The best Spanish cat names are the ones whose meaning, sound and origin you understand. Many popular picks are ordinary Spanish words, such as luna (“moon”). Others are given names used in Spanish-speaking communities, and some are foods or cultural references that only sound Spanish. Sorting a long list by those categories before you fall for a name makes the choice far easier.

The Cats.com article “150 Perfecto Spanish Names for Your Cat,” by Amy Brown-Towry and last updated August 24, 2026, groups its suggestions into male, female and unisex names. It presents them as inspiration. Its meanings and associations are editorial glosses, not verified etymologies, so check each one before you rely on it.

Start by sorting names into categories

A list of Spanish-sounding names mixes several kinds of words. Knowing which kind you are looking at tells you what the name literally means and whether it is a word, a name or a reference.

Category Examples from the Cats.com list What the label tells you What to verify
Spanish vocabulary Luna, Azul, Dulce, Río, Corazón, Azúcar, Jefe, Chico A word with a dictionary meaning you can look up Exact meaning, accent mark, and whether the word is used the way the list suggests
Given names used in Spanish-speaking communities Sofía, Esperanza, Blanca A personal name that may also be an ordinary word Whether you want a name with a person’s identity attached, and its origin
Food, place or culture references Churro, Azúcar A borrowed or descriptive term, often tied to a dish or region Whether the reference fits your cat and whether it carries a regional meaning you want

Some names fall into two categories at once. Esperanza is both a word meaning “hope” and a given name, and Río is both a word meaning “river” and a common surname-style term. Pick the sense you intend and use it consistently.

Spanish words that work as cat names

These are standard Spanish words. The meanings below are the usual dictionary senses; confirm them in a Spanish dictionary before you use them publicly.

  • Luna: “moon.” The Real Academia Española entry for luna begins with the Latin origin and defines the word first as Earth’s natural satellite, with other senses following. It is a feminine noun, so it suits a female cat in grammatical terms, though the gender of a word does not have to match the cat.
  • Azul: “blue.” An invariable adjective, so it does not change form for a male or female name. It suits cats with blue-grey coats or blue eyes.
  • Dulce: “sweet.” Also an adjective that does not change form, so it works for any cat, though it is a more playful choice for a cat with a sweet temperament.
  • Río: “river.” A masculine noun. Keep the accent on the í if you write it in Spanish spelling.
  • Corazón: “heart.” A masculine noun, with the accent on the final syllable. It suits an affectionate cat.
  • Azúcar: “sugar.” A masculine noun, with the accent on the first syllable. It is a food-derived word used as a pet name for a sweet, cuddly cat.
  • Jefe: “boss” or “chief.” Used as a masculine noun. It suits a confident cat who likes to supervise the household, but it is a teasing name rather than a neutral one.
  • Chico: “boy” or “young man,” used informally. It is a masculine word and works best for a male cat who suits the label.

Given names used in Spanish-speaking communities

These names are personal names that are used in Spanish-speaking communities. They are not automatically Spanish words, even when they sound like one.

  • Sofía: a given name in Spanish-speaking communities, written with an accent on the í. It is a name with a long history outside Spanish, so describe it as a given name rather than a Spanish word.
  • Esperanza: a given name that is also the Spanish word for “hope.” It is a good choice if you want a name that is both a word and a person’s name.
  • Blanca: the feminine form of the adjective meaning “white,” also used as a given name. It suits a light-coloured cat, and the meaning is clear to Spanish speakers.

Food, place and culture references

Some names on the list point to food, places or wider Latin American culture rather than to a single Spanish word. Churro, a fried dough pastry, is a food name that is also used as an everyday noun. Such names are fun for a cat with a round shape or a playful character, but present them as food-inspired rather than as a standard Spanish name. Do not describe a food or cultural reference as traditional or typical of one country without a source for that claim.

How to choose between names

A useful shortlist weighs five factors. The Cats.com list and a 2024 academic study of cat names both point to appearance and personality as common naming motives, so these factors are a practical way to narrow options.

  1. Sound and ease of calling. Say the name aloud from across the room. Two-syllable names with clear vowels, such as Luna or Río, are easy for most cats to recognise.
  2. Literal meaning. Decide whether you want a word, a name or a reference, and read its meaning before you commit.
  3. Fit with coat colour or appearance. Azul suits a grey or blue-toned cat, and Blanca suits a white one. This matches the appearance-based naming the 2024 study found in its own sample.
  4. Personality or behaviour. Dulce, Corazón and Jefe describe very different temperaments.
  5. Category preference. Choose whether a word, a given name, or a food or culture reference fits your household.

Check meanings before you commit

  • Look up each candidate in the Real Academia Española dictionary, which is the standard reference for Spanish vocabulary.
  • Check the accent marks. Spanish spelling uses them for stress and meaning, so write Río, Sofía, Corazón and Azúcar with their accents.
  • For given names, confirm that the name is used in Spanish-speaking communities and is not only a brand, a famous person or a character.
  • Check whether a food or place name has a different meaning in your region before you use it.
  • Test the name for a week with the people who will call the cat, and check that no one in the household finds it awkward to say.

What the sources can and cannot tell you

The Cats.com article is an editorial inspiration list. Its popularity descriptions are not measured rankings, and no Spanish cat-name ranking or usable prevalence figure has been established in the sources reviewed for this article. Catster’s separate list of Spanish cat names also mixes name forms, vocabulary, foods and place or culture references, which is why sorting by category is useful before you choose. The 2024 academic study by Maisa S. Jaber in ONOMÁZEIN 64 (June 2024) documents appearance and food associations in cat given names. That dataset is not a Spanish naming study, so its findings should not be taken as evidence of Spanish-specific preferences.

Read the lists for ideas, not as verified meanings. The Cats.com article and the Catster list are useful starting points; the meaning you give your cat is the one you verify.
