The review asks, “But is Big Dog’s really a healthy choice for your cat?” Its answer is cautious: the food is affordable and easy to serve, but the reviewer finds it weak on ingredients and on brand transparency.
Which Big Dog’s is being reviewed
Two unrelated companies use the Big Dog’s name in pet food, and searches often mix them up. The mousse line covered by Cats.com is described on that page as an Amazon-based brand. The review does not establish which company legally manufactures the mousse, so readers should not assume a manufacturer from the brand name alone.
Big Dog Pet Foods is a different company. Its official FAQs describe a range of mixed-protein raw diets for cats and dogs, and its guide on raw food for cats covers that raw line. Its statements about taurine and raw recipes describe those products only. They say nothing about the wet mousse foods in the Cats.com review, so do not use them to judge the mousse.
What the review covers
The Cats.com page reviews a variety pack of two mousse-style wet foods, marketed as Salmon Mousse and Tuna Mousse. The review was written by Amy Brown-Towry, identified on the page as a Certified NAVC Pet Nutritionist. Cats.com describes the foods as affordable and easy for cats to eat.

Prices in the review are time-limited. The page reports $20.49 for the salmon recipe at Amazon and a unit price of $0.30 per ounce in its recipe table. Both figures are as shown on the June 2026 review page; they may no longer match current listings.

Cats.com rates the product on six axes. These are the publisher’s own ratings on its scale, not a regulatory grade or a clinical assessment.

The pattern is clear: price is the strongest score, while ingredient quality and product variety are the weakest.
What the ingredient panels say
The review transcribes an ingredient list for each recipe. Both panels begin with water and list chicken meat by-products (breast, liver, heart) and chicken soup. Neither panel, as transcribed by Cats.com, lists the fish named on the package.

Why the fish names matter
A shopper who picks “salmon” or “tuna” expects fish to be the main animal protein. The review reports that the panels name chicken instead, which is the core reason for its low ingredient-quality score. Whether the labels on sale today match these transcriptions is a separate question. The review was published in June 2026, and the packaging you find may differ.
Guaranteed analysis
The review also transcribes the guaranteed analysis for each recipe. These figures are the product’s stated minimums and maximums, as reported by Cats.com.

Cats.com states that its nutrient charts are calculated automatically from the guaranteed analysis and may not represent typical nutrient values. Its estimated dry-matter and caloric-weight percentages are therefore the reviewer’s calculations, not manufacturer or laboratory measurements. The review does not give a measured taurine level for either mousse, even though taurine is listed in both panels.

Cats.com reports that it found no FDA recall notices naming Big Dog’s. That is the reviewer’s finding, and it does not rule out a recall under a different company or product name. The same review says the brand offers little public detail about its founders, manufacturing facilities, sourcing, quality assurance or third-party testing. Those gaps are part of why the transparency and recall scores sit in the middle of the scale.

Is it a healthy choice for your cat?
The review does not answer that question with a simple yes. Its reasoning points to a split decision that depends on what you need from a cat food.
- It may suit you if budget is the main constraint, your cat readily accepts smooth wet food, and you mainly need an easy, moist meal to supplement a diet you already trust.
- It may not suit you if you chose it for named fish protein, if your cat has a known sensitivity to chicken, or if you want a manufacturer you can verify through public information.
- Keep checking if your cat has a medical condition. Ask a veterinarian before changing diets, and confirm that the package carries a complete-and-balanced statement for your cat’s life stage.
How to check the current package
- Read the brand and manufacturer line on the label. If no company is named, treat that as a transparency gap, as Cats.com does.
- Compare the first three ingredients with the transcription in the table above. If fish is not in the panel, the product name overstates the recipe.
- Find the guaranteed analysis and the complete-and-balanced statement. Confirm the life stage it is formulated for.
- Search the manufacturer’s name on the FDA’s recall pages before buying, since a recall may be filed under the manufacturer rather than the brand.
- Check the price on the listing you will buy from. The $20.49 figure in the review is dated and may have changed.
Verdict
On the evidence Cats.com reports, Big Dog’s mousse is an affordable, easy-to-serve wet food with a weak ingredient case. The salmon and tuna names are not matched by the panels the review transcribed, the review’s guaranteed-analysis figures are its own transcriptions, and the manufacturer is not clearly identified. A 5.3 out of 10 score from one review is a reason to read the current label carefully before buying, not a verdict on every batch.
