Yes, a dog should wear a properly fitted life jacket on a boat, even a dog that swims well. Beyond flotation, boating safety for dogs comes down to a few habits: introduce the boat gradually, never tether the dog to the craft, carry fresh water so the dog does not drink from the lake or sea, watch for overheating, and keep fuel and cleaning chemicals out of reach. Most of the specific guidance below is written for dogs, since that is where the published advice is most detailed. Other pets need their own planning with a veterinarian.
Why a life jacket matters even for strong swimmers
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) states in its guidance “Boating Safety for Pets,” dated July 15, 2025: “Even dogs that are confident swimmers can become disoriented or tired in an emergency, so a life vest is always wise.” (https://www.aspca.org/news/boating-safety-pets) The American Kennel Club (AKC) makes the same recommendation for dogs on boats, including dogs that swim confidently, for the same reason: an emergency can leave an animal exhausted or confused in the water. (https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/tips-for-taking-your-dog-out-on-the-water/)
Be clear about what a dog vest is. Pet life vests are not in the same regulatory category as Coast Guard-approved human personal flotation devices (PFDs). A vest can be sold and used as a pet flotation aid, but it should not be described as “Coast Guard approved” on the basis of human PFD rules. The U.S. Coast Guard’s human life jacket guidance covers user size, activity, serviceable condition, adjustment, and in-water fit testing for people, not pets. How a dog life jacket should fit
Sizing differs from brand to brand, and the published research does not establish a universal canine sizing standard. Use the manufacturer’s sizing chart, measure your dog at the girth and chest as the chart directs, and then check the fit on the dog itself. Look for the following:

- Dog Life Jacket: Maximum-buoyancy vest for large dogs (28–32" girth) of all swimming skill levels; supports without restricting movement; ideal for pool, lake, beach, or boat
- Secure, Easy Fit: Instant security with adjustable straps and quick-release buckles for easy on/off; see size chart and fitting video for guidance
- Durable & Lightweight: Ripstop material with thick foam padding and reinforced stitching for long-lasting comfort and strength
- Head Support & Rescue Handle: Front float helps support the head and neck; strong top safety handle for lifting and assisting your dog in an emergency
- High Visibility: Bright color with reflective accents for easily spotting your dog in low light and in all types of water, from pools to lakes
- Snug, adjustable straps. The vest should stay in place when the dog moves, shakes, or jumps, without restricting breathing, the front legs, or the neck.
- A sturdy lifting handle. A handle on the back of the vest gives you something to grip if you need to pull the dog toward the boat. Test that the stitching and handle are firmly attached.
- Visibility. Bright colors or reflective strips help rescuers and other boaters spot a dog in rough or low-light water.
- Coverage that fits the dog’s build. Deep-chested, heavy, or very small dogs can slip out of ill-fitting vests, so a snug check after the first wear matters more than the size label alone.
Get the dog used to the vest on land
ASPCA recommends letting the dog become accustomed to the vest on land before the trip. Put it on at home for short periods, reward calm behavior, and increase the time gradually. A dog that already tolerates the vest at home is far less likely to panic or fight it when the boat is moving.
Introducing your dog to the boat
- Walk the dog onto the boat while it is docked or on shore, so the first encounter happens on stable ground.
- Let the dog sniff the deck, seats, and cabin with its vest on, and give treats for calm behavior.
- Keep the first outing short and calm, in sheltered water if possible.
- If the dog shows distress, such as trembling, hiding, or persistent whining, pause and return to the dock rather than forcing it to continue.
- Build up the length of each trip only after the dog settles quickly on board.
Keep the dog supervised and untethered
Keep the dog in sight and under close supervision at all times, including when the boat is anchored. AKC boating guidance warns against tethering a dog to the boat, a kayak, or a raft, because a tether can trap or injure the animal if the craft capsizes. (https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/home-living/boating-kayaking-with-dogs/) A dog that is loose on deck can still be a hazard, so use a stable, non-slip bed or mat in a spot where it cannot slip overboard during a sudden turn.

Plan how to get the dog back aboard
Before you leave the dock, decide how you will retrieve a dog that goes into the water. A vest handle helps, but the realistic question is whether you can lift the animal safely. Consider the dog’s weight, your own strength and back condition, and the height of the boat’s gunwale or swim platform. For a large dog, a boarding ramp, swim ladder, or a helper on board may be more practical than a lift. Practice with the vest on in shallow, calm water, so the method is tested before you need it.
Fresh water and drinking
Bring fresh drinking water, a bowl, and enough for the entire outing plus a margin for delays. Discourage the dog from drinking lake, river, or ocean water. Those waters can carry bacteria, parasites, pollutants, and harmful algal blooms. Follow local public-health warnings and avoid water that has an advisory posted. ASPCA recommends rinsing pets after swimming to remove contaminants from the coat and skin. (https://www.aspca.org/news/boating-safety-pets) AKC likewise recommends fresh water over lake or ocean water. (https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/health/tips-for-taking-your-dog-out-on-the-water/)

Heat, shade, and sun protection
A boat can concentrate heat and glare, and shade is often limited. ASPCA identifies excessive panting, drooling, and lethargy as signs of heatstroke. If you see them, move the dog to a cooler or shaded place and offer water. Provide shade and rest breaks on every outing, and plan breaks on longer trips.
Sunscreen for exposed skin
Dogs with light or thin skin or short coats can burn. ASPCA advises using an animal-formulated sunscreen and following veterinary recommendations. It warns against human sunscreen, because ingestion can harm pets, and dogs often lick off what they are given. A protective pet shirt can be an alternative for dogs that lick, but only if it does not cause overheating.

Fuel, antifreeze, and cleaning products
Store fuel, antifreeze, and cleaners in sealed, pet-proof storage. Keep the dog away from the area during fueling and while cleaning or treating the hull. Spilled antifreeze is a particular concern because it tastes sweet to some animals and is highly toxic. If you suspect a dog has ingested a potentially toxic substance, contact a veterinarian or ASPCA Poison Control right away. ASPCA’s guidance on this point is at https://www.aspca.org/news/boating-safety-pets.
Check local and rental rules
Boating rules vary by location, and the published sources do not establish a single set of pet-specific boating laws that applies everywhere in the United States. Check the rules of the state or local boating authority for the waters you plan to use. If you rent a boat, ask the operator whether dogs are permitted, whether they require a life jacket, and whether any restrictions apply to particular areas.
