Gastroenteritis in cats means inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It is a description of what is happening in the gut, not a single disease, and vomiting and diarrhea are the signs that usually prompt a call to the veterinarian. Those two signs cannot tell you why the cat is ill. Identifying the cause is the veterinarian’s job, and treatment is built around what that investigation finds. The core of treatment is restoring fluid and electrolyte balance, with feeding and other medication decided by the vet.

What veterinarians mean by gastroenteritis

VCA Animal Hospitals describes gastroenteritis as a diagnosis of exclusion. The veterinarian considers and rules out more serious causes before settling on this general label. That is why a cat with vomiting and diarrhea may go through a workup before anyone names the problem, and why owners sometimes hear the term used as a working description rather than a final answer.

Possible causes

VCA lists infection, medications, and new foods among the common triggers. Veterinary references also describe a wider set of possibilities, so the differential is deliberately broad:

  • Infection, including bacterial, viral, or parasitic causes.
  • Parasites, which can be found on fecal testing in some cases.
  • Medications, which can irritate the gut directly.
  • New or rich foods, and dietary indiscretion, meaning eating garbage, spoiled food, or things outside the normal diet.
  • Toxins, including some household cleaning agents and plants or substances the cat has swallowed.
  • Swallowed objects or obstruction, such as string or other foreign material that can block or irritate the intestines.
  • Disease outside the digestive tract, where an illness in another organ produces gut signs.

Because these causes range from mild and self-limiting to serious and urgent, a sudden episode should never be assumed to be harmless simply because it looks like a stomach upset.

Symptoms to watch for

VCA’s overview describes the typical picture:

  • Intermittent vomiting and diarrhea
  • Abdominal tenderness, which the cat may show by flinching, hunching, or resisting being picked up
  • Lethargy or hiding
  • Decreased appetite
  • Sometimes a low-grade fever

Continued vomiting or diarrhea can lead to dehydration, so watch for dry gums, reduced skin elasticity, sunken eyes, and reluctance to drink. Cornell University’s feline guidance notes that diarrhea may be brief after an abrupt diet change or a stressful event. Persistent or recurring diarrhea, however, can signal more serious disease.

When to contact a veterinarian

Do not treat symptoms as a diagnosis. Use the following guidance, which is drawn from Cornell and VCA, to decide how quickly to act:

Situation What the source advises Source
Brief diarrhea after an abrupt diet change or stress, with an otherwise well-appearing cat Diarrhea may be brief in this setting; monitor closely Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
Diarrhea lasting longer than a day or two, with poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting Veterinary care as soon as possible Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine (clinical guidance, not a study statistic)
Frequent vomiting, or vomiting with lethargy, weakness, reduced appetite, blood, or diarrhea at the same time Prompt evaluation Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine
Severe or bloody diarrhea, or generalized illness Seek medical attention promptly VCA Animal Hospitals
Vomiting and diarrhea that do not improve significantly within 24 to 48 hours of treatment Contact the veterinarian VCA Animal Hospitals (publication year not stated)

Some cats need earlier contact than the table suggests. Kittens, older cats, cats with chronic illness, and cats that may have swallowed a toxin or foreign object should be assessed sooner, and the veterinarian is the right person to decide how urgent a particular case is.

How the veterinarian works out the cause

The investigation starts with the history and a physical examination. VCA highlights several questions that help narrow the list:

These are possibilities, not a standard panel every cat must have. Cornell describes blood and fecal tests as a common starting point, with imaging or further testing added in some cases.

Treatment: rehydration and electrolytes

VCA states: “The principal treatment of gastroenteritis consists of rehydration and restoring blood electrolyte balance (sodium, potassium, and chloride).” That sentence is the anchor for almost every treatment plan. How fluids are given depends on how dehydrated the cat is.

Fluid route What the source describes
By mouth (oral) Used as one option depending on dehydration; the source does not specify exact thresholds
Under the skin (subcutaneous) Used as one option depending on dehydration; the source does not specify exact thresholds
Into a vein (intravenous) Used as one option depending on dehydration; the source does not specify exact thresholds

Other treatment depends on what the diagnostic work shows. Your veterinarian may decide whether any additional medication is needed, and will tailor the plan to the individual cat.

Feeding during recovery

VCA’s article describes withholding food for 8 to 12 hours during initial treatment, then gradually reintroducing small, frequent portions of a highly digestible diet. This is an example of what that source reports, not a home instruction. The article itself says the veterinarian will advise the feeding plan, and the right timing and food depend on the cat’s condition, age, and cause.

Your veterinarian may recommend a veterinary gastrointestinal diet or another highly digestible cat food. The choice of diet and the pace of reintroduction should come from the vet, not from a product label or an online guide.

What not to do at home

  • Do not give antibiotics, anti-vomiting medicine, stomach protectants, or any other medication without veterinary direction.
  • Do not give human over-the-counter medication. Cornell warns that some of these can be harmful to cats.
  • Do not wait out vomiting or diarrhea that includes blood, severe diarrhea, or signs of generalized illness.

Keeping a simple log of vomiting and diarrhea episodes, food intake, and water intake gives the veterinarian useful information at the first visit.
