The veterinary guidance and the systematic review most relevant to cats do not show that spinal or joint manipulation relieves pain in cats, and the 2021 review included no clinical study in cats. That is not proof the treatment never helps any cat. It means the reviewed clinical evidence cannot establish a benefit for cats, so the decision should start with your cat’s veterinarian.
What the veterinary evidence says
Two sources carry most of the weight here. They differ in date and scope, and the difference matters for how you read them.
| Source | Date | What it covers | What it says about cats |
|---|---|---|---|
| AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines for Dogs and Cats | 2015 | Pain management guidance from the American Animal Hospital Association and the American Association of Feline Practitioners | The task force did not find sufficient evidence to support chiropractic care for pain management at that time |
| Haussler et al., Animals, systematic review of musculoskeletal mobilization and manipulation in veterinary medicine | Published 2021; searched studies from 1980 through 2020 | Peer-reviewed clinical studies of manipulation and mobilization techniques | No feline clinical study among the 14 included studies; no cat-specific treatment effect reported |
The 2015 guideline
The AAHA/AAFP Pain Management Guidelines Task Force wrote: “This Task Force has not found sufficient, reliable, noncontradictory evidence for the use of chiropractic care for pain management in veterinary medicine at this time.” That is the assessment of a guideline task force published in 2015. It is not a newly issued 2026 guideline, and it should not be presented as one. The guideline is available as a 2015 AAHA/AAFP pain management PDF.
The 2021 systematic review
The review by Haussler, Hesbach, Romano, Goff and Bergh searched peer-reviewed studies published from 1980 through 2020 and kept 14 clinical studies for analysis. Its authors reported that study quality and outcomes varied and that firm conclusions were difficult to draw. Its search term for cats also picked up laboratory work on cats’ tissues and physiology. Those basic science experiments were excluded, so they should not be read as trials on pet cats. The full paper is at mdpi.com.

What happens during a chiropractic appointment?
The American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA) describes animal chiropractic as adjustments to the vertebral and other joints, preceded by an examination. According to the association’s Find a Doctor page, accessed October 7, 2026, that examination may include:
- A neurological assessment
- Gait and stance analysis
- Palpation of the spine and joints
- Review of the patient history and any prior test results
This is the association’s description of its method. It does not show that the method is effective for any feline condition.

Is chiropractic safe for cats?
The available sources do not establish a reliable rate of adverse events from chiropractic treatment in cats. That means the risk is unmeasured, not known to be zero. Neither “safe” nor “dangerous” is a supported label for feline chiropractic. Before any complementary treatment is considered, a veterinarian should examine the cat and discuss the risks, the expected benefits, the alternatives, and the evidence that applies to that specific problem.

- New pain or sensitivity when handled
- Limping or a change in how the cat walks or stands
- Weakness in the legs
- Difficulty jumping onto furniture it used to reach easily
- A general drop in activity or willingness to move
A complementary treatment should not delay diagnosis or evidence-based pain care. Cats hide pain well, so a change in behavior is often the first clinical sign.

- What evidence applies to cats with this condition, as opposed to evidence from humans, horses, or laboratory models?
- What improvement will be measured, and how?
- What potential harms are known, and how will they be monitored?
- When will treatment stop, or when will the cat be reassessed?
- Does the practitioner hold a veterinary or chiropractic license, and what relevant training do they have?
On credentials, AVCA states that its ACCC credential is voluntary and distinct from licensure. It does not replace applicable licensing or legal requirements, and it does not by itself show that a treatment works. The association’s certification information explains the credential’s scope.

Home support for cats with arthritis
For cats with degenerative joint disease, the 2015 AAHA/AAFP guidelines say that ramps and throw rugs can improve mobility and abilities at home. A cat ramp or pet steps can therefore be a practical environmental adaptation, especially for reaching a favorite bed, window, or couch.
This is a home-access change. It is not a treatment for pain, not a chiropractic device, and not a substitute for veterinary assessment. Choose a surface the cat can grip, and place it where the cat already tries to jump.
