The application cycle for the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) Board of Directors for 2026–2027 is closed. As of October 7, 2026, AAHA’s position vacancy notice lists no open positions, so there is no current application to submit. This guide covers the eligibility rules, the materials AAHA requested in the last published cycle, how candidates are reviewed, the Board’s structure and term limits, and what to prepare before the next opening.
Current status of the application cycle
Treat the 2026–2027 cycle as closed. AAHA’s application page states that applications for that cycle have closed, and the vacancy notice lists no vacancies. Watch the AAHA application page and the Board of Directors notice of position vacancies for any new cycle. The dates in this article describe the completed 2026–2027 cycle and are not a calendar for a future application.
Who qualifies
Director eligibility
AAHA’s published rule is that each Director must:
- Have been an Accredited Practice Team Member for at least three years immediately before election.
- Maintain Accredited Practice Team Member status for the full Board term.
- Be committed to AAHA’s mission and objectives.
The AAHA bylaws also say the Board should reflect a range of skills and diversity, including diversity of thought, background, geography, and practice type.

Officer roles carry separate requirements
Officer posts add conditions on top of the Director rule. Do not treat them as Director qualifications.
| Position | Requirement beyond the Director rule | Where it is stated |
|---|---|---|
| Director | Three years as an Accredited Practice Team Member immediately before election, maintained during the term | Application page and bylaws |
| Vice President | Must be a licensed veterinarian and meet the Accredited Practice Team Member tenure requirement stated on the application page | Application page |
| President-Elect | Must have served on the Board for at least one year before assuming the office | Bylaws |
Application materials in the last published cycle
For the 2026–2027 cycle, AAHA asked candidates to submit:
Rank #2
- A résumé of one to two pages highlighting professional experience, skills, and accomplishments.
- A cover letter explaining interest in serving on the AAHA Board.
- A completed AAHA Self-Competency Assessment, uploaded with the application.
Plan for the assessment as a required upload rather than an optional extra. The application page does not describe its format in detail, so confirm with AAHA how it will be administered in any future cycle.

How candidates are reviewed and chosen
AAHA says its Leadership Identification and Nominating Committee (LINC) runs the candidate review. Its role, as described on the LINC page, follows this sequence:
- LINC identifies qualified candidates.
- LINC reviews application packages.
- LINC selects interviewees and conducts the interviews.
- LINC makes recommendations to the Board and the CEO.
- Candidates receive selection notices, and the Board takes its motions on the recommended slate.
The LINC page also describes logistics from 2025. Those details belong to that year and should not be assumed for a later cycle unless AAHA republishes them.

Nomination and election under the bylaws
The bylaws describe a separate formal path that runs alongside the application process. It includes a LINC slate, additional nominations supported by signatures from at least one percent of voting members, and a member vote when more than one nominee stands for a position. Application steps and bylaw nomination steps are distinct, so ask AAHA how each applies to a specific opening.

Quick Recap
Best Value
- The Board has seven to ten directors, including officers, the Immediate Past President, and between two and five additional Directors.
- The CEO is an ex officio member without a vote.
- No more than three Directors may be non-veterinarians.
- A Director who does not also hold a Board officer role may serve up to three terms: one year for the first, two for the second, and three for the third, for a maximum of six years in total. Bylaw provisions on vacancies and officer roles can change how this applies.
- The 2026–2027 Director term runs from September 17, 2026 through September 16, 2027.
Preparing for a future cycle
- Confirm eligibility by counting your continuous years as an Accredited Practice Team Member, and check that your status will hold for the whole term.
- Draft a one- to two-page résumé and a cover letter that address Board service specifically.
- Allow time to complete the AAHA Self-Competency Assessment before you need to upload it.
- Monitor the application page and vacancy notice so you do not miss an opening.
- Contact AAHA to confirm the current cycle dates, materials, and whether a position is available.
