This article walks through that process using the published adoption rules and outcome reports of Lawrence Humane, a local shelter, and separates what those reports show from what they cannot prove.
One note on the headline: this article does not attribute a view to any individual named Lawrence. The evidence here comes from Lawrence Humane’s own published pages, and the figures below are the shelter’s account of its own work, not independent evaluations.
What adopting from Lawrence Humane involves
Lawrence Humane’s adoption page sets out the basic requirements and offers walk-in appointments daily from noon to 6 p.m. Check the adoption page before you visit, because hours, event terms and inclusions can change.
- Confirm the visit window. Walk-in appointments are listed for daily noon to 6 p.m. Call or check the adoption page on the day you plan to go.
- Bring valid photo ID. Adopters must be at least 18 years old and show a valid photo ID.
- Choose an animal and complete the adoption. Ask staff about the animal’s temperament, health history and what kind of household it has done best in.
- Take the animal home with the right transport gear. Dogs must leave with a collar and leash; cats must leave in a carrier. Details are in the next section.
- Book the included wellness exam within 10 days. The adoption page describes a free wellness exam at a participating local veterinary hospital, to be scheduled within 10 days of adoption.
What the adoption package includes
According to the same adoption page, each adoption includes spay or neuter, age-appropriate vaccines, microchipping and a bag of Hill’s Pet Nutrition Science Diet food. Cat adoptions also include a World’s Best Cat Litter adoption kit. These are the shelter’s stated inclusions at the time of its page, not a standard that other shelters are known to follow, so ask the shelter what applies to the specific animal you choose.

What to bring home: a dog or cat checklist
The shelter’s requirements are narrow, which makes preparation simple. Gear you already own is acceptable, and the shelter says you may bring your own.
Dogs
- A collar and a leash, both in place before you leave the building.
- A standard non-retractable leash. Lawrence Humane explicitly recommends against retractable leashes, which give less control in a busy parking lot or on a sidewalk.
Cats
- A carrier for the trip home. You may use one you already own.
- A litter setup ready at home. The adoption kit described above may cover the first supply, but confirm what your cat will receive.
What the fee-waived adoption events report
Lawrence Humane has run fee-waived Clear the Shelter events, and it publishes placement counts for each one. The most recent event with published placement figures in the material reviewed for this article is the 2023 event.
| Event | Date | Animals placed in homes (shelter count) | Shelter’s reported observation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear the Shelter 2022 | August 27, 2022 | 159 | Relied on foster homes ahead of the event, and also took in animals from rural communities and smaller shelters |
| Clear the Shelter 2023 | August 26, 2023 | 163 | No higher-than-usual surrender numbers observed after the event |
These are event counts, not controlled comparisons. They do not show how many of those adoptions would have happened without a fee waiver, and the shelter’s observation about surrenders is its own report for the period after each event. It should not be read as a general rule that fee waivers do not increase surrenders at other shelters.

Shelter capacity and live release
Lawrence Humane’s Our Impact page reports a 95% live release rate for 2024 and says that transfers from low-capacity shelters saved more than 1,000 adoptable pets in its region. Both figures are the organization’s own 2024 reporting. The page does not establish them as a national rate, and transfers from other shelters are a regional program, not a measure of how every shelter performs.

Adoption is one way to help a shelter, and it is not the only one. The options differ mainly in time commitment and in how much your household has to be ready.
Volunteer for a dog day-out
Lawrence Humane describes dog day-outs as a way to get dogs out of the kennel for short outings. Its July 2025 report on Mass Street Mutts gives the June 2025 figures: 68 outings involving 45 dogs, with 17 of those dogs adopted that month. The report does not show that the outings caused those adoptions, so treat the figures as activity data rather than proof of effect.

Foster
Fostering keeps an animal in a home until it is adopted, which is how Lawrence Humane described its preparation ahead of its 2022 fee-waived event. Fostering can be a lower-commitment route than adoption, but it still requires a space at home and a willingness to handle the animal’s needs until placement.
Support the program
The Mass Street Mutts report also says VCA Charities supported staff training and supplied program equipment. This is a documented partnership described by the shelter, not an open grant or a consumer program you can apply to.
Is adoption right for your household?
Shelter adoption tends to work best when you can answer these questions honestly before you visit:
Quick Recap
- Can you commit to the animal for its expected lifespan, including vet care and food costs?
- Do you have a leash, carrier or litter setup ready for the first day?
- Is your household ready for the animal’s temperament, not just its appearance?
- If the answer to any of these is no, a day-out volunteer or foster role may let you help now and adopt later.
