Alyson Sheldrake’s The Rainbow Bridge is a fantasy novel about grieving a pet and the bond between people and the animals they love. Sally Rosenthal’s review for Best Friends Animal Society recommends it chiefly to readers who are coping with the loss of an animal companion. The book shares its main title with several unrelated works, so the author’s name is the reliable way to identify this one.

What happens in the story
The novel opens with Laura Adams, a young artist mourning her golden retriever, Molly. While she paints Molly, Laura feels compelled to add a white butterfly. Following that butterfly carries her to a meadow, where Molly greets her. The review describes a conflict between good and evil that runs beyond this opening, but it deliberately withholds later events, so this article does the same.
Why the reviewer recommends it
Rosenthal frames the novel around the relationship between people and their animals. She writes that it may help readers coping with the loss of a pet, and she praises the author’s compassion toward both the human and the animal characters. That is the reviewer’s judgment. It is not a clinical finding, and the review does not claim that reading the book will ease grief for any particular person.

What this assessment can and cannot tell you
- It establishes the edition, the opening premise, and the reviewer’s recommendation for readers dealing with pet loss.
- It does not evaluate the novel’s prose, pacing, or resolution, and it does not provide plot spoilers.
- It is a single review, not an independent evaluation of emotional or therapeutic benefit.
For a reader who has recently lost a pet and wants a story that treats that loss tenderly, the premise and the reviewer’s comments make this a reasonable book to consider. Readers who want a more detailed critical verdict should look for additional reviews.
