To shop more humanely at a farmers market, ask the vendor specific questions about how the animals are raised, find out whether a named third-party certification backs the claim, and check that the claim covers the welfare issue you care about. Direct-to-consumer sales give you a chance to talk with the person who raised the animals, but a conversation is not an audit, so treat each answer as something to weigh rather than proof.
Start with what the claim actually covers
Welfare wording on signs, cartons, and packages is not interchangeable. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (ERS), in its January 30, 2025 report on table-egg labels, groups egg claims into families that describe different attributes: housing claims such as cage-free, free-range, and pasture-raised; claims about feed and other inputs; and third-party humane or comprehensive certifications. A claim in one family does not guarantee anything in another.
| Claim type | What it speaks to | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Housing claims (cage-free, free-range, pasture-raised) | How animals are housed and whether they have outdoor access, as each term defines it | Health care, handling, transport, or processing practices |
| Feed and input claims | What the animals are fed or what inputs are used | Space, housing, or how animals are handled |
| Third-party certification | Whether an outside program audits the farm against its own published standard | Anything outside that standard, and requirements that differ by program and by species |
| Meat and poultry animal-raising claims | USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) 2024 guidance covers how these claims should be substantiated, and encourages stronger documentation and third-party certification | The guidance is directed at establishments and labeling claims, not every statement made at a stall |
Broad terms such as “natural,” “local,” “grass-fed,” “pasture-raised,” and “no antibiotics” do not prove a set of welfare conditions on their own. Look up what the term or certifier actually requires before you assume it covers the conditions you care about.
Certification programs: name the program and read its standard
USDA’s National Agricultural Library (NAL) notes that certification programs set standards and conduct periodic audits, and that standards, guidelines, and enrollment vary from one program to another. Its overview lists several programs. It is a listing, not an endorsement:

- Certified Humane
- Global Animal Partnership 5-Step program
- American Humane Certified
- Animal Welfare Approved, a program of A Greener World that audits, certifies, and supports independent family farmers raising animals outdoors on pasture or range, according to NAL
Ask which program applies to the specific product on the table, then check that program’s current standard for that species and its farm directory. A farm can use thoughtful practices without certification, and a certification logo does not tell you every detail you may care about. The certifier’s standard is the place to find those details.
Questions to ask the farmer
These questions are short and respectful, and you can adapt the wording:

- “When you say pasture-raised, free-range, or humane, what does that mean for this animal?”
- “How much time do they spend outdoors, and what kind of space or shelter do they have?”
- “Who checks that these practices are followed? Is the farm part of a certification program?”
- “Can you tell me which standard or certifier applies to this specific product?”
- “How are animals handled when they are sick, transported, and processed?”
Specific, checkable answers are more useful than general reassurance. If a vendor names a certifier, you can look up that standard. If the answers stay vague, that is information too.
How to compare two options
When you are choosing between two farms or products, put the same six questions to each one. This is an editorial framework to help you investigate the differences; it is not a USDA checklist:

- Which species and products does the claim cover?
- What are the housing conditions and outdoor access?
- How are health care and handling managed?
- Who verifies the claim, and how often?
- What published standard applies, and what is the current certification status?
- What is the price, and how practical is it to buy regularly?
What price differences do and do not show
Welfare-labeled products can cost more, but the best-documented federal figures are historical. The ERS study examined retail premiums and discounts for table-egg welfare claims over 2008 through 2018. In its chart of monthly market shares for that period, pasture-raised claims ranged from just under 1 percent, and no-added-antibiotics claims reached nearly 20 percent. These figures describe U.S. retail table eggs during 2008 through 2018. They are not a current market estimate, and they do not describe farmers-market prices or buyer behavior.
The sources reviewed here do not give a current premium for farmers-market animal products. Compare prices directly at the stall, and choose based on which claims matter most to you within your budget.

Market-day food safety
Food-safety handling and humane production are separate questions. FSIS guidance on farmers markets is about handling and transport, not animal welfare, and it advises the following:
Quick Recap

- Easy to Clean: Simply use a damp cloth or sanitizer wipe to clean, then allow to air-dry – Our reusable grocery bags are foldable like a notebook when not in use – conveniently stores under your car seat, trunk, or a kitchen drawer
- Buy raw meat and poultry only if the vendor is keeping it cold. FSIS puts it this way: “Only purchase raw meat and poultry at the farmers market if they’re being kept cold by the vendor.” (Meredith Carothers, Public Affairs Specialist, FSIS, USDA, August 6, 2024.)
- Shop for perishables last when possible.
- Bring an insulated bag or an insulated cooler bag with ice, frozen gel packs, or frozen beverages to keep perishables below 40°F during shopping and travel.
- Keep raw meat and poultry in a separate bag from ready-to-eat foods.
What these sources do not establish
- This guide does not name particular markets or vendors, and no current local directory was reviewed for it.
- No farmers-market-specific animal-welfare statistic is available from these federal sources.
- Certification programs change their names, standards, eligibility, and species coverage, so check each program’s current standards before making a specific comparison.
- The FSIS 2024 guidance covers meat and poultry labels, not every direct-to-consumer statement made at a market.
- The ERS egg figures are historical, covering 2008 through 2018.
