Nasal discharge in cats is a sign, not a diagnosis. Most episodes are linked to an upper respiratory infection, and feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus are the most common viral causes. Many uncomplicated infections are managed with supportive care. But discharge can also come from a foreign body, dental disease, a fungal infection, or a nasal growth, and the discharge itself usually cannot tell these apart.
Get veterinary care immediately if your cat has any difficulty breathing. Arrange an examination if the discharge is bloody, comes from one nostril, persists, keeps returning, or appears alongside poor appetite or lethargy. Only a veterinarian can determine the cause and choose a treatment.
The usual cause: upper respiratory infection
Feline upper respiratory disease is a syndrome that involves the nose, eyes, and sometimes the mouth. The Merck Veterinary Manual (last updated November 2024) names these principal agents:
- Feline herpesvirus type 1 (FHV-1) and feline calicivirus (FCV), which account for many acute infections.
- Chlamydia felis and Mycoplasma felis.
- Bordetella bronchiseptica, a bacterium that may contribute, especially in shelters, catteries, and other high-density settings.
Mixed infections can occur, and it is often difficult to tell FHV-1 from FCV by symptoms alone. A cat’s signs cannot reliably identify which virus is responsible.

Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine reports that up to 97% of cats are exposed to feline herpesvirus during their lifetime, and that the virus causes a lifelong infection in up to 80% of exposed cats. That page did not show a publication date, so treat these figures as the university’s estimates rather than current population statistics. Because the infection can persist for life, a cat that has had one episode may have another. Repeated episodes are a reason to have a veterinarian review the pattern.
What the discharge looks like
Discharge may be clear, mucus-like, or mucopurulent (thicker and containing pus). Appearance alone does not prove a bacterial cause, so the color or thickness of the discharge should not drive decisions about medication.
Causes when discharge lingers or changes
Chronic nasal inflammation can remain after an acute viral infection has passed. In other cases, the discharge points to a different problem. Discharge that changes from mucopurulent to bloody or blood-tinged is a concerning pattern, because it can occur with fungal disease or nasal growths. The causes below are clues that a veterinarian uses to narrow the possibilities, not diagnoses in themselves.
Foreign body
A sudden discharge from one side of the nose, especially with pawing at the face, can suggest that something is lodged in the nasal passage.

Dental disease
Infection from dental disease can extend toward the nasal region, producing discharge on one side. Dental problems are therefore part of the differential when a veterinarian examines a cat with persistent discharge.
Fungal infection
Fungal infections such as cryptococcosis can cause chronic nasal discharge. Because fungal disease is not a routine infection, it is one reason persistent discharge should be investigated rather than repeatedly treated at home.
Nasal growths and other structural disease
Nasal growths, including neoplasia (tumors), and other structural problems can cause chronic discharge. Blood in the discharge is a reason for prompt examination.
Irritants and allergy
Environmental irritants such as smoke, dust, or irritating gases can inflame the nasal lining. Allergic rhinitis is possible, but the Merck Veterinary Manual describes it as uncommon in cats.

Other signs that often appear with nasal discharge
In an upper respiratory infection, nasal discharge commonly appears alongside other signs. Watch for:
- Sneezing
- Nasal congestion
- Conjunctivitis or eye discharge
- Fever
- Reduced appetite or lower energy
- Mouth ulcers in some cats
When to act now and when to book a visit
Use the pattern of signs to decide how quickly your cat needs care. Nasal discharge alone does not tell you whether the cause is viral, bacterial, fungal, dental, or something else.
| Pattern | What it may indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Difficulty breathing, open-mouth breathing, or blue-tinged gums | Compromised breathing; serious disease | Urgent veterinary care now. Do not wait to see whether home care works. |
| Marked weakness or dehydration | Severe illness | Urgent veterinary assessment. |
| Bloody or blood-tinged discharge | Can accompany causes beyond routine infection, including fungal disease or nasal growths | Veterinary examination. |
| Discharge mainly from one nostril, especially with sudden onset and pawing at the face | Possible foreign body | Veterinary examination. |
| Discharge with poor appetite or lethargy | Illness beyond mild nasal signs | Veterinary examination. |
| Discharge that persists, keeps returning, worsens, or changes in character | Possible chronic or non-routine cause | Veterinary examination. |
| Sneezing and clear or mucus-like discharge in a cat that is eating and acting normally | A typical short-term upper respiratory episode | Ask your veterinarian about supportive care. Book a visit if the signs persist or return. |
How veterinarians investigate persistent discharge
Diagnosis begins with the history and a physical examination. The tests a veterinarian recommends depend on how long the signs have lasted, how severe they are, and what the examination finds. Testing commonly follows this sequence:
- History and physical examination: onset, duration, which nostril or nostrils are affected, vaccination history, and exposure to other cats.
- Respiratory samples or PCR testing: to look for infectious agents.
- Radiographs or CT imaging: to assess the nasal passages.
- Rhinoscopy: direct visual examination of the inside of the nose.
- Nasal biopsy: a tissue sample for laboratory examination.
Even advanced testing does not always find a cause. The Merck Veterinary Manual (last updated November 2024) notes that advanced imaging and biopsy may identify a specific cause, such as fungal rhinitis, neoplasia, or a foreign body, in as few as 36% of cats with nasal discharge. A cat can go through extensive testing without a named cause, and the veterinarian will plan treatment around what the findings support.

Treatment: what is typically done
Treatment follows the diagnosis. In an uncomplicated infection, care is largely supportive.
Supportive care at home
- Keep your cat eating and drinking. If appetite is poor, ask your veterinarian about ways to support nutrition.
- Gently remove discharge from the face with a soft, damp cloth.
- Use environmental humidification, such as a room humidifier, to ease the nasal passages.
- Ask your veterinarian whether saline drops or nebulization are appropriate. Merck notes they may help loosen thick secretions, but they should be used only when a veterinarian directs them.
These measures support comfort. They are not a universal treatment plan, and they do not replace an examination when the warning signs above are present.
Medications and when they are used
The Merck Veterinary Manual states: “Antibiotics are not effective against viruses.” A veterinarian may prescribe an antibiotic when a bacterial infection is suspected or confirmed. Antivirals or other treatments may be appropriate in selected cases. Because the right medication depends on the diagnosis, no single drug suits every cat with nasal discharge.
Hospital care for severe illness
Severe cases may need fluids, nutritional support, or hospitalization so that breathing, hydration, and eating can be monitored.

Spread and prevention
Feline respiratory agents spread through respiratory or ocular secretions and through objects contaminated with them. Vaccination against common respiratory viruses can reduce the severity and duration of illness, but it does not guarantee that infection will be prevented. Vaccine schedules and risk-specific recommendations change over time, so ask your veterinarian for the current advice for your cat.
Hygiene and limiting contact with infected cats reduce transmission. These steps matter most in shelters and catteries, where Bordetella and other agents are more likely to circulate.
