If a goathead thorn punctures your bicycle tire, first identify whether the wheel has an inner tube or is tubeless: a tube needs a patch or replacement, while a tubeless tire may seal with its liquid sealant or need a plug. Remove the thorn before refitting or replacing anything, and do not ride on a tire with a cut, bulge, or other visible casing damage. The steps below cover bicycle tires; they do not apply to every kind of tire.

Identify the tire setup before choosing a repair

Check the wheel and tire information or the bike’s setup to determine whether it uses an inner tube or a tubeless system. The repairs are different: a tube puncture is fixed by patching or replacing the tube, while tubeless sealant may close a small hole inside the tire. If you cannot identify the setup, avoid injecting sealant or inserting a plug until you confirm that the product and repair method are compatible.

  • Tube-type tire: The tire contains a separate inner tube. You can patch a small hole in the tube with a compatible patch kit or install a replacement tube.
  • Tubeless tire: The tire seals against the rim and contains liquid sealant. Give the sealant a chance to close a small puncture; a compatible tubeless plug is an option if it does not.

Repair a goathead puncture in a tube-type tire

  1. Get to a safe place and remove the wheel. Deflate the tube, then use tire levers to remove one bead of the tire from the rim. Take out the tube.
  2. Find and remove the thorn. Inspect the tread and casing carefully for the goathead and any additional thorns. Check the inside of the tire around the puncture for damage or another object before putting in a repaired or replacement tube. A thorn left in the casing can puncture the tube again.
  3. Locate the leak. Inflate the tube just enough to help find the hole. At home, immersing it in water can reveal bubbles. On the roadside, listen or feel for escaping air. Mark the hole and check the rest of the tube for another leak.
  4. Apply a compatible patch. Prepare the puncture and use the patch kit as directed. For a glued patch, Zéfal’s repair guide says to let the glue become matt before applying the patch. Follow the directions supplied with your own kit, since products can differ.
  5. Test the repair before reinstalling. Inflate the tube and check that air is no longer escaping. Zéfal recommends a test inflation before putting the tube back in the tire to confirm the puncture is plugged: Zéfal’s bike puncture repair guide.
  6. Refit the tube and tire. Let a little air into the tube so it holds shape, place it in the tire without pinching it between the tire and rim, and seat the tire bead. Inflate to the pressure specified for the tire.

If the tire casing is cut, bulging, or visibly damaged, do not ride on it; a tube patch does not repair structural tire damage.

What to do when a tubeless tire is punctured

Give sealant a chance to close a small hole

If sealant is already inside the tire and the puncture is small, rotate the wheel so the leak is at the bottom, rather than at the top. Schwalbe advises continuing to ride or placing the puncture against the ground so tire flex helps sealant reach the hole. Michelin likewise advises pointing the visible leak downward, allowing the sealant to dry briefly, then reinflating without overinflating.

Use a plug only within its stated limits

If sealant will not close the hole, a plug made for bicycle tubeless tires may work for a limited puncture. Follow the plug maker’s directions and size limits. Zéfal specifies its plugs for punctures from 1 to 5 mm; that is a limit for its product, not a universal standard. Zéfal advises sealant for smaller holes and says larger damage may require tire replacement. Park Tool describes a plug tool for small punctures and cuts that can be used without removing the tire. Follow the instructions for the particular plug and tool you have.

Carry a backup for a failed seal

If sealant or a plug cannot hold air, a spare inner tube can provide a way to get moving again, provided the tire itself is safe to ride. A large cut or a snake bite—damage caused when the tire and tube are pinched against the rim—may be beyond what sealant can seal and can require replacing the tire. Do not continue riding if the casing is visibly damaged.

Can sealant be used in an inner tube?

Tube sealant is a separate product and use case from tubeless sealant. Slime’s bicycle instructions specifically address thorns and goatheads, advise locating and removing the object if possible, and describe injecting sealant through the valve core. Follow the product directions for the tube’s valve type and the required amount. Do not assume a tube has a removable valve core or that a sealant intended for another setup will work with it.

Prevent repeat goathead flats

  • Remove thorns promptly: Inspect the tire after a puncture and clear any remaining goatheads before fitting a patched or new tube.
  • Carry the basics: For a ride, tire levers, a pump, and a spare tube are useful backup; a patch kit can repair a tube puncture when the tire casing is sound. Tubeless riders should carry a compatible plug and consider a spare tube in case sealant fails.
  • Consider protection suited to the bike: Schwalbe notes that liquid sealant can help with punctures and may provide additional protection in very thorny areas. It also says a quality tire with a suitable puncture-protection belt is a lower-maintenance option for many riders. Tire construction varies by use—such as touring, city, mountain, road, or gravel—so choose protection compatible with your bike and tire size rather than assuming one tire suits every bicycle.
