If you suspect your cat has chewed, swallowed, or touched a true lily (Lilium) or a daylily (Hemerocallis), treat it as an emergency. Call your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic right away, even if your cat seems completely normal. These plants can cause kidney failure in cats, and the window for the best outcome is short.
What to do right now
- Call a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately. Say “possible true lily or daylily exposure,” and tell them when it happened and how your cat came into contact with the plant (eating leaves or petals, licking pollen off its fur, or drinking vase water).
- If one is available, call an animal poison-control service for guidance specific to your cat. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center and Cornell’s guidance both point owners to a veterinarian or an animal poison-control center after suspected exposure. Hours, service areas, and fees vary, so confirm them before you call.
- Bring the plant or its label, or take a clear photo, but only if doing so will not delay transport or the call. Cornell advises collecting a sample or label when the plant is known.
- Do not induce vomiting unless a veterinarian specifically tells you to. Do not give human medications, supplements, or home “detox” products. Cornell’s Feline Health Center puts it directly in its “Common Cat Hazards” guidance: “IMPORTANT: DO NOT induce vomiting unless you are specifically directed to do so.”
Which lilies are dangerous to cats
The word “lily” covers several unrelated plants, and they do not carry the same risk. Identify the plant by its botanical name if you can, and never assume a plant is safe because its common name sounds harmless. If you cannot identify it, call a veterinarian and treat the exposure as possibly serious.
| Plant (common name) | Botanical name | Documented risk to cats | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| True lily, including Easter lily | Lilium | Highly toxic; can cause kidney failure | Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine; ASPCA; VCA Animal Hospitals |
| Daylily | Hemerocallis | Highly toxic; can cause kidney failure | Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine; VCA Animal Hospitals |
| Peace lily | Spathiphyllum | Does not cause the same kidney failure as true lilies; insoluble calcium oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth and throat | VCA Animal Hospitals |
| Calla lily | Zantedeschia | Does not cause the same kidney failure as true lilies; calcium oxalate crystals can irritate the mouth and throat | VCA Animal Hospitals |
| Peruvian lily | Alstroemeria | Expected to cause self-limiting stomach upset rather than kidney disease | VCA Animal Hospitals |
Oral irritation from peace or calla lilies is unpleasant, and your cat should still be checked, but it is not the kidney injury that makes true lilies and daylilies an emergency. Because the plants are easy to confuse in a garden or a bouquet, the safest assumption is that any unidentified lily is a true lily or daylily until a veterinarian says otherwise.
How a cat can be exposed
Exposure is not limited to a cat eating a flower. Cornell lists several routes that count:

- Drinking water from a vase that held lily stems
No source establishes a safe amount. Do not try to judge whether a small nibble or a few pollen grains are harmless.
Symptoms to watch for
Early signs
The ASPCA lists vomiting, loss of appetite, and lethargy as signs after Easter lily exposure in cats, along with kidney failure and possible death in serious cases. VCA describes early vomiting and reduced appetite as the first changes. These early signs can be mild or easy to dismiss, which is why owners should not wait for them to appear, or to get worse, before calling a veterinarian.

Signs of kidney injury
As kidney damage develops, VCA reports that a cat may progress from reduced appetite to complete loss of appetite, with lethargy, increased drinking and urination, and continued vomiting. Any of these changes after a possible exposure is a reason to seek care urgently. Do not use the absence of symptoms as reassurance, because a cat can look well during the period when treatment is most effective.
How quickly kidney damage can develop
VCA Animal Hospitals reports that true lilies and daylilies can cause kidney failure within 6 to 48 hours of exposure. This figure comes from VCA’s plant guide, and the page reviewed does not give a publication date, so treat it as general veterinary guidance rather than a figure from a recent study. The same source says the prognosis is good when treatment starts before kidney damage occurs. Treatment after damage has developed may still work with aggressive care, but the chance of survival is lower. The practical meaning is simple: the time to act is the moment you suspect exposure, not after symptoms begin.

What diagnosis and treatment involve
There is no single diagnostic protocol or treatment plan that applies to every cat. The sources reviewed here do not give standardized laboratory cutoffs or a fixed schedule for rechecks, and any such plan should come from your veterinarian after an examination.
VCA states that veterinary treatment may include:
- Initial decontamination, chosen by the veterinarian based on how and when the exposure happened
- Intravenous (IV) fluids
- Blood work to assess kidney function
- Symptomatic and supportive care
- Dialysis, which may be needed when kidney damage is severe
Which measures are appropriate depends on the individual cat and the veterinarian’s assessment. Bring every detail you have about the exposure to the appointment, including the plant’s name, the time you think exposure happened, and any vomiting, drinking, or changes in urination you have noticed since then.
