If local veterinary clinics are full, contact practices directly to ask whether they can register your dog, keep a cancellation or waitlist, or expect to accept new patients later. Widen your search, prepare your dog’s details, and find out how routine appointments and emergency care work before you need them. This guidance is for the UK; availability and arrangements vary by practice.

1. Contact practices and ask about current availability

Call or use each practice’s online contact form to ask whether it is accepting new dogs. If it is not, ask whether it has a cancellation list or waitlist, when it expects to review its intake, and whether you should check back at a particular time. A practice may let you register by phone, online, or in person, but it is not guaranteed to accept new patients or offer a waitlist. The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) registration guidance encourages owners to register as soon as possible rather than wait until urgent treatment is needed.

Keep a short record of the practices you contact, who you spoke to, and any suggested follow-up date. That makes it easier to revisit options without assuming that a past answer still reflects current capacity.

2. Widen your search

Use the RCVS Find a Vet information to locate UK practices, then contact them directly. A directory entry does not confirm that a practice has room for new patients, so verify intake and services with the practice itself.

3. Prepare the information a practice may request

Having details ready can make an enquiry or registration easier. Practices typically ask for some of the following, though not every practice requires every item:

If you have them, keep vaccination or previous veterinary records accessible too, and ask the practice how it would like records transferred. The RCVS registration guidance identifies owner contact details and basic pet information as details practices typically request.

4. Compare practical arrangements before choosing

When a practice can take your dog, compare the details that will affect access to care—not just distance. Ask about:

Busy practices may require routine appointments to be booked in advance. The RCVS explains that services and arrangements differ between practices in its guide to choosing a veterinary practice.

5. Get the emergency plan before you need it

Ask the practice who handles out-of-hours emergencies and save the provider’s name, address, and phone number. RCVS guidance says emergency first aid and pain relief should be available around the clock, either through the practice or another provider. Confirm the exact arrangements with your practice and keep them somewhere easy to find.

6. If your dog needs care now

Do not wait for routine registration or a waitlist if your dog is ill or injured. Contact a veterinary service promptly, explain your dog’s condition and that it is not registered with the practice, and ask where to go next. The appropriate provider and its capacity depend on your location; the RCVS advises owners to act promptly when concerned about their animal.
