The answer depends on what you count. Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries publishes an annual series for aquaculture sites in seawater, covering 2006–2025. The latest year listed is 2025, but the Directorate’s page does not display the spreadsheet’s 2025 total. Without that cell value, an exact current count cannot be stated reliably. The series is available on the Directorate’s aquaculture statistics page.
Why “fish farms” does not have one official count
“Fish farm” can refer to a place where fish are raised, a permit to farm aquatic organisms, a company, or a location with fish in it on a particular day. Norway’s Directorate of Fisheries publishes separate statistics for sites, licences and companies with production. Those figures use different counting units and are not interchangeable.
The latest annual site series is titled “Total number of sites in sea water 2006–2025.” It counts seawater aquaculture sites, not companies or licences, and the page’s listing alone does not reveal the 2025 spreadsheet value. For an exact answer, use the spreadsheet’s 2025 cell and identify it as a seawater-site count.
What the Directorate counts in its aquaculture statistics
The Directorate’s statistical population consists of active commercial, research, education and development aquaculture licences that had production at some point during the reference year. Reference years are calendar years. The statistics cover more than finfish: molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms and algae are also included in the broader aquaculture scope; algae have been included since 2015. Because licences, companies and sites answer different questions, choose the series that matches the question:
- Seawater sites: the number of sites in the Directorate’s seawater site series for a specified year.
- Licences: permits included in the relevant official licence statistics; a licence is not a physical location.
- Companies with production: companies recorded as producing during the reference year; a company is not necessarily one site.
- Approved localities: places recorded in the Aquaculture Register, whether or not they held stock at a particular moment.
- Stocked sites on a particular date: a date-specific question that cannot be answered simply by reading an annual site total.
Does every registered site have fish in it?
No. The Directorate’s locality register describes approved locations and provides attributes such as locality name and number, status, capacity, water environment, species, holders, permits and municipality. Its records do not mean fish or shellfish are present at the time someone checks.

The public data catalogue explains that mapped points are approximate locality midpoints, that not all localities contain fish or shellfish at all times, and that withdrawn or discontinued localities may also appear. Biomass presence can be checked against monthly reporting. A map-point count should therefore not be presented as the count of farms currently stocked. The relevant sources are the Directorate’s locality layer and the public catalogue’s Akvakultur – lokaliteter WFS entry.
How current are the annual figures?
The Directorate says preliminary annual figures are released in May and final figures in October. It may revise figures when new or updated information becomes available. When quoting a total, give its reference year and the date you accessed the table or spreadsheet; a current web page can point to a series whose latest year is not yet visible in the page text.

How many salmon farming sites are there?
The seawater site series is not, by its title, a salmon-only count. Norway’s wider aquaculture statistics include multiple organism groups, while the locality register includes species information for individual locations. A salmon-only total requires a species-specific count with a clear reference year and activity definition; it should not be inferred from the overall seawater-site series.
