The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the Giardia types that usually make people sick are generally different from those that usually infect cats and dogs. Infection happens when someone swallows Giardia from fecal contamination—not simply from being near or petting a cat.
How Giardia spreads from cats to people
Giardia is a parasite passed in feces. A person can become infected by swallowing it after contaminated feces get onto hands, objects, surfaces, food or water. The risk is therefore tied to fecal contamination and hand-to-mouth contact, not ordinary proximity to a cat. CDC says people are unlikely to get Giardia from dogs or cats because the types that usually cause illness in people are generally different from those that usually infect these pets. That makes the risk low, not zero; CDC does not give a numerical probability for cat-to-human transmission.
Giardia is common overall: CDC says more than 1 million people in the United States get sick from it each year. That figure is the annual U.S. burden from all sources, not the number of people infected by cats. CDC’s Giardia overview was published in 2024.
Symptoms of Giardia in people
Some people infected with Giardia have no symptoms. When illness occurs, symptoms can include:

- Diarrhea
- Gas and stomach cramps or pain
- Nausea or an upset stomach

CDC says symptoms usually begin one to two weeks after infection and typically last two to six weeks, though some people report longer-term symptoms. The timing is not immediate in every case. If you have compatible symptoms or suspect Giardia, contact a healthcare provider; CDC notes that diagnosis can involve stool testing and a clinician may prescribe medication. What Giardia may look like in a cat
Diarrhea in a cat can have many causes, so it does not by itself establish Giardia. If your cat has persistent diarrhea, contact a veterinarian, who can advise whether stool testing is appropriate. A cat may not shed Giardia in every bowel movement, so a veterinarian may request multiple stool samples. A pet can also look better before it has stopped passing Giardia.

Wash hands and handle litter carefully
- Wash your hands with soap and water after touching pets, feces, pet food or pet supplies.
- Avoid touching animal poop directly; change litter boxes daily.
- When cleaning up pet waste or gardening, gloves can help avoid contact with feces or contaminated soil, but they do not replace handwashing.
Clean contaminated areas
Remove visible feces, clean the affected area, then disinfect it according to the product label. For a cat being treated, CDC advises cleaning and disinfecting the pet’s items daily if possible while medication is being given and for a few days after the final dose. This includes toys, bowls, bedding, crates, litter boxes and floors. Bathing the pet can help remove feces from its fur.
