Caru’s Classics line is a set of grain-free wet cat stews that the company documents in unusual detail: ingredient lists, guaranteed-analysis values, calories per pack, feeding amounts and storage rules are all published on its product pages. What the available evidence does not provide is independent proof of those claims. Caru’s labels can be checked against the package and the company’s own statements, but no independent laboratory analysis, feeding trial or palatability study of the current recipes was found. Treat Caru as a brand with transparent manufacturer-published information that is worth comparing against your cat’s needs, not as a product with independently verified quality.
What Caru says about its cat stews
Caru’s current Classics pages describe a set of named wet cat stews and state that they are formulated to meet the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. That is a manufacturer statement. It describes how the recipe was designed, not a test result on a specific cat or batch. Caru’s FAQ adds that its recipes are developed with an animal nutritionist and a veterinary nutritionist, that its feline formulas are complete and balanced for all life stages, and that its Classics stews are made with human-grade ingredients and prepared and handled under human-food regulations. The FAQ also describes the company’s manufacturing and ingredient sourcing. None of these points has been independently audited in the material reviewed, so they should be read as Caru’s position.
Two recipes, two different labels
Caru’s Classics stews are not interchangeable. The two recipes reviewed here, Chicken & Wild Cod and Chicken & Crab, share the same guaranteed minimums for protein and fat but differ in fatty-acid values, calories and ingredient composition. Do not carry a number or ingredient claim from one flavor over to the other.
| Label item (as published by Caru) | Chicken & Wild Cod | Chicken & Crab |
|---|---|---|
| First animal proteins listed | Chicken, then cod | Chicken, chicken bone broth and crab among the first ingredients |
| Crude protein (minimum) | 9.0% | 9.0% |
| Crude fat (minimum) | 2.0% | 2.0% |
| Crude fiber (maximum) | 1.0% | 1.0% |
| Moisture (maximum) | 82.0% | 82.0% |
| Taurine (minimum) | 0.08% | 0.08% |
| Omega-6 (minimum) | 0.25% | 0.40% |
| Omega-3 (minimum) | 0.06% | 0.08% |
| Calories (kcal/kg) | 850 kcal/kg (stated on the Cod page) | Not stated on the Crab page reviewed |
| Calories per pack | 133 kcal | 125 kcal |
| Life-stage statement | Covered by Caru’s statement that Classics stews are formulated to meet AAFCO for all life stages | Stated directly on the Crab page as formulated to meet AAFCO for all life stages |
All values above are Caru’s published label figures. They describe the product as labeled, not measured performance. The Cod recipe’s 133 kcal per pack and 850 kcal/kg imply a pack of roughly 156 g, a figure calculated from those two label values rather than stated by Caru. The Crab page’s calorie-per-kilogram figure was not stated in the material reviewed, so a per-gram comparison between the two recipes cannot be made.

Chicken & Wild Cod: ingredients and what they signal
Caru describes this recipe as a grain-free stew with USDA-inspected chicken as the first ingredient. The full ingredient list, in the order Caru publishes it, is:
- Chicken
- Cod
- Fish broth
- Water sufficient for processing
- Tapioca starch
- Natural flavor
- Apples, carrots, sweet potato, golden flaxseed and celery root
- Minerals, taurine, vitamins and choline chloride
- Potassium chloride
- Marine microalgae oil, listed as the omega-3 source
Two points deserve a closer read. First, the recipe includes added taurine and vitamins and minerals, which indicates the company is supplementing nutrients rather than relying only on the meat. Second, the omega-3 and omega-6 values are listed as minimums, and Caru’s page notes that the added omega values are not recognized as essential nutrients by the AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles. Having a nutrient on the label is not the same as the nutrient being essential, and the page does not claim otherwise.

Chicken & Crab: where it differs
The Crab recipe puts chicken, chicken bone broth and crab among its first ingredients, and its label carries a higher minimum omega-6 (0.40% against 0.25%) and a slightly higher minimum omega-3 (0.08% against 0.06%). Its calorie count per pack, 125 kcal, is lower than the Cod recipe’s 133 kcal. These are the differences that matter when choosing between the two. The full Crab ingredient list should be read on the product page, since the points above are the only ingredient details checked for this review.

- Estimate the daily amount for an adult cat. Caru states that adults should receive one pack per 6–8 pounds of body weight. Kittens, according to the same page, may receive up to 2½ times that amount. Caru also says to adjust to the cat’s individual needs, so use these figures as a starting point.
- Transition over about seven days. Caru’s FAQ suggests beginning with 25% new food and increasing in stages across roughly a week. If digestive upset appears, slow the transition rather than pushing ahead.
- Keep water available. The Cod page directs owners to provide fresh water alongside the food.
- Refrigerate any unused portion after opening. Caru says to refrigerate the remainder and serve the contents within seven days of opening.
Caru’s transition and feeding guidance is manufacturer advice, not veterinary advice for a particular cat. A cat with a medical condition, a young kitten, or one that refuses a new food should be assessed by a veterinarian before the feeding plan is changed.
What the ingredient list and label can and cannot tell you
Cornell University’s Feline Health Center states that cats are obligate carnivores and rely on nutrients found only in animal products, and it advises owners to consider ingredient lists when choosing food. That is general context about cat nutrition. It does not evaluate Caru, and it does not mean that a meat-first ingredient list establishes overall quality or suitability. Caru’s recipes place animal proteins first, which fits that general guidance, but the label alone does not show how a particular cat will respond.

What is verified and what is not
- Documented by Caru: ingredient lists, guaranteed-analysis minimums and maximums, calories per pack, feeding amounts, transition steps, storage rules, and statements about formulation and sourcing.
- Not independently verified in the material reviewed: that the current formulas match the published labels, that Classics stews are human-grade under an external audit, and that the recipes meet AAFCO requirements beyond the company’s statement.
- Not established: palatability with cats, digestibility, the effect of the omega values on any individual cat, and how the recipes perform in feeding trials.
- Retail details: stock, listing accuracy, package size and price at retailers were not checked. Confirm the current label on Caru’s own product page before buying.
Limits of the independent evidence
An independent review of Caru appears on Cats.com. It is older than Caru’s current product pages, so its description of formulas may not match what is sold now, and the material reviewed did not establish whether that review tested the current recipes. Its brief author-credential context is useful for weighing the review, but it does not substitute for laboratory analysis or a feeding trial. No such trial or independent lab analysis of Caru’s current stews was found, and no consumer survey on palatability was located.
A label-reading checklist before you buy
- Confirm that the flavor you are buying is the one whose label you read; the Cod and Crab figures differ.
- Check that the guaranteed analysis and calorie figures on the package match the product page.
- Compare calories per pack with what your cat’s veterinarian recommends for daily intake.
- Check the omega values if your cat’s veterinarian has asked you to watch fatty-acid intake.
- Plan the seven-day transition and keep fresh water available.
- Refrigerate opened packs and use within seven days.
Caru’s Classics Chicken & Wild Cod Stew for Cats is the recipe most of the detail here covers, and it is the easiest of the two to evaluate from published information alone because its full ingredient list and guaranteed analysis were both reviewed.

The Bottom Line
Caru’s Classics wet cat stews are a transparent, manufacturer-documented option: they name their animal proteins, publish guaranteed minimums and calories, and give clear feeding and storage rules. The evidence for quality rests on Caru’s own statements and label figures. There is no independent testing, feeding trial or current retailer check in the material reviewed, so judge the product on its published label and confirm the details with your veterinarian before switching your cat’s food.
