A small Chinese muntjac appears to charge a much larger rhinoceros in a video from ZOO Wrocław, Poland. The zoo says the clip is authentic: keeper Kamil Guzik filmed it, and the animals are familiar exhibit-mates—not opponents in a dangerous fight. Zoo staff explain the muntjac’s display as territorial behavior while a female muntjac was in heat; they say the rhino, Maruška, treated the encounter more like play.
What happens in the video?
The clip shows a male Chinese muntjac moving toward Maruška, a female greater one-horned rhinoceros, in their shared outdoor paddock at ZOO Wrocław. The size contrast is striking, but the zoo describes the animals as familiar with one another and says Maruška was not facing a serious attack.
The zoo’s January 10, 2026 explanatory note confirms that the video is authentic and was filmed by keeper Kamil Guzik. It also identifies the animals and explains the setting: they share an outdoor space in the Terai pavilion, while each has a separate off-exhibit holding area. ZOO Wrocław’s explanatory note
Why did the muntjac charge the rhino?
According to the zoo, the male muntjac was displaying territorial behavior while the female muntjac was in heat. That is the zoo’s explanation of this particular encounter, not evidence that anyone measured the animals’ hormone levels.

Wrocław hoofed-animal keeper Maciej Okupnik added that muntjacs are territorial and mark territory with scent glands around their eyes, while rhinos generally tolerate other animals. He described the scene as “more like theatre” and said Maruška seemed to be having a little fun. These are the keeper’s interpretations of the animals’ behavior, rather than conclusions that can be established from the video alone. Wrocław.pl’s account of the keeper’s explanation
Who are Maruška and the muntjac?
The zoo identifies the rhino as Maruška, a female Indian rhinoceros, also known as a greater one-horned rhinoceros. It says she was born in Plzeň, Czechia, in 2014 and arrived at Wrocław from Touroparc Zoo in France in 2019. The muntjac pair has lived in the Terai pavilion since 2012.

Naming varies between sources: the zoo’s English note calls the pair “Muntjac Mom” and “Muntjac Dad,” while Wrocław municipal coverage and other reports refer to the male as Tata. The individual muntjac in the video is therefore commonly identified in local coverage as Tata. The zoo presents the shared exhibit as a multispecies habitat; the clip itself does not establish how these species interact in the wild. ZOO Wrocław’s background on the animals Wrocław.pl’s report
Was the rhinoceros really 1.7 tons?
“1.7-ton” is a rounded figure used in media coverage, not a precise weight supplied in the zoo’s explanatory note. The zoo instead described the rhino as “a hundred times heavier” than the muntjac. Futurism reproduced AFP’s January 9, 2026 description of a “1.7-tonne rhino”; treat that as an attributed headline comparison, not a measurement documented by the zoo. Futurism’s account

Why the size mismatch can be misleading
A dramatic approach by a much smaller animal can look like a fight when clipped into a short video. In this case, the zoo’s account places the display in the context of the animals’ shared, managed exhibit and the muntjac pair’s behavior. The keeper’s reading is that Maruška was familiar with the deer and not seriously threatened. The footage shows what happened in that moment; it does not, by itself, prove an animal’s intent.
