Vetdiet is a Canadian-made range of cat foods, not a single recipe. Its adult chicken and rice formula is the clearest starting point: the manufacturer states it is formulated to AAFCO adult-maintenance nutrient levels, and its guaranteed analysis and calorie figures are published on the product page. Whether it is a good choice depends on which formula you are looking at, your cat’s life stage and body condition, and what you can check yourself. The evidence available is the manufacturer’s own label and product information, plus one retailer listing. It describes what is in the food and how much energy it provides. It does not show, by itself, how a cat will do on it over time.

What “Vetdiet” covers

Vetdiet sells several formulas under the same name, and they differ in life stage, protein and fat levels, and calorie density. Vetdiet’s frequently asked questions page says the brand offers Wellness and Care lines and does not offer prescription food. Any formula discussed below should be identified by its exact name and package, not by the brand alone.

Where it is made and where to buy it

The brand’s FAQ says its products are made in Canada to Vetdiet’s own specifications for nutrition, quality, and food safety. These are the company’s statements; the brand pages do not cite an independent audit. The same FAQ names Mondou and Ren’s Pets as online sellers. Mondou’s Vetdiet brand page confirms it carries the line. Current stock, pricing, and availability on Amazon were not confirmed, so check the seller’s listing before you buy.

Comparing the formulas

The table lists the label figures published for each formula. “Minimum” values are guarantees on the label, not exact measurements, and calorie figures are the manufacturer’s stated values. Where a page does not state a value, the cell says so.

Indoor adult, chicken (retailer listing) 30% 12% Not stated 3,350 kcal/kg 352 kcal/cup Indoor adult cats, as described by Mondou; check the package for the manufacturer’s statement

Adult chicken and rice as the baseline

The adult chicken and rice product page lists deboned chicken and chicken meal among the first ingredients, with minimum protein of 32%, minimum fat of 19%, and 3,700 kcal/kg (444 kcal/cup). It is the reference point for the rest of the range. Ingredient order tells you what is heaviest in the recipe before cooking. It does not tell you how well a cat digests the food or whether it suits a particular cat.

Senior chicken and rice

The senior page has its own label and calorie profile, but its nutritional-adequacy statement is the same adult-maintenance statement used on the adult pages. A senior-labelled product is therefore not described by the manufacturer as meeting a separate senior nutrient profile. Vetdiet’s FAQ describes senior cats as 7 to 10 years old. Whether a specific older cat needs this formula is a question for your veterinarian, based on that cat’s health and weight.

Purina Pro Plan Vet Diets DM Dietetic Management Dry Cat Food, 10 lb Bag
  • Low carbohydrate and high protein cat food to help support healthy glucose levels in cats
  • St/Ox Defense: This Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets diet promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals
  • Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets dry cat food featuring high protein content to help maintain lean body mass and ideal body condition
  • Great tasting cat food nutrition that’s rich in antioxidants
  • Cat kibble formula available in dry and canned (loaf and Savory Selects) to meet your cat's preference

Adult active, salmon, pea, and sweet potato

This formula has the highest stated protein (40% minimum) and fat (20% minimum) in the table, and its 578 kcal per cup is about 30% higher than the adult chicken and rice recipe’s 444. A higher energy density means a smaller measured cup covers the same calories. It also means the same cup overfeeds a less active cat more quickly. The label does not show that a cat needs an “active” recipe, and nothing in the manufacturer’s pages establishes that it performs better for active cats.

Indoor adult versus adult: what the listing shows

The only indoor-specific formula in the material reviewed is the chicken dry food listed by Mondou. It carries minimum protein of 30%, minimum fat of 12%, and 352 kcal per cup. Its per-kilogram energy figure (3,350 kcal/kg) matches the senior recipe, but its per-cup figure does not. The senior page lists 402 kcal per cup for the same 3,350 kcal/kg. Cup weight differs between products, so the same per-kilogram energy can produce different per-cup numbers. If you are comparing formulas, use kcal/kg from the label and convert your cat’s ration yourself, or ask the manufacturer for the cup weight.

Purina Pro Plan Vet Diets DM Dietetic Management Dry Cat Food, 6 lb Bag

The label values are the only verifiable differences between the indoor listing and the adult chicken and rice recipe. The sources reviewed do not describe a specific indoor-related nutritional mechanism, so you should not assume the indoor formula does more for an indoor cat than the label states.

