Am Davidson Seamount vor Kalifornien wurden Tausende Tiefsee-Oktopusse in Nestern auf warmem Meeresboden beobachtet. Es handelt sich nicht um ein einziges riesiges Ei: Die Weibchen brüten jeweils ihre eigenen Eier aus. Wärme aus dem Untergrund könnte dabei helfen, dass die Eier deutlich schneller schlüpfen als bei anderen bekannten Tiefsee-Oktopussen.
Was wurde am Davidson Seamount entdeckt?
Forschende fanden am Fuß des Davidson Seamount zwei sogenannte Octopusgärten: Ansammlungen brütender Tiefsee-Oktopusse und ihrer Nester. Der Seamount liegt etwa 80 Meilen südwestlich von Monterey, Kalifornien. NOAA beschreibt ihn als Unterwasservulkan, der seit ungefähr 9,8 Millionen Jahren nicht mehr ausgebrochen ist.
Die Bezeichnung „Garten“ meint hier keine einzelne Kolonie mit einem gemeinsamen Gelege. Viele Weibchen sitzen jeweils über ihren eigenen Eiern. Die Tiere wurden als Muusoctopus robustus, auch Pearl octopus genannt, identifiziert. Laut Associated Press sind sie etwa so groß wie eine Grapefruit.
Warum brüten die Oktopusse an einem Vulkan?
Obwohl der Davidson Seamount ein alter, erloschener Vulkan ist, tritt an seinem Fuß warmes Wasser aus dem Meeresboden aus. NOAA gibt dessen Temperatur mit etwa 50 °F (rund 10 °C) an. Die Weibchen legen ihre Eier auf erwärmtem Gestein ab und brüten kopfüber darüber; sie bewegen beziehungsweise wenden die Eier.

Die Wärme scheint die Entwicklung der Embryonen zu beschleunigen. NOAA-Forschungsökologe Chad King beschrieb die Beobachtung so: “We had no idea that there were thousands of octopus mothers taking advantage of warm water escaping the seafloor, which accelerates the development of their eggs.”
Wie schnell schlüpfen die Eier?
Associated Press berichtete 2023, dass die Forschenden die Nester über drei Jahre beobachteten und den Entwicklungsstand der Eier an 31 Nestern dokumentierten. Dem Bericht zufolge schlüpfen die Eier an den warmen Neststandorten nach ungefähr 21 Monaten. Bei anderen bekannten Tiefsee-Oktopus-Eiern dauert die Entwicklung mindestens vier Jahre.

Welchen Vorteil könnte die kürzere Brutzeit bringen?
Während der Brut bewacht das Weibchen seine Eier und bleibt bei ihnen. Eine kürzere Entwicklungszeit kann bedeuten, dass die Eier weniger lange Räubern ausgesetzt sind. Die AP berichtete, dass die Forschenden darin einen möglichen Vorteil der warmen Nester sehen. Janet Voight, Oktopusbiologin am Field Museum und Mitautorin der Studie, sagte laut AP: “There are clear advantages of basically sitting in this natural hot tub.”

Ist das der „goldene Klumpen“ aus dem Golf von Alaska?
Nein. Der Octopusgarten am Davidson Seamount ist ein anderes Tiefseephänomen als das einzelne „golden orb“-Objekt, das NOAA 2023 im Golf von Alaska fand. Dieses etwa zehn Zentimeter große biologische Objekt konnte NOAA zunächst nicht identifizieren. Die Davidson-Entdeckung besteht dagegen aus vielen brütenden Oktopusweibchen und ihren Nestern.

Der Davidson Seamount liegt in einer Managementzone, für die NOAA Schutzregeln beschreibt. Unterhalb von 3.000 Fuß sind dort laut NOAA die Entnahme, Störung, Verletzung und der Besitz von Schutzgebietsressourcen verboten. Zugleich können bestehende Fischereien in Gewässern oberhalb des Seamounts weiterhin stattfinden; daraus folgt kein pauschales Fischereiverbot.
