Choose Wisdom Panel if relatives or tier choice matter
Wisdom Panel is the more natural fit if you want to choose among different levels of coverage, or if matching your dog with genetic relatives and viewing an ancestry tree are priorities. Breed Discovery is the relevant option for its documented relatives and three-generation tree; check its current product details before ordering. If you specifically want a broader advertised health panel and a genetic consultation for at-risk findings, compare Premium’s current terms with the conditions you care about.
Choose Basepaws if you want a combined report
Basepaws may suit you if you want breed, health-marker, and trait information in the combined product described on its page, and you are comfortable with its stated 4–6 week estimate and online, English-language report. The reviewed page does not establish a relatives-matching feature, so do not choose it expecting the kind of matching described for Wisdom Panel.

A consumer DNA result is not a diagnosis or treatment plan. Basepaws says its animal-health information is educational and is not intended to replace discussion with an animal-health professional. Ask your veterinarian whether a particular result would affect screening, care, or treatment before relying on it.
What the advertised counts can—and cannot—tell you
The brands use different categories: Wisdom Panel lists health “tests,” while Basepaws lists health “markers.” Their totals do not show whether the same conditions or genetic variants are covered, how useful a finding is for your dog, or whether either test is more accurate. Wisdom Health has published a technical paper describing a local-ancestry classifier that maps breed ancestry along chromosome segments and compares its approach with other algorithms, including for highly mixed samples. - Select the exact Wisdom Panel product. Breed Discovery, Essential, and Premium are not interchangeable; confirm the features and health conditions listed for the tier you intend to buy.
- Look for the condition, not just the total. If you are checking for a particular inherited risk, verify that the test explicitly covers it and discuss the result’s meaning with your veterinarian.
- Plan around estimates, not promises. Wisdom Panel’s Breed Discovery estimate begins after lab receipt; Basepaws gives a 4–6 week estimate. Neither figure should be treated as a guaranteed total time from purchase to report.
- Confirm shipping for your location. Basepaws’ prepaid return-shipping information differs for US and international customers. Check the terms shown for your address and selected kit.
