1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou are ready to own a pet when you can answer yes to four questions before the animal arrives: Will my home, schedule, and household agreement support this animal for its whole life? Can I pay for routine and unexpected care? Is my home prepared before the first day? And have I named the people who will care for the animal when I cannot? The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) frames the decision plainly in its guidance “Selecting a pet dog”: “When you choose a pet, you are promising to care for it for its entire life.” The steps below turn that promise into a practical pre-adoption checklist for dogs and cats, the two species the main guidance covers.
Assess readiness and fit before you commit
A pet depends on its owner for food, shelter, companionship, exercise, and physical and mental health for the animal’s whole life. Before choosing an animal, work through the questions below with everyone who will live in the home.
- Housing: Will the home still suit an animal in five or ten years? Consider a move, a landlord’s pet rules, and whether a yard or stairs will be available.
- Schedule: Who is home during the day, and who covers evenings, weekends, and travel?
- Household agreement: Does everyone want the animal? Has each adult agreed to share daily care and costs?
- Allergies and constraints: Does anyone have allergies, a physical limitation, or a medical condition that a pet could affect?
- Existing animals: How might current pets react to a newcomer?
- Future changes: How could a job change, a new baby, or an illness affect the time and money available for care?
- Backup care: Who will care for the animal if you are sick, traveling, or unexpectedly unavailable?
Puppy or adult dog
A puppy generally needs more time for housetraining, socialization, feeding, and supervision. An adult dog may already have some training, although its history and temperament still need to be understood before you bring it home. Neither choice is automatically the better one; the question is which demands your household can meet consistently.
Match the animal to your household, not to its appearance
Compare activity level, grooming needs, size, and temperament with the people and routines you already have. Choosing on looks alone is a common route to a mismatch. Children may take part in caring for a pet, but an available adult must supervise and remain responsible for the animal.

- Food and appropriate housing
- Routine veterinary visits
- Emergency treatment
- Grooming and boarding
- Licensing and identification
- Sterilization
- Training
- Accessories and supplies
No single annual total applies to every pet. Costs vary by animal, age, health, and location, and no reliable general figure for ownership costs was established in the sources reviewed here, so avoid relying on any published average as your number. Instead, ask local veterinary practices for estimates of preventive services, and decide in advance how you would pay for emergency care.

Comparing options when you are choosing among real animals
Choices between puppies and adult dogs, between dogs and cats, and between animals of different sizes, energy levels, grooming needs, and medical histories should be judged against the same question: how well does the specific animal’s care demand fit your household’s time, housing, budget, experience, other pets, and access to veterinary care? The guidance reviewed here does not support a universal ranking of species or breeds, so a cat is not automatically easier than a dog, and a larger dog is not automatically harder to keep than a smaller one.
