You can help animals at any time of year, and you do not need to adopt a pet or spend money to do it. Five practical routes cover most readers: adopt, foster, donate what a shelter actually needs, volunteer, and advocate for animal-protective policy. The right starting point depends on your home, your schedule, and where you live, so begin with the option you can sustain.
Start with where you live
The ASPCA’s own adoption, foster, and program locations are limited. Its January 6, 2026 article on helping animals lists its adoption locations as New York City, Los Angeles, Asheville, North Carolina, and Columbus, Ohio. If you live elsewhere, the same guidance points you to a local shelter or rescue. Program details, eligibility, and openings differ from one organization to the next, so confirm them directly before you commit.
1. Adopt
Adoption gives one animal a home and frees shelter space so another animal can receive care, according to the ASPCA. It is also the option with the longest commitment. Before you adopt, make sure your home, budget, and daily routine can support an animal for its whole life. In ASPCA locations, adoption is handled through its own programs; elsewhere, start with a local shelter.
2. Foster
Fostering lets an animal leave the shelter environment and experience a home while it waits for a permanent adopter. The ASPCA lists its foster areas as New York City or the tri-state area, Los Angeles, Asheville, and Columbus. Outside those areas, ask a local shelter or rescue whether it runs a foster program. Fostering is a good middle path if you want to help an animal but are not ready to adopt.

3. Donate what is needed
Shelter needs are specific and change with the season. The ASPCA gives towels, blankets, toys, and unopened pet food as examples, but says to call the shelter ahead or check its social media first, because demand differs by organization and time of year. Dropping off unrequested items can create storage problems rather than help.
Money is the other route. You can give directly, organize a community fundraiser, or ask friends and family to make a donation in place of a gift for your birthday or another occasion. Cash lets an organization buy exactly what it currently needs.

4. Volunteer
Volunteer roles include shelter care, dog walking, disaster response, and advocacy work. The ASPCA states that most shelters have volunteer programs for needs such as daily care or walks. Screening, training, minimum ages, and available shifts vary, so ask the shelter or rescue what it requires before you sign up. Volunteering is often the lowest-cost way to begin, though it does take regular time.
5. Advocate
Advocacy means using your voice on policy. The ASPCA points to its Advocacy Brigade, state action alerts, and support for federal bills. Bill status changes quickly, so use an official action page from the organization or the relevant legislature, and check that the bill is still live on the day you act. Advocacy takes only a few minutes, but its results depend on decisions made outside your control.

Smaller actions at home
If you cannot take on any of the five routes above, Humane World for Animals suggests several changes to everyday habits:
- Choose cruelty-free cosmetics and household products.
- Add a plant-based meal to your week.
- Plant a native flower and reduce pesticide use.
- Address window-strike risks with decals or other treatments.
- Secure trash so wildlife cannot get into it.
- Join a habitat restoration effort.
American Humane Society adds planting native species, limiting outdoor lighting, and creating small backyard habitats. These are practical suggestions from the organizations, not guarantees that any one step will produce a measurable conservation result. Humane World’s guidance captures the spirit of the approach: “You don’t have to make a huge lifestyle change to help animals.”

Prepare an emergency plan for your animals
Disasters separate many animals from their owners, so preparation is one of the most concrete ways to protect pets. American Humane Society recommends an animal emergency kit containing food, water, medication, identification, important documents, a leash or carrier, and comfort items. Humane World for Animals also recommends writing an emergency plan alongside the kit. You can assemble the kit from supplies you already own; a prepackaged product is not necessary.

Travel is one place where a choice can directly affect animal welfare. Humane World for Animals advises researching animal attractions before you visit and avoiding any activity that involves holding, petting, or riding wild animals. Choosing not to take part in these activities is a concrete way to reduce demand for them.

Can one person really make a difference?
Individual actions add up through organizations. The ASPCA’s “You can help save animals today” page reports more than 567,700 animals assisted in 2022. That is an organization-reported total, not a measure of what any single donation, volunteer shift, or adoption caused. It shows the scale that shelters and rescues reach when people give time, money, and homes, and it is the reason the five routes above matter together.
Comparing the five routes
| Action | Time commitment | Financial cost | Needs a home for an animal | Local availability | Animals it most directly helps |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Adopt | Lifelong care | Adoption costs vary by organization; not stated in ASPCA guidance | Yes | ASPCA locations in New York City, Los Angeles, Asheville, and Columbus; elsewhere through local shelters | Companion animals |
| Foster | Temporary, length set by the organization | Varies; not stated in ASPCA guidance | Yes, temporarily | ASPCA foster areas in New York City or the tri-state area, Los Angeles, Asheville, and Columbus; elsewhere through local shelters or rescues | Companion animals awaiting adoption |
| Donate needed items or funds | Low, one-time or recurring | Set by you | No | Depends on local need; confirm with the shelter first | Animals in the organization’s care |
| Volunteer | Regular shifts; not stated in ASPCA guidance | Usually none | No | Most shelters have volunteer programs, per ASPCA | Animals in shelter care and disaster response |
| Advocate | Minutes per action | None | No | State action alerts and federal bills; check current status | Depends on the policy at stake |
The table compares practical features, not impact. The cited guidance does not measure a common outcome across these actions, so choose the route that you can keep doing.
