Barking, chewing, or accidents while alone can come from many causes, so those behaviors alone do not confirm the diagnosis. The most reliable approach is to record your dog home alone, ask a veterinarian to rule out medical and other behavior causes, and then work on a gradual, reward-based plan. Medication is a decision for your veterinarian, not a first step you choose from a list.
What separation anxiety is, and what it is not
Separation anxiety describes a dog that becomes distressed when separated from an attached person. The distress is the defining feature. A dog that tears up a bed or barks at the mail carrier while you are out has a behavior problem, but that alone does not show that the dog is panicking about being apart from you. Confirming the pattern takes observation, covered below.
The behavior is not spite, revenge, or a failure of obedience. A dog in this state is responding to fear and stress, and punishing it tends to add to the distress rather than resolve it.
What may trigger it
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) states: “There is no conclusive evidence showing exactly why dogs develop separation anxiety.” The ASPCA notes that the loss of an important person or group may be involved, and it lists several situations associated with onset in its separation anxiety guidance:

- Abrupt changes to the daily schedule
- Moving to a new home
- A household member leaving
These are associations, not proof of a single cause. Many dogs go through one of these changes without developing distress, and some dogs develop it without an obvious trigger. Treat the list as a set of things to consider when you look at your dog’s history, not as a checklist that confirms a cause.

- Destructive behavior, especially near doors or other exits, or aimed at the owner’s belongings
- Distress vocalization, such as persistent barking, howling, or whining
- House soiling
- Salivation
- Pacing and restlessness
- Inability to settle
- Anorexia (not eating)
- Repetitive or compulsive behaviors
Merck says these signs typically occur within the first 15–30 minutes after departure, and may begin during the departure preparations, such as picking up keys or putting on shoes. Dr. Kelly Ballantyne, a veterinary behaviorist writing for the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB), notes that many affected dogs show signs within the first 10 minutes. Timing varies, so a dog that settles after a few minutes may still be distressed earlier than you would see from the doorway.
Exaggerated greetings on your return are also commonly described in dogs with this problem, but they are easy to misread. Use them as one clue alongside what happens while you are gone.

Confirm the pattern with video
Owners often do not know what happens after they leave. Ballantyne, writing for AVSAB in its 2021 article on telling whether a dog has separation anxiety, recommends video as the most effective and accurate way to tell. A camera to record your dog when home alone is an observation aid. It does not diagnose anything on its own, but it lets you see the sequence of events you cannot see from outside the house.
- Record ordinary absences, such as a regular trip to work or an errand, and at least one off-routine absence, such as a longer outing or a time when you leave at an unusual hour.
- Review the first 30–60 minutes of each recording, since the early period is where signs typically show up.
- Look for the order of events. Restlessness, panting, lip licking, and whining that come before barking, destruction, or house soiling point more clearly toward distress than the damage alone does.
- Note whether the dog settles, and how long that takes. A dog that cannot settle for long stretches is showing a different pattern from one that barks for a few minutes and then rests.
- Compare recordings across different absences. If the dog is calm when you leave for a short errand but distressed during a longer one, the trigger may be the length of time alone rather than the departure itself.
Rule out other causes first
Destruction and elimination when alone can have other explanations, and some of them need treatment that is not behavioral at all. Merck advises excluding the following before diagnosing separation-related distress:

- Incomplete housetraining
- Exploratory play and scavenging
- Reactions to environmental stimuli, such as noises or movement outside the window
- Noise aversion
- Confinement anxiety, where the dog is distressed by being confined rather than by being apart from a person
The ASPCA adds medical causes of house soiling, including incontinence and effects of medication, as well as excitement or submissive urination, marking, juvenile destruction, and boredom. Ask a veterinarian to examine your dog before treating new or unexplained elimination as a behavior problem. A dog that has been reliably housetrained and suddenly begins soiling indoors needs a medical check first.

Treatment aims to keep the dog below its panic threshold and gradually build tolerance through practice. The approach depends on how severe the distress is and how the dog responds.

| Situation | Approach | Limits and notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mild signs | Food counterconditioning and relaxation training, using food, chews, or a food-stuffable puzzle toy to build positive associations with being alone (Merck; ASPCA) | The ASPCA notes that highly anxious dogs may not eat when alone, so food-based work may not help a dog that is too distressed to eat. |
| Moderate or severe distress | An individualized graduated departure plan, often with professional involvement (Merck) | Merck says the protocol can take months. Progress is measured by the dog’s response, not by the calendar. |
| Crate use | Some dogs may tolerate a crate, which the ASPCA notes may help them | The ASPCA notes that a crate may worsen distress in other dogs. Stop and seek advice if confinement causes panting, salivation, frantic escape attempts, or persistent vocalization. |
| Medication | A veterinarian-guided adjunct to behavior work | Merck states that fluoxetine and clomipramine are FDA-approved in the United States for canine separation anxiety when used with a behavior modification plan. That is information about approval, not a recommendation for any individual dog. |
Mild cases: counterconditioning and relaxation
Merck describes relaxation training and counterconditioning with food, chews, or puzzle feeders to build positive associations with the owner’s departure. Begin with cues and objects the dog already likes, and keep sessions short and calm. A food-stuffable puzzle toy can be useful here, but it is a tool, not a plan. If the dog does not eat when alone, move to a more structured approach rather than repeating the same exercise.
Moderate and severe cases: a graduated departure plan
Merck describes a graduated departure plan in which the owner keeps departures short enough that the dog does not become distressed. The owner increases the length of the absence only while the dog remains calm, and uses video to check progress. Merck also describes placing a novel safety signal before the departure routine. Follow the sequence below, and ask a veterinary behaviorist or qualified trainer to adjust it if progress stalls.
- Record the dog’s baseline using the method in the video section above.
- Begin with departures so brief that the dog stays relaxed. Return before any signs appear.
- Introduce the novel safety signal shortly before you leave, then keep it consistent so the dog learns what it means.
- Lengthen departures in small steps. Move forward only when the dog remains calm at the current length.
- If signs return, shorten the absence and hold at the earlier level for longer.
- Continue recording periodically so that you can see changes that are hard to notice when you are present.
Reduce alone time during training
Merck and AVSAB advise minimizing alone time as far as feasible while training is under way. Sitters, daycare, or another person who can stay with the dog may help. These arrangements reduce how often the dog practices panic, which matters because repeated panic can make the problem harder to treat. Do not assume that a dog will simply get used to distress by being left alone for longer periods.
Reward-based training only
The AVSAB position statement on training methods reads: “Based on current scientific evidence, AVSAB recommends that only reward-based training methods are used for all dog training, including the treatment of behavior problems.” Punishing distress behavior, such as scolding a dog for barking at the door or for destroying something, does not address the fear underneath and can make the dog more anxious when you return. The AVSAB position statements page lists the current position.

- House soiling is new, or it appears in a dog that was reliably housetrained.
- Signs are severe, such as self-injury at exits, refusal to eat for an extended period, or persistent distress.
- Behavior work is not progressing despite consistent effort.
- Confinement causes the crate-related signs listed above.
A veterinarian can examine the dog, rule out medical causes, and decide whether medication belongs in the plan. A veterinary behaviorist can design a graduated departure protocol for the individual dog.
