Start weaning foster kittens with a thin, soft gruel at about four weeks old, then thicken it gradually toward wet kitten food. Keep bottle-feeding or supplemental nursing available until each kitten reliably eats enough on its own and keeps gaining weight. The starting age is a guide, not a deadline, so each kitten’s eating and weight set the pace.
When to start weaning
Most foster-care guidance places the start of weaning around four weeks of age, but the published ranges differ slightly. The table below shows what the main foster-care guides say. Read them as a starting window rather than a fixed birthday.
| Source | Age guidance | What it says to do |
|---|---|---|
| ASPCApro foster-care guide | Transitioning kittens aged 3–5 weeks | Offer gruel during this period and thicken it over time |
| Kitten Lady foster guidance | 4–5-week-old kittens are weaning | These kittens can eat slurry; kittens 5–6 weeks and older can generally eat wet kitten food |
| Alley Cat Allies four-week kitten guide | Weaning begins at four weeks | Increase the proportion of wet food as the kitten learns to eat |
Kittens that are small, sick, or not gaining weight may need to stay on milk longer, even if they are past four weeks. In that case, a veterinarian or the rescue coordinator should set the timeline.
Step-by-step transition
Weaning usually takes days to several weeks. Move through these steps only as fast as each kitten shows it is ready.

- Mix a soft gruel. Combine wet kitten food with water or kitten milk replacer (KMR) until it has a pudding-like consistency, according to ASPCApro. Use a kitten-formulated food.
- Offer a small amount in a shallow, accessible dish. Keep the portion small so that the gruel does not sit out for long. If a kitten is not interested, put a little on your finger or on its lips so it can taste the food.
- Thicken the mixture over time. Reduce the liquid a little at a time and move toward thicker wet food. Alley Cat Allies advises increasing the wet-food share as the kitten learns to eat.
- Keep supplemental feeding going. Continue nursing or bottle-feeding after each solid meal until the kitten eats reliably and gains weight. Kitten Lady recommends this.
- Keep fresh water available at all times. ASPCApro says transitioning kittens should always have fresh water.
No single meal count or feeding interval fits every kitten. The sources differ in their schedules because they address different care settings and ages. Follow your rescue’s protocol for how many meals to offer and how often to bottle-feed.

Interest in the bowl is not proof of a real meal. Check these signs for each kitten, not for the litter as a whole.

- The kitten’s weight is rising from one weigh-in to the next.
- The kitten is active, alert, and keeps its normal energy between meals.
Weigh kittens on a gram scale
Kitten Lady lists a gram scale among the basic supplies for 4–5-week-old kittens. Weigh each kitten at the same time of day, record the number, and compare it with the previous day. A steady rise is the clearest sign that the transition is working. A kitten that eats well but still loses weight is not ready to be weaned further.
Watch for kittens that only look like they are eating
Kitten Lady cautions that some kittens appear to eat while still nursing on the food, which can leave them underfed. If a kitten seems to be eating but its weight is flat or falling, assume it is not getting enough until the numbers show otherwise.

What to do if a weaning kitten loses weight
A kitten whose weight falls during weaning is too young for solid food or is not eating enough of it. Kitten Lady recommends scaling back to bottle-feeding and making the gruel thinner again. Resume the more frequent supplemental feeds, then try the transition again after the kitten gains weight. Contact the foster organization or a veterinarian for individual direction, especially if the loss continues for more than a day or two.
Kittens that chew bottle nipples
Once kittens have teeth, they may chew bottle nipples and tear off pieces. ASPCApro advises caregivers to watch bottle use closely during the transition. Replace damaged nipples and stop using any that have been chewed open.

Food handling and storage
Gruel spoils quickly at room temperature, so throw away any prepared gruel the kitten did not eat rather than saving it for the next meal. Fresh dishes help the kitten accept the food and keep the feeding area clean.
Canned kitten food that has not yet been made into gruel can be covered and refrigerated for up to 48 hours, according to ASPCApro. Make only what you expect to use within that window.

Emergency signs
Some signs mean a kitten needs emergency veterinary care rather than a feeding adjustment. Kitten Lady lists these:
- Gasping or inability to breathe
- Painful eye or skin infection
- Bleeding
- Limpness or lethargy
Call your veterinarian or rescue contact at once if a kitten shows any of them, and do not wait to see whether the kitten improves with a meal.
Supplies to have on hand
- Wet kitten food for the gruel and for later, thicker meals. Choose a kitten-formulated product.
- Kitten milk replacer for mixing gruel or for supplemental feeding when your rescue directs it.
- A shallow food dish that a small kitten can reach easily.
- A gram scale to track each kitten’s weight.
- Bottles and nipples for supplemental feeding, replaced when chewed.
Use your foster organization’s instructions to decide quantities and which products to buy. Brand choice matters less than whether the food is kitten-formulated and whether the kitten accepts it.
Whatever the schedule, the same three checks guide each decision: how thick the kitten can handle its food, whether it eats enough without help, and whether its weight keeps going up. Progress when all three are steady, and go back to more milk when they are not.

This guidance draws on the ASPCApro foster-care guide, Kitten Lady’s foster guidance for 4–5-week-old kittens and its guide for 5–6-week-old kittens, and Alley Cat Allies’ four-week kitten guide. These pages give practical foster-care advice, not clinical research, and their age ranges differ. Medical and feeding decisions for an individual kitten belong with the rescue’s veterinarian.
