The PETKIT PuraMax 2 (model P9902) is a self-cleaning automatic litter box with a rotating chamber, app connectivity and a sealed waste bin. In one independent multi-week test, daily scooping and the leakproof liner performed well, while emptying the chamber and deep cleaning were the tedious parts. Whether it works in your home depends less on the feature list than on your cat’s size and age, your floor, and the litter you choose.
Who the PuraMax 2 suits
PETKIT sets clear limits before any feature matters. Check these first:
- Age: PETKIT specifies cats older than six months. Its user manual says kittens under that age should not use the unit.
- Weight: PETKIT advises against use by cats below 1.5 kg (3.3 lb). Its product page gives a maximum of 10 kg (22 lb).
- Floor: Weight measurement requires a hard, level surface. Carpet, rugs and mats are not suitable. In the Cats.com test, auto-scooping was turned off while the unit sat on carpet because it affected weight sensing.
- Clearance: PETKIT says the unit needs at least 5 cm (about 2 in) from walls and an unobstructed entrance.
Cats outside the weight range are not a borderline case to test. Owners of larger cats should treat the upper limit as a real constraint, as the anecdotes in the independent review section show.
Specifications at a glance
The table separates PETKIT’s own figures from the independent observations. Dates matter here, because several figures come from a 2025 overview or an undated product page.

Litter: matching the included sifter
The PuraMax 2 ships with two sifter options, and each is designed for a different particle size. PETKIT advises against litter pieces longer than 12 mm. Most clumping litters are described as suitable, but suitable does not mean every formula performs the same.
P99022: larger particles
This sifter suits larger particles such as tofu litter or mixed litter.
P99023: fine particles
This sifter suits finer bentonite or mineral and clay litters.
PETKIT recommends fast, tight-clumping litter and says Waste Covering Mode can reduce smearing of waste on the walls. Treat that as company advice rather than a guaranteed result. Cats.com reports that crystal litter is not supported by the unit, so do not use it in the expectation that the sifter will handle it.

Daily use, waste capacity and emptying
The 7 L waste bin and the up-to-15-day interval are the figures most likely to shape your routine, and they come from PETKIT’s own lab results for a single cat. Under those conditions the interval is a planning guide, not a promise. A household with more cats, or a warm, humid home, should expect to empty the bin sooner.
In the Cats.com review, the daily work was light. Katelynn Sobus, a pet journalist who tested the unit for several weeks while caring for seven senior cats, found routine scooping satisfactory for the cats that used it and reported that the leakproof liner held up. She did not describe a problem with everyday odor or mess, but she did not report on long-term odor control.
The workload shifts at emptying. Sobus found that the magnetic litter remover took a long time and left litter behind in the chamber, so she finished the job with a vacuum. This is the trade-off to weigh: the unit removes the daily scooping, but the periodic emptying and deep clean still take real effort.

PETKIT’s guidance for routine cleaning is straightforward:
- Remove the detachable components and wash them.
- Wipe the main base. Do not rinse it.
- Let every part dry fully before reassembling the unit.
Expect to repeat the cleaning step more often than the emptying interval alone suggests if the chamber collects litter that the remover misses. Keep spare sifters and waste bags on hand, and confirm the exact part numbers and fit for your unit before ordering replacements.

App connectivity and offline behavior
The app tracks usage and weight changes and can alert owners to possible abnormalities. These are monitoring features. They do not diagnose a health problem, and an alert should prompt a check with a veterinarian rather than a conclusion.

“Yes, even without a network connection, PURAMAX 2 will operate according to your preset settings. However, the PETKIT app will not update litter box usage data when the network is lost.”
In practice, the box keeps running on its preset settings during an outage, but usage history and app data will have gaps for that period.

PETKIT describes 11 safety sensors, including proximity and weight sensing, and a rotating position designed to leave the entrance open. These are design claims from the manufacturer. They do not guarantee zero risk, so supervise a cat’s first sessions and check the unit’s behavior around the entrance.

For a household with both kittens and adult cats, PETKIT advises Kitten Protection Mode. It disables automatic and periodic cleaning, which is worth knowing before you set the unit up for a mixed household.

What the independent test and owner comments show
The Cats.com review by Katelynn Sobus was published and updated on December 10, 2025. It is a single reviewer’s multi-week experience, not a reliability study or a head-to-head benchmark.
Cat acceptance was mixed in her household. Smaller cats used the unit, while her cats over ten pounds tended to ignore it. This is one household’s observation, and it should not be generalized to all larger cats. The customer comments excerpted in the same review include an auto-detection complaint and a complaint about fit for a larger cat. They are anecdotal and do not establish failure rates.
Comparing it with other automatic litter boxes
No sufficiently sourced head-to-head test of the PuraMax 2 against other automatic litter boxes was identified. If you are comparing models, use the same criteria for each one:
- Cat age and size fit, measured against each manufacturer’s stated limits
- Usable entrance and interior space for your cat’s size
- Floor and clearance requirements
- Litter compatibility, including particle-size limits
- Cleaning and emptying workload
- Waste bin capacity and the conditions behind any stated interval
- Recurring costs for odor-control consumables and replacement parts
- App features and offline behavior
- Current price, warranty and support in your market
Verdict
The PuraMax 2 is a reasonable choice for an adult cat within its weight range, on a hard floor with the clearance PETKIT specifies, and with a litter that fits the included sifter. Its daily scooping is the strongest part of the independent evidence. Its weak point is the periodic emptying and deep clean, which the tester found tedious. Cat acceptance is the real open question: some cats, especially larger ones, may not use it. Confirm the current price and warranty with your seller before buying, and keep your old box until you know your cat will use the new one.
