Yes, cats can get hiccups. A hiccup-like episode in a cat is an involuntary contraction of the diaphragm, and many episodes are brief and harmless, especially after a fast meal. The harder part is telling a hiccup apart from a cough, gagging, or a breathing problem, because the signs can look similar to an owner. If the episodes are frequent or lasting, or your cat is breathing with effort, contact your veterinarian.

What a cat hiccup looks and sounds like

Veterinary sources describe feline hiccups as involuntary, rhythmic contractions of the diaphragm, the muscle that drives breathing. Depending on the cat, the event may produce a small, repeated sound, or it may show up only as a subtle jerk of the chest or belly. Because the movement can be quiet, many owners notice it only when they watch closely or when the cat is sitting still.

Because of that, owners sometimes label other behaviors as hiccups. Coughing, gagging, retching, and noisy breathing can all be mistaken for a hiccup, and some of them point to problems that need a vet. Treat a hiccup as a working hypothesis until you have looked at the pattern more closely.

Common possible triggers

No single cause is established for feline hiccups. The two explanations that appear most often in veterinary-reviewed material are below. Either one may apply to a particular cat, but neither can be confirmed from the sound alone.

Eating too quickly

PetMD describes fast eating as a possible trigger. A cat that gulps food may swallow extra air along with it, and the stomach stretching and the swallowing action can set off diaphragm contractions. Cats Protection makes the same link, noting that eating too much or too quickly can be involved. If episodes reliably follow meals, this is the first pattern to look at.

Hairball-related throat irritation

Catster, which reviewed its article with a veterinarian and updated it on September 15, 2026, describes throat irritation from a cat trying to dislodge a hairball as another possible explanation. This is one reason a hiccup-like sound and retching can occur close together. Do not assume a hairball is present because of a sound. If your cat is retching without producing anything, or hacks up hair repeatedly, that is a reason to ask your vet about it.

Hiccup, cough, gag, or breathing problem?

The table below compares the signs owners most often confuse. The right-hand column is the practical question to answer before deciding what to do next.

What you observe More consistent with a hiccup More concerning or needs a vet
Sound Brief, repeated, hiccup-like sound or small chest jerks Persistent cough, wheezing, or harsh noisy breathing
Timing Often after eating or drinking; episode ends on its own Continues for a long time, recurs frequently, or occurs without any meal link
Breathing Normal breathing between episodes Open-mouth breathing or visible effort
Behavior Eating, drinking, playing and resting normally Lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, or changed behavior
Retching or gagging Not present Repeated retching, especially if nothing is brought up; the sources reviewed do not establish a time cutoff for this

Modest home steps for meal-related episodes

If episodes seem linked to meals, the sources suggest keeping changes simple. Work through these steps in order and stop if the episodes are frequent or any warning sign appears.

  1. Offer smaller portions. Splitting the daily amount into more, smaller meals is the first adjustment PetMD suggests.
  2. Slow the meal. PetMD advises placing a sufficiently large object in the bowl so the cat cannot gulp food in large mouthfuls. A purpose-made slow-feeder bowl is a reasonable option in the same category. The source does not test or recommend a specific bowl, and no source shows that a bowl stops hiccups. Choose one that is too large to swallow whole and easy to wash.
  3. Watch the next several meals. Note whether episodes still follow eating once portions and speed have changed. A reliable pattern is more useful to your vet than a single observation.

Do not force food or water, do not try folk remedies, and do not make substantial diet changes without veterinary advice.

Recording an episode for your vet

A short video can help a veterinarian assess an episode, particularly when the event is brief or hard to reproduce in a clinic. Film the whole cat, not only the chest, and include the sound if you can. Note the time, what the cat had just eaten or drunk, and how long the episode lasted. This is practical guidance from our editors rather than a finding from the sources.

When to contact a veterinarian

Book a routine vet visit if the episodes are frequent or persistent, or if they come with other symptoms. Cats Protection advises veterinary advice when other symptoms are present. Do not wait for a pattern to prove itself in those cases.

Seek urgent care if your cat shows any breathing difficulty, including open-mouth breathing or marked effort to breathe. Cats Protection lists difficulty breathing among its emergency signs in its “Emergencies” guidance. Do not assume a breathing change is a hiccup.

What is not established

The available sources do not set a validated time limit for how long a hiccup episode can last before it becomes a concern, and they do not provide a prevalence figure for hiccups in cats. Advice on duration found in individual articles is not a clinical rule, so use the warning signs above rather than a stopwatch alone.

The sources reviewed are PetMD (fast eating, swallowed air, possible hairball irritation, and feeding adjustments), Cats Protection’s “Cat hiccups” page and its “Emergencies” guidance, and Catster’s veterinarian-reviewed article updated September 15, 2026. None establishes that a particular cat’s hiccups have a particular cause.
