For a small goathead patch, pull young plants from moist soil or cut them at ground level with a hoe or hand weeder before they flower and set seed. Collect the plants and any burs carefully, keep pets away from the infested area, and check for new seedlings through the growing season. A single cleanup may not be enough: puncturevine seeds can remain viable in soil for up to five years, according to UC IPM.

Why goathead weeds are a risk to pets

Goathead, also called puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris), is a low-growing summer annual. Its mature fruit breaks into hard burs with sharp spines. Those burs can injure animal feet and mouths, and may cause harm if swallowed, according to UC IPM. The plant’s low, spreading growth can make it easy to overlook in a yard.

Until the area is cleared and checked, keep pets away from active infestations. The cited guidance does not set a universal waiting period for letting pets back into a treated area, so inspect the ground closely for remaining burs rather than relying on a set number of days.

How to remove a small patch without herbicides

  1. Choose a time when the soil is moist. Young plants are easier to pull from moist soil, according to Colorado State University Extension.
  2. Pull or cut the plant before it flowers. Remove small plants by hand, or use a hoe, hand weeder, or dandelion digger to cut them at the taproot or ground level. University guidance recommends manual removal before flowering and seed production; puncturevine does not regrow from stem pieces. See North Carolina State University Extension, UC IPM, and Colorado State University Extension.
  3. Handle and collect debris carefully. Avoid spreading burs as you work; gather removed plants and any visible burs for disposal. Wear suitable handling protection, but do not assume any particular glove is puncture-proof: the cited sources do not test or certify gloves for that purpose.
  4. Inspect the cleared ground before pets return. Look for burs that may have been missed, especially where pets walk or lie down. There is no source-backed universal re-entry interval.

Choose a control method for the site

Method Best fit What to know
Hand-pulling Small, accessible patches and young plants Moist soil makes young plants easier to pull. Remove them before they set seed. Colorado State University Extension
Hoe or hand weeder Plants that are difficult to pull or patches where digging is more practical Cut at the taproot or ground level before flowering. Take care not to spread burs. North Carolina State University Extension; UC IPM
Light-excluding mulch Suitable garden beds and landscape plantings UC IPM says mulch can control puncturevine when it excludes all light; organic mulch should be at least 3 inches deep. This is not a universal lawn prescription. UC IPM
Dense lawn Sites where maintaining a lawn is appropriate Colorado State University Extension recommends a thick lawn mowed high and fertilized regularly to help exclude puncturevine. Local conditions and suitable lawn care matter. Colorado State University Extension
Mowing alone Not a dependable control method UC IPM says mowing is ineffective because puncturevine grows low to the ground. UC IPM

Why control needs to be repeated

Check the area for seedlings throughout the growing season and remove each before it produces seed. UC IPM reports that puncturevine seeds may remain viable in soil for up to five years; this is a reported maximum, not a guaranteed survival time for every seed or site. Avoid carrying burs or seed into clean areas on shoes, mower wheels, or carts.

What not to rely on

  • Mowing by itself: It usually misses this low-growing plant and is not effective control, according to UC IPM.
  • A one-time cleanup: New seedlings can emerge, and seeds may persist in soil for years. Keep monitoring and removing plants before they set seed.
  • Biological weevils as a guaranteed fix: Weevils have been introduced in some areas, but suppression is cyclic and not always effective; they are not a dependable homeowner control prescription. UC IPM
