“Leaky gut” is the popular name for increased intestinal permeability, a change in how well the intestinal lining holds back what passes from the gut into the body. In dogs and cats, the signs usually linked to it, such as vomiting, weight loss, gas, and soft stool, are nonspecific and point to intestinal trouble rather than to one identifiable condition. The reliable path is a veterinary workup aimed at the underlying disease, and treatment follows what that workup finds. For dogs, a veterinarian-guided therapeutic diet trial has the strongest guideline support. For probiotics and related products, the evidence is tentative, and it does not show that a general supplement repairs the gut lining.
What “leaky gut” means in veterinary terms
The intestinal lining is a selective barrier. Increased intestinal permeability means that barrier lets more material pass through than normal. Veterinarians use the phrase to describe a possible change in barrier function that can accompany underlying intestinal disease.
VCA Animal Hospitals’ client resource “Leaky Gut Syndrome in Dogs,” updated December 10, 2024, states the limit plainly. Its authors, Malcolm Weir, DVM, MSc, MPH, and Catherine Barnette, DVM, write: “Leaky gut syndrome is not a medical diagnosis that can be proven or disproven.” For owners, that makes the label a reason to ask a veterinarian questions, not an answer to reach at home.
Signs that call for a veterinary exam
VCA lists weight loss, vomiting, flatulence, and soft stools among the gastrointestinal signs associated with concerns about intestinal permeability. Each one is nonspecific. The same signs occur with parasites, dietary problems, inflammatory bowel disease, and other conditions, so none of them on its own shows whether permeability has changed or why.

- vomiting or soft stool that keeps returning or does not resolve
- any weight loss, or a dog or cat that is not holding its weight
- severe signs, such as repeated vomiting, marked diarrhea, or obvious discomfort
- deterioration, such as lethargy, refusing food, or signs that worsen from one day to the next
What can contribute to intestinal damage or altered gut function
VCA’s resource on dogs names the following as possible contributors. They are possibilities that a veterinarian weighs against the history, examination, and tests. An owner cannot match a pet’s symptoms to a cause from this list alone.
Infection and abdominal trauma
Severe or acute intestinal infection and abdominal trauma are both named as possible contributors in dogs. The timing of onset and any known injury are part of the history a veterinarian uses to judge them.

Toxins and medications
- Toxin exposure. Keep household chemicals, plants, and other potential toxins out of reach.
- Medication overdose. Keep human medications away from pets, and dose prescribed drugs exactly as written.
- Long-term NSAID use. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can contribute when given over a long period. Do not stop or change a prescribed NSAID on your own; raise your concern with the prescribing veterinarian.
Food allergy and chronic malnutrition
Food allergy is a reason a diet trial is useful, covered below. Chronic malnutrition describes a long-term nutritional shortfall rather than a single poor meal, which is why a veterinarian will look at the pet’s overall diet and weight trend.
How a veterinarian investigates it
The goal is to find the underlying disease. The sequence below reflects VCA’s description of the workup and the systematic approach to chronic small-intestinal disorders in Allenspach’s 2013 review in Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice. Not every pet needs every step.

- History and physical exam. Expect questions about diet, treats, medications, how long signs have lasted, and how weight has changed. A written food log and medication list help.
- Fecal testing for parasites. Stool is checked for intestinal parasites.
- Blood work. A complete blood count and serum biochemistry profile.
- Imaging, if the case calls for it. Abdominal radiographs or ultrasound.
- Intestinal biopsy, if indicated. Tissue sampling to look for the cause of the intestinal disease.
- Ruling out causes outside the intestine. Allenspach stresses this step as part of a systematic workup of chronic small-intestinal disorders.
In dogs with suspected chronic inflammatory enteropathy, a diet trial can also serve as part of the diagnosis, as described in the next section.
Measuring permeability
Permeability can be measured. A 1995 study by Rutgers and colleagues, “Intestinal permeability testing in dogs with diet-responsive intestinal disease,” published in Journal of Small Animal Practice in July 1995, used differential sugar absorption to assess permeability in 15 dogs with diet-responsive intestinal disease. It is a small, older study limited to dogs with that kind of disease. It shows that the measurement is possible, but it does not validate “leaky gut” as a diagnosis that owners can make at home. The VCA and Allenspach sources do not present permeability testing as a routine screening step.

Natural gut repair: what the evidence supports
“Natural” describes an ingredient or approach, not a proven result. The table compares the main options and how far the evidence goes.
| Option | Dogs | Cats | Strength of evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Veterinarian-selected therapeutic diet trial | An ACVIM-endorsed consensus statement and systematic review on canine chronic inflammatory enteropathy supports it as a first diagnostic step for clinically stable dogs with suspected disease. | No feline-specific protocol matching the canine guideline is established in the veterinary sources cited here. | Guideline-level support for dogs; not established for cats |
| Probiotics, prebiotics, and postbiotics | A 2024 review by Schmitz in Veterinary Record (November 2024) reports emerging, tentative support in some dog gastrointestinal disorders. The canine consensus guideline describes their role as limited, with conditional recommendations in selected circumstances. | The same 2024 review reports emerging, tentative support in some cat gastrointestinal disorders. | Tentative to conditional |
| General “gut repair” supplements sold for leaky gut | No cited source establishes that these repair the intestinal lining. | Not established for a repair effect. | Not established |
Diet trials for dogs
For clinically stable dogs with suspected chronic inflammatory enteropathy, the ACVIM-endorsed consensus statement and systematic review, published online in 2025 or 2026, supports therapeutic diet trials as a first diagnostic intervention. Its key points are:

- Exclusive feeding. Each trial means feeding an appropriate therapeutic diet exclusively for at least two weeks, with no other foods or treats during that period.
- More than one trial. The guideline allows for considering multiple diet trials if the first does not settle the picture.
- Individual choice. The diet depends on the dog’s history, signs, and diagnostic findings. A veterinary hydrolyzed-protein diet is one of the therapeutic options discussed, not a default for every dog.
The guideline is written for clinically stable dogs. A dog that is not clinically stable needs a veterinary assessment before any trial is considered.
Probiotics and other biotics
Prebiotics are compounds that feed beneficial gut bacteria, probiotics are live microorganisms, and postbiotics are preparations of microbial products. The 2024 review in Veterinary Record describes them as tentatively supported in some dog and cat gastrointestinal disorders, not as established treatments. The canine consensus guideline gives them a limited role. Product and dose choices belong with your veterinarian, who can tie them to the diagnosis and monitor the response.
What is different for cats
Most of the detailed guidance on this topic concerns dogs. No feline-specific diet-trial protocol matching the canine consensus guideline is established in the veterinary sources cited here, so the dog schedule should not be copied for a cat. The tentative biotic evidence covers cats as well as dogs, but that does not make a probiotic a cat-specific treatment for leaky gut. A cat with these signs needs the same veterinary workup, and diet decisions should be made with a veterinarian who knows the cat’s history.
What to do next
- Book a veterinary exam for persistent or severe signs, any weight loss, or signs that are getting worse.
- Write down what your pet eats, including treats, table food, and supplements, along with any medications and the date signs started.
- Ask which parts of the workup above have been done and which still apply to your pet.
- If a diet trial is recommended for a dog, feed only the prescribed therapeutic diet for the full trial period, at least two weeks under the guideline, and report the result. For cats, ask your veterinarian how long a trial should run.
- Ask before starting a probiotic or other supplement, and tell your veterinarian about anything already being given.
- Do not stop or change prescribed NSAIDs or other medications without your veterinarian’s advice.
The label “leaky gut” can help you describe a concern to your vet, but the answer comes from the workup and from treating the cause that is found.
