The most reliable identification comes from the plant’s combination of hairy stems, opposite compound leaves, small yellow flowers, and hard, segmented burrs—not from a loose prickly burr alone. Grass sandburs also make painful burrs, while prostrate spurge can be distinguished by its milky sap and lack of puncturevine’s yellow flowers and hard fruit.
What goathead looks like
Goathead and puncturevine are common names for Tribulus terrestris. It is a summer annual in the caltrop family, not a grass. It grows close to the ground, with stems radiating from a central taproot to form a mat; UC IPM notes that the stems do not root along their length. See the UC IPM puncturevine identification and management page.
- Stems and leaves: Stems and foliage are hairy. Leaves grow in opposite pairs and are pinnately compound, with several pairs of small leaflets. UC IPM describes four to eight opposite leaflet pairs.
- Flowers: Small, yellow flowers with five petals appear singly where a leaf stalk meets the stem.
- Fruit: The fruit starts as a cluster of five lobes, then hardens into a woody burr that breaks into sharp segments. Mature burrs are tan to gray and about 5–10 mm (roughly 1/5–2/5 inch) across, according to UC IPM’s identification gallery.
When the plant is not flowering, the opposite compound leaves and broadleaf stems are especially useful clues. Iowa State Extension explains these features in its puncturevine identification resource.
How to distinguish goathead from other prickly weeds
| Plant | Leaves and growth | Flower or seed structure | Useful clue |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goathead / puncturevine | Low, spreading broadleaf; hairy stems and opposite compound leaves with small leaflets. | Small five-petaled yellow flowers; hard, five-part fruit that breaks into sharp burr segments. | Look for the combination of compound leaves, yellow flowers, and hard burrs. |
| Grass sandbur | Grass with narrow blades, not opposite compound leaves. | Prickly structures are associated with grass seed heads and spikelets, not puncturevine’s five-petaled flower and segmented fruit. | Check the plant’s grass form and seed-head structure. Sandbur species vary, so this is a general contrast rather than a complete species key. |
| Prostrate spurge | Low-growing broadleaf. | Does not have puncturevine’s yellow flowers and hard burrs. | Milky sap is a supporting clue for spurge; do not touch or taste an unknown plant to test it. |
Missouri State University’s prostrate spurge identification page highlights the contrast with puncturevine: spurge has milky sap and lacks puncturevine’s yellow flowers and burs. Use several features together rather than relying on one clue.

Why a loose burr is not enough for identification
Goathead burrs are distinctive, but prickly grass sandburs can also catch in shoes, fur, and paws. If you find a burr without the plant, look nearby for its leaves, flowers, or the way the fruit is attached before deciding what it is. Common names can add confusion: Nevada Extension lists “Mexican sandbur” and “Texas sandbur” among names used for puncturevine, even though “sandbur” also refers to prickly grass weeds. The Nevada Extension puncturevine resource is one reason to favor the scientific name and plant traits over a common name.
What goathead means for pets and livestock
The hard spines can injure people and animals, catch in fur or feet, and puncture tires. If a pet comes into contact with burrs, check paws and coat carefully; the evidence here establishes the mechanical injury risk, not a specific treatment protocol. Contact a veterinarian if an animal is hurt or you are unsure how to safely remove a burr.

UC IPM also reports that puncturevine foliage contains saponins that can be toxic to livestock, especially sheep, when eaten in quantity. This is a qualified ingestion hazard; it does not mean ordinary contact with the plant is poisonous.
When goathead appears and how to remove it
In California guidance, puncturevine germinates in spring and summer when warmth and moisture are suitable, may flower within weeks, and can continue flowering through summer. Seeds may remain viable in soil for up to five years, according to UC IPM. Exact timing varies with local climate, so treat these as general life-cycle context rather than a calendar for every region.

- Collect fallen burrs: Check the ground around the plant and remove burrs that have dropped off; leaving them behind can preserve the seed source.
- Recheck the area: Inspect for regrowth and new plants, and remove them before mature burrs form. Follow local extension advice for disposal.
A hand garden hoe is optional if hoeing is more practical than pulling; no particular tool model is required by the cited guidance. UC IPM gives puncturevine a C-rated classification in California only. That designation should not be assumed to apply in other states or countries; check local extension or weed-control authorities for regional rules.

This comparison covers puncturevine, prostrate spurge, and the general distinction between a broadleaf weed and grass sandbur; it is not a complete key to every prickly weed or regional sandbur species. If the plant’s features do not match clearly, a sharp photo showing leaves, stems, flowers, and fruit can help a local extension office identify it. Local advice is also the right source for any regional invasive-weed or disposal requirements.
