, but these are clinician-directed protocols, not interchangeable choices for owners. Treatment decisions can depend on signs and health status, and an asymptomatic cat may not always need medication. Your veterinarian should determine the plan for your cat.

Reduce the chance of reinfection at home

The practical goal is to limit fecal contamination while your cat is being treated and for a few days after the final dose, when possible. Follow your veterinarian’s instructions alongside the CDC’s pet-cleaning guidance.

  • Remove feces from the litter box promptly and change the litter daily.
  • Regularly clean and disinfect litter boxes, bowls, toys, bedding, crates, and floors. If your cat is receiving medication, the CDC recommends cleaning and disinfecting daily if possible until a few days after the last dose.
  • Wash your hands after handling your cat, feces, food, litter, or cleaning supplies.
  • Ask your veterinarian whether and when to bathe your cat to remove fecal material from the fur. A bath may be stressful or unsuitable for a sick or distressed cat, so get advice on timing and technique.

For compatible surfaces, the Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) says steam-cleaning or commercially available disinfectants can be used to sanitize, and surfaces should be allowed to dry thoroughly. A household steam cleaner is an optional tool only for materials that tolerate steam; it does not treat the cat and is not suitable for every surface. Soil, grass, and standing water are difficult to decontaminate. Do not apply bleach or quaternary ammonium compounds outdoors: the CDC says these do not kill Giardia in soil or grass.

Tell the vet about every other pet

Let the veterinarian know about all dogs and cats in the household, including those without diarrhea. Apparently healthy animals can still be infected and spread Giardia. The veterinarian may recommend testing or treatment for other pets; do not medicate them based only on the first cat’s result.

Can I catch Giardia from my cat?

The CDC says people are unlikely to get Giardia from a dog or cat. CAPC notes that human infection from a dog or cat source has not been conclusively demonstrated in North America. That is not a reason to skip ordinary hygiene: wash hands after contact with feces or pet supplies and keep contaminated items clean. People with increased susceptibility should ask a healthcare professional for individualized advice and consider limiting exposure. If you develop gastrointestinal symptoms after exposure, contact a healthcare professional.

If diarrhea continues or a follow-up test is positive

Contact your veterinarian rather than repeating treatment at home. Persistent diarrhea may need evaluation, and a positive result after therapy must be interpreted in the context of the test. CAPC recommends fecal flotation 24–48 hours after treatment completion for follow-up; ELISA and PCR tests can remain positive for variable periods after treatment, so a positive result from either test alone does not establish treatment failure or reinfection. Attend the follow-up appointments your veterinarian recommends.
