What to do right now
- Stop further exposure. Move your dog away from the plant. If you can do so safely, save a photo or a sample of the plant or bur for identification.
- Call a veterinary professional promptly. Contact your dog’s veterinarian or an animal poison-control service and explain what happened. The FDA advises prompt contact after a potentially dangerous pet ingestion: FDA: Potentially Dangerous Items for Your Pet. If you are unsure whether a plant is toxic, Cornell also recommends contacting a veterinarian or animal poison-control service: Cornell: Small Animal Toxins.
- Share the key details. Tell them your dog’s weight, the approximate amount eaten or chewed, the time of exposure, any symptoms, and whether you can identify the plant as puncturevine or goathead. Follow their instructions about whether your dog needs to be seen.
- Do not induce vomiting or give medication unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. The cited guidance does not provide a puncturevine-specific home treatment.
If your dog has trouble breathing, is choking, cannot or struggles to swallow, is repeatedly vomiting, or is in marked distress, seek urgent veterinary care. These are cautious warning signs given the plant’s sharp burs, not proof that every exposure causes these problems.
Why puncturevine can hurt a dog
Puncturevine is Tribulus terrestris. Its woody fruit breaks into hard, sharply spined burs, also called nutlets. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency describes the nutlets as wedge-shaped and woody, with several spines; the largest spine measures 5–6 mm on its identification page accessed in 2026. Those spines create a plausible mechanical-injury risk if a dog chews a bur or gets one lodged in the mouth or throat. UC IPM notes that sharp puncturevine burs can injure humans and animals, and livestock guidance describes seeds lodged in the mouth or throat interfering with eating. Are goathead burs poisonous to dogs?
Dog-specific toxicity is not established by the sources cited here: they do not provide a canine toxic dose, threshold, or expected outcome. UC IPM describes saponins in puncturevine leaves as toxic to livestock, especially sheep, when eaten in quantity; the University of Arizona bulletin also discusses livestock effects. Those species-specific observations should not be treated as evidence of the same effects or a safe dose in dogs.
Because there is no established safe amount for dogs in these sources, do not use the absence of symptoms—or a small-looking amount—as a reason to guess that no advice is needed. Ask a veterinarian or poison-control professional what to do for your dog.

What to watch for
Tell the veterinary professional about any signs you notice. Mouth or throat discomfort, difficulty swallowing, repeated vomiting, breathing trouble, choking, or pronounced distress warrant urgent veterinary assessment. These signs are sensible reasons to escalate because the burs are sharp; they are not a confirmed puncturevine-specific syndrome.
