The ASPCA’s guidance for the week, published September 13, 2021, names three things an individual can do: support policy reform for farm animals, press companies to live up to their animal-welfare claims, and change what you buy and eat. The 2026 observance has already passed, but each of these steps works at any time of year.
What the numbers behind the week show
The ASPCA article uses three figures to frame why farm animal welfare matters. Each is attributed to the ASPCA’s 2021 publication, and the article does not name the original data publisher for either animal count.
- About 95% of U.S. land animals raised for food are reared in factory farms (ASPCA, September 2021).
- Almost 10 billion animals are raised in the United States for food each year (ASPCA, September 2021).
- In its 2021 criticism of Costco, the ASPCA said more than 200 companies had committed to animal-welfare standards that the retailer had not adopted. This is a 2021 count, not a current one.
Treat these as the ASPCA’s published claims rather than independently verified totals.
1. Support policy advocacy for farm animals
The ASPCA asks readers to watch and share its Farm System Reform Act video and to contact their U.S. representative and senators. As the article described the bill in 2021, it had recently been introduced in Congress and would phase out large factory farms, support farmers transitioning to more humane systems, and hold factory farms accountable for harms to local communities and unfair treatment of farmers.

Use the following steps to act on that request:
- Watch the ASPCA’s Farm System Reform Act video and share it with people who would want to know about the issue.
- Find your U.S. representative and two U.S. senators through the official House and Senate member directories, entering your ZIP code.
- Write a short, specific message. Name the bill, state whether you support it, and ask the office to tell you its position.
- Send it by the office’s contact form or by phone, and record the date you contacted them and any reply.
Before you cite the bill in your message, check its status in official congressional records. The ASPCA’s description is from 2021.
2. Take action on corporate animal-welfare claims
The ASPCA challenged Costco’s animal-welfare claims and asked readers to seek a law-enforcement investigation. The article said video footage showed chickens suffering at a supplier. It quoted Costco as stating that it is “committed to maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare,” and then disputed that the company’s performance matched that statement.

These are the ASPCA’s allegations as published in September 2021. They are not a current investigation or an independently confirmed finding, and this article has not established what Costco or any authority has done since. If you want to act on a corporate claim, a careful approach looks like this:
- Save the claim itself, with the date and the exact web address or packaging where you found it.
- Note which standard the company says it meets, and whether it names an independent auditor.
- Write to the company’s customer service and keep a copy of the message and any reply.
- If you have footage or documents of suspected cruelty, give them to local law enforcement or the agency that handles animal cruelty complaints where the operation is located, with the date and place of recording.
3. Change what you buy and eat
The ASPCA recommends a one-week Factory Farm Detox, which means eliminating factory-farmed foods from your diet for the week. Its program offers tips for reading labels and replacing those foods with higher-welfare options. The article does not require any particular brand or product, and a week-long trial is a practical test before you decide which changes to keep.

- List the animal products you buy in a typical week, such as eggs, chicken, pork, beef, and dairy.
- For each item, check the package label and identify who certifies the welfare claim and what that certifier verifies.
- Choose higher-welfare versions of the items on your list, or substitute plant-based meals for some of them.
- At the end of the week, note what you bought, what it cost, and which swaps you want to keep.
The ASPCA says food labels can be confusing. Its article does not rank labels, so use these questions to judge any claim on its own terms:
- Who verifies the claim, and is that verification done by an independent body?
- Does the claim cover how the animals are housed, or only what they are fed?
- Does the label describe a specific, checkable practice, or only a general impression?
What this guide does not establish
The ASPCA’s September 13, 2021 article is the basis for the three actions above, and it leaves several questions open:

The three actions themselves, contacting elected officials, documenting corporate claims, and changing your purchases, remain available regardless of how those questions are answered.