What the calorie numbers mean for weight

Weight control versus adult chicken and rice

The weight-control recipe provides 372 kcal per cup and 3,100 kcal/kg, which is about 16% less energy than the adult chicken and rice recipe (444 kcal per cup and 3,700 kcal/kg). Its minimum fat is 9% against 19%, and its maximum fiber is 5%. The product page says feeding should be based on the ideal body weight your veterinarian recommends, not on a standard cup count. Vetdiet’s FAQ advises consulting a veterinarian before starting any weight-loss plan.

  • Hill's Prescription Diet m/d GlucoSupport Chicken Flavor Dry Cat Food is specially formulated by Hill’s nutritionists and veterinarians to support your cat’s glucose and weight management
  • Clinical nutrition optimized to help cats lose weight and manage blood sugar
  • Supports the unique nutritional needs of diabetic cats through high protein and optimal carbohydrates help manage blood sugar
  • Enriched with arginine, an essential amino acid
  • Clinically proven antioxidants support a healthy immune system

The lower calorie density is a label fact. Whether your cat loses weight on this food depends on how much you feed, how active the cat is, and whether a veterinarian has set a target. The label cannot make that decision for you.

What the claims do and do not show

The AAFCO adequacy statement

The adult chicken and rice page says the food “is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for the maintenance of adult cats.” This is a formulation statement: the recipe is designed to meet published nutrient levels. On its own, it does not describe a feeding trial or a result in cats eating the food.

  • High protein and low carbohydrate to help support healthy glucose levels in cats
  • St/Ox Defense: This diet promotes a urinary environment unfavorable to the development of both struvite and calcium oxalate crystals

  • Available in dry and canned (loaf and Savory Selects) to meet your cat's preference

The word “natural”

The FAQ quotes AAFCO’s definition of “natural” and acknowledges that the definition is broad and open to interpretation. It then describes the brand’s own standards. Treat “natural” as a marketing term, not a measure of quality or superiority.

Digestibility and nutrient analysis

The FAQ says Vetdiet can provide nutrient analysis and digestibility values for its formulas. The full analyses and numerical digestibility values were not available in the material reviewed, so ask the company for them before drawing conclusions about how well a formula is absorbed.

Health and outcome claims

The sources reviewed contain manufacturer descriptions and label data only. They contain no independent comparative trials or clinical outcome data for these formulas, and no named, dated population statistics. A product’s ingredient list or formulation statement does not show that it prevents or treats any disease, and Vetdiet’s pages do not claim otherwise in the material reviewed.

How to switch your cat to Vetdiet

The FAQ recommends a gradual transition. Use the following steps as the manufacturer describes them, and adjust the pace with your veterinarian if your cat has a medical condition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Mix 75% of the current food with 25% Vetdiet. Feed this mixture for the first few days.
  2. Increase the proportion of Vetdiet over the next 7 to 10 days until the transition is complete. One example schedule across 10 days is 75/25 for days 1 to 3, 50/50 for days 4 to 6, 25/75 for days 7 to 9, and 100% Vetdiet on day 10.
  3. Measure portions by your cat’s ideal or target body weight, as the FAQ advises, rather than by the old food’s feeding chart.
  4. Watch appetite, stool quality, and weight during the switch. If your cat refuses the food or develops vomiting or diarrhea, slow the transition down and contact your veterinarian.

When to check with a veterinarian first

  • Kittens: The FAQ identifies 12 months as an appropriate time to move to adult maintenance. Before that, check with your veterinarian about kitten-appropriate feeding.
  • Senior cats: Older cats, which the FAQ describes as 7 to 10 years old, may need a different plan based on their health.
  • Weight goals: Any weight-loss or weight-gain plan should be set by a veterinarian. Vetdiet’s FAQ says the same.
  • Diagnosed conditions: Vetdiet does not offer prescription food, so a diet your veterinarian prescribes for a medical condition is a separate choice from the formulas above.

Who the range suits

Vetdiet makes sense for owners who want a Canadian-made, clearly labelled range with published guaranteed analysis, calorie figures, and an adult-maintenance statement for each product. It is most straightforward for healthy adult cats eating the adult chicken and rice recipe, and for cats whose veterinarian has set a calorie target that matches the weight-control recipe’s label. Owners who want independent clinical evidence for a specific health benefit will not find it in the material reviewed, and should not expect it from a label.
