4 Common Causes of Flatulence in Cats

Gas in cats usually traces back to diet change or food intolerance, fast eating and swallowed air, intestinal parasites, or digestive inflammation. Here is how each differs and when to call the vet.

Flatulence in cats usually traces back to one of four groups: a recent diet change or food intolerance, eating or drinking too fast and swallowing air, intestinal parasites or infection, or gastrointestinal inflammation and other digestive disease. Gas alone cannot tell these apart. Treat the list as a set of possibilities to discuss with your veterinarian, not as a diagnosis, and seek veterinary advice when gas is increased or persistent, or when it comes with bloating, discomfort, or other illness signs.

The four causes at a glance

The table below compares the four groups on the points that help you describe your cat accurately to a veterinarian. None of these features proves a cause on its own.

Cause group Typical context Other signs to note How it is usually confirmed
Diet change or food intolerance A recent switch in food, new treats, table food, scavenged food, or access to another pet’s meals Digestive upset; the source describes no further signs specific to this group Detailed diet history, then a veterinarian-directed diet trial if indicated
Rapid eating and swallowed air Gulping food or water quickly Not stated; no additional signs are linked to swallowed air in the source Feeding history and examination; no specific test is described
Intestinal parasites or infection Not stated in the source; exposure history may be relevant Nonspecific gastrointestinal signs Fecal examination; treatment usually requires veterinarian-prescribed medication
Gastrointestinal inflammation or other digestive disease Often of unknown cause, particularly for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) Vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea, bloody stools, lethargy, reduced appetite Blood work, fecal examination, imaging, and sometimes a food trial or biopsy

The four common causes

1. Diet change or food intolerance

An abrupt change in food can upset digestion, and a cat may react badly to a food without any immune involvement. That kind of reaction is an intolerance; an immune-mediated food allergy is a separate category. Veterinary nutrition guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals (its “Food Intolerance in Cats” article, which does not show a publication date in the version reviewed) recommends a detailed history of current and past foods and any possible access to other foods when a food reaction is suspected.

That history should cover more than the main meal. Include treats, table food, scavenged food, and any time your cat eats from another pet’s bowl. A reaction that seems to follow a food change is worth describing carefully, but the suspected trigger is best confirmed through a diet trial your veterinarian directs. There is no universal “gas-reducing” food, and switching foods on your own is not a diagnosis.

2. Eating quickly and swallowing air

Cats that gulp food or water take in air along with it, and that air has to leave the digestive tract. Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences makes this point in its article “Gassy Pets: A Stinky Situation” (May 26, 2017). Yuri Lawrence, a veterinary specialist at the college, is quoted in that article saying: “Swallowed air from eating or drinking water too fast often makes the largest contribution to gas in the gastrointestinal tract.” That article addresses pets in general rather than cats specifically, so read its guidance as applicable to cats without assuming the same level of certainty for every feline case.

The same article also discusses dietary legumes as a possible contributor and suggests smaller, more frequent meals as a general measure. Before changing your cat’s feeding routine, check with your veterinarian. If your cat is a fast eater, a slow-feeder bowl is one optional practical aid. It is a way to slow eating, not a proven treatment for gas.

3. Intestinal parasites or infection

Intestinal parasites can produce nonspecific gastrointestinal signs, which means gas alone cannot show that parasites are present. Cornell University’s Feline Health Center, in its “Gastrointestinal Parasites of Cats” article (updated 2018), explains that veterinary diagnosis commonly relies on fecal examination and that treatment usually requires a veterinarian-prescribed medication.

Avoid treating gas as a reason to give over-the-counter dewormers. The same Cornell article reports GI parasitism prevalence rates as high as 45% in some cat populations, and estimates roundworm prevalence at 25% to 75% of cats, with rates often higher in kittens. These are population-level figures for parasites, not estimates of how often flatulence is caused by parasites. No source reviewed establishes what share of gassy cats have a parasite-related cause.

4. Gastrointestinal inflammation or other digestive disease

Inflammatory bowel disease can impair digestion and absorption, but its cause is often unknown, and its signs overlap with many other conditions. Cornell’s Feline Health Center article on inflammatory bowel disease lists vomiting, weight loss, diarrhea, bloody stools, lethargy, and reduced appetite among its possible signs. Diagnosis may involve blood work, fecal examination, imaging, and sometimes a food trial or biopsy.

Ordinary flatulence does not mean a cat has IBD. Gas is one of the least specific symptoms in feline digestive medicine, so it becomes a reason for a veterinary visit mainly when it is paired with the other signs above.

What to record before you call the veterinarian

A clear history makes the first appointment more useful. Write down the following for a few days before the visit:

  • Every food, treat, and table-food item your cat eats, and any recent change in brand, formula, or schedule
  • Any access to other pets’ food, scavenged food, or outdoor hunting
  • How often gas occurs, and whether it is new, increasing, or persistent
  • Stool changes, including consistency, frequency, and any blood
  • Appetite, energy level, and any vomiting
  • Changes in body weight, if you can track them at home
  • How quickly your cat eats, and whether it gulps water

When to contact your veterinarian

Texas A&M’s guidance specifically advises consulting a veterinarian about excess gas or signs of bloating and discomfort. Contact your veterinarian promptly if gas is increased or persistent, or if it appears with any of these signs:
