A dog found tied up and badly hurt in Brooklyn in January 2025 went from emergency care to a monitored rehabilitation program, then to the ASPCA’s Adoption Center, and in May 2025 she was adopted by a family who renamed her Silia. She was first called Seal. The details below come from the ASPCA’s own story, published November 5, 2025, which includes the adopter’s account. They describe one dog’s outcome as her family told it, not a follow-up study or a prediction for other rescued dogs.

How Seal was found and where she went first

According to the ASPCA, NYPD officers found a medically compromised dog tied up in Brooklyn in January 2025. The dog was named Seal at intake. She weighed 38 pounds, was underweight, had multiple penetrating wounds consistent with dog bites, and had extensive skin loss with exposed muscle on both hind legs.

Her care moved through several facilities in a fixed order:

  1. NYPD recovery, Brooklyn (January 2025): the dog was found tied up and transported for care.
  2. Queens Animal Care Center: the first shelter stop after the rescue.
  3. Veterinary Emergency Group: urgent medical treatment.
  4. ASPCA Animal Hospital: continued medical care, including wound management and a carefully managed refeeding plan.
  5. ASPCA Animal Recovery Center: once she was medically stable, rehabilitation, wound care and weight monitoring.
  6. ASPCA Adoption Center: she moved here in March 2025.

The story does not give exact dates for each transfer, so only the January rescue and the March move to the Adoption Center should be treated as dated points.

Recovery and rehabilitation

Seal’s first priority was wound management, and her weight was managed with a refeeding plan rather than an ordinary feeding schedule. The ASPCA says her history of food access was unknown, so the team used a modified plan built around her condition. That detail matters: the plan was designed for this dog’s situation and should not be read as feeding guidance for other underweight dogs.

The ASPCA reports that she spent nearly two months in rehabilitation before she was ready for adoption. The table summarizes the stages as the story describes them.

Stage Location Timing as reported What the ASPCA describes
Rescue Brooklyn, found by NYPD January 2025 Tied up, medically compromised, 38 lb, underweight
Initial shelter and urgent care Queens Animal Care Center; Veterinary Emergency Group Not stated Intake, then urgent treatment
Hospital care ASPCA Animal Hospital Not stated Wound management and a managed refeeding plan
Rehabilitation ASPCA Animal Recovery Center Nearly two months, after she was medically stable Wound care and weight monitoring
Adoption ASPCA Adoption Center March 2025 move; adopted May 2025 Profile listed; family met her with their older dog

How her new family found her

Sean C. found Seal’s adoption profile while he was looking for a second dog for his household. The household includes his children and an older dog, Jackson. He and his family met Seal at the Adoption Center with Jackson present, and they adopted her in May 2025.

They renamed her Silia, choosing a name that kept some resemblance to Seal. The family’s stated reason was simple: “We knew she was the dog for us because of how much of a mush she is,” Sean C. said in the ASPCA story.

Life with Silia, as her family describes it

Sean says Silia was shy when she first arrived home, then became affectionate and eager to stay close to the family. He says she enjoys tug-of-war and chasing a ball. The ASPCA reports that she learned to play gently with Jackson and that the family later adopted a younger dog, Skylar, whose energy matches hers.

These are the family’s observations, reported by the ASPCA. The story does not include a veterinary follow-up, behavior assessment or independent check on her health since adoption, so it does not establish how she is doing today. The article is dated November 2025, which is the most recent point the account covers.

Why the refeeding plan was a medical decision

Dr. Kovach, Director of Veterinary Services at the ASPCA Animal Recovery Center, explains the risk in the ASPCA story: “Refeeding syndrome is potentially fatal.” After prolonged starvation, quickly reintroducing full calories can cause dangerous metabolic and fluid changes. This is why Seal’s refeeding was managed step by step by veterinary staff. Owners of thin or recently rescued dogs should work with their own veterinarian on any feeding change, not copy a rescue’s protocol.

What this story does and does not establish

  • Established by the ASPCA account: the January 2025 rescue, the injuries and weight at intake, the sequence of care, the nearly two-month rehabilitation, the March move to the Adoption Center and the May 2025 adoption.
  • Adopter’s account: Silia’s personality, her play preferences and her relationships with Jackson and Skylar come from Sean C. and the ASPCA’s description of him, not from an independent observer.
  • Not established: long-term health, any medical outcome after November 2025, or how typical this result is for rescued dogs with similar injuries.

The story names no products. Sean’s mention of tug-of-war and ball-chasing is simply part of how the family describes her play, and nothing in the account tests or endorses equipment for recovering dogs.
