Yogi brought joy back to his adoptive home by settling in slowly. He was nervous at first, and it took about a week before he was comfortable enough to climb onto a bed. His adoptive family, Leah N. and her children, kept the house calm, used treats to build his confidence on the stairs, and gave him time. By the end of his first weeks, he was a cuddler who slept with Leah and her other dog, Pearl, and Pearl had become more playful. The story, published by the ASPCA on October 22, 2025, is a first-hand family account, not a general study of how dogs adjust, so its details describe one dog and one household.
Where Yogi came from
Yogi was among the animals the ASPCA cared for after Hurricane Helene in September 2024. The organization ran a temporary emergency shelter in Conover, North Carolina. According to the ASPCA’s profile, that operation helped reunite animals with their owners and placed 126 unowned animals into homes through partner shelters. When the temporary shelter closed, the ASPCA moved 19 remaining unowned animals, Yogi among them, to its recovery facility in Ohio. The profile does not give the closing date of the North Carolina operation.
His time at the recovery facility
ASPCA animal placement coordinator Taylor McLagan described Yogi as “just an overall fun and happy boy.” The profile reports that he got along well with other dogs and attended more than 150 playgroups while he was at the facility. That figure describes Yogi’s own experience there, not how many playgroups the facility ran overall.
How the match happened
Leah first saw Yogi in a Facebook post. She noticed that he resembled Waffles, her dog who had died recently. Her daughter Nora also saw the post, and the family arranged a visit. They took Yogi home the same day they met him.

The story is clear that the resemblance drew the family to him, but the family also said they came to see Yogi as an individual with his own personality. Adopting a dog because he reminds you of a lost pet is an understandable starting point. The profile suggests the family’s attachment grew because of who Yogi turned out to be.
The first weeks: what the family saw and did
The profile describes a dog who was nervous in the car and during his first weeks. He startled at loud noises and at the television, and at first he avoided stairs, couches, and beds. The family’s response was low-key:

- Keep the home calm. The family limited sudden noise and kept routines steady while Yogi got used to the house.

- Let the bed come later. In Leah’s words: “We used treats to help him get comfortable with stairs, and after about a week, he finally launched himself into bed.”
- Let closeness develop on its own. Over time Yogi became a cuddler and began sleeping with Leah and Pearl.
The profile does not name a treat brand or a type of treat, so nothing here should be read as an endorsement of a particular product. The lesson is simply that rewarding a nervous dog for small steps, such as going up one stair, gave him a way to build confidence at his own pace.
What changed at home
Leah works from home three days a week, and Yogi stays beside her during those days. Nora and another family member, August, help feed him and take him outside, and Josey takes him on long walks. The household therefore shares his care, and he has a steady companion during the workday.

The bond you build makes every bit of effort worth it.”

What prospective adopters can take from Yogi’s story
Leah’s account offers a practical picture of what the first weeks can look like. It is not a timetable that every dog will follow. The lessons that carry across households are these:
- Expect a nervous dog to need time before he is comfortable with stairs, furniture, and the bed.
- Keep noise and sudden changes low while the dog is still learning the house.
- Use small rewards for small progress, and let the dog move on his own schedule.
- Plan for patience from every person in the household, not only the dog.
- Remember that a second dog may respond to a new companion in ways you do not predict, as Pearl did.
Where to adopt or foster
The ASPCA’s story closes with a call to consider adopting or fostering, or otherwise supporting shelter animals that need a home. The profile points to ASPCA locations in New York City, Weaverville, North Carolina, and Columbus, Ohio, along with local shelters. Shelter availability changes often, and the profile was published in October 2025, so check each organization’s current adoptable-animal listings before you plan a visit. Before you choose a dog, consider the animal’s needs and temperament and whether your household has the time to help him settle in.
