They can offer useful clues about ancestry, but they are not a precise family tree, a guarantee of appearance, or proof of registration-based purebred status.
What a dog DNA breed percentage means
A breed percentage is the testing provider’s estimate of how much of your dog’s DNA its method assigns to a particular breed or population. The company compares genetic markers or stretches of DNA with reference samples and uses an algorithm to classify the matches. The result describes your dog’s DNA under that provider’s system; it is not a certainty score for a specific ancestor.
Embark explains that it examines long stretches of the genome in dogs of known breeds from its reference panel, then totals the stretches it associates with each breed to estimate ancestry. Embark’s explanation of breed ancestry testing describes that approach. A percentage should not be read as a precise fraction of your dog’s recent family tree unless the provider specifically supports that interpretation for your report.
Why your dog’s results may not match its appearance
Appearance is not a reliable way to confirm or rule out a DNA estimate. A dog can inherit a combination of traits that does not make every ancestry component obvious, and a small reported component may not correspond to a visible feature. Treat appearance as context, not as a test of whether the result is correct.

How to interpret small percentages and unclear categories
Small components deserve more caution than a clear, substantial ancestry estimate. They may reflect a real signal, an ambiguous match, or the provider’s choices about categories and reporting thresholds. The cited provider materials do not establish a universal percentage below which a result should be considered unreliable.
Some reports use categories for ancestry that the provider cannot assign confidently to a specific breed. Read the company’s explanation of the exact label in your report. Embark notes that an ancestry test may not exclude a small amount of mixture from a closely related breed, and that some outcomes can remain unresolved. Embark’s explanation of its “Supermutt” category describes one provider-specific example; other companies may use different labels or methods.

- Compare the larger components with what you know about your dog’s family history, while allowing for gaps in that history.
- Check what the provider says about any small or unresolved component rather than treating the label as a definitive ancestor.
- Contact the provider if the report conflicts with known pedigree information or its own category guidance.
Why two dog DNA tests can give different results
Companies do not necessarily use the same reference samples, genetic markers, algorithms, breed groupings, or minimum thresholds for reporting a result. Related breeds can be especially difficult to separate, and a small component might be reported by one provider but grouped, omitted, or left unresolved by another. A difference between reports does not by itself show that one is fraudulent or that one company is definitively right.
When comparing reports, check which breeds and populations each company covers, how it handles small or ambiguous components, and which version of its system applies to your sample. Wisdom Panel says its BCSYS1.2 system applies to samples tested on or after June 2, 2026, and that the system covers more than 430 breeds with a reference panel of more than 31,000 samples. These are Wisdom Panel’s own, date-sensitive specifications—not independent confirmation of any individual dog’s result. Wisdom Panel’s account of its system and reference panel provides the company’s details.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can a DNA test prove your dog is purebred?
No. A DNA ancestry result and a registry’s pedigree records answer different questions. Embark states that “a genetic ancestry test can neither determine nor negate purebred status.” Its explanation notes that purebred status may depend on human-defined registration requirements and documented ancestors; ancestry testing also does not decide whether a dog physically conforms to a breed standard. Embark’s discussion of DNA testing and purebred status explains this distinction.

A report that is consistent with a breed’s genetic signature is not a substitute for the relevant registry’s records. Likewise, a breed percentage alone does not establish that a dog meets a conformation standard.

What breed results can—and cannot—tell you
- They can: provide a provider’s estimate of ancestry based on its reference data and classification method.
- They cannot, on their own: identify a specific recent ancestor with certainty, guarantee that your dog will look a certain way, or settle registry status and physical conformity.
- They may differ across providers: because the underlying samples, methods, categories, and reporting thresholds can differ.
