Finding Your Perfect Pooch During Adopt a Shelter Dog Month: A Practical Guide

The best shelter dog is the one whose energy, temperament and care needs fit your routine and household. Here is how to describe your life, judge individual dogs, and prepare before you bring one home.

The dog most likely to work out is the one whose energy, temperament and care needs fit your actual routine, household and expectations. You find that dog by describing your life honestly to shelter staff, then judging each individual dog on its own behavior rather than on its label, age or appearance. October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month, so this is a good time to start, but the steps below apply in any season.

What the pandemic-era example shows, and what it doesn’t

An October 2020 Best Friends Animal Society article describes an adopter who took in a foster dog during COVID-19 restrictions, with a video-chat introduction standing in for an in-person meeting. The article also says many organizations were running virtual meet-and-greets at that time. That is a useful account of how one placement happened in 2020. It is not a description of how adoptions work now. Some organizations have kept remote meetings and trial fostering, some have dropped them, and others have changed their processes several times since. The only reliable way to know is to ask the organization you are considering.

Step 1: Describe your life before you look at dogs

Shelter staff can only match you well if they have an accurate picture of your household. Before your first visit or call, write down the following:

  • Daily routine: how many hours a day the dog would be alone, and whether anyone is home at midday.
  • Activity level: whether you walk, run, hike or mostly want a companion for short outings, and how much exercise you can realistically keep up on a bad week, not just a good one.
  • Household members: everyone who lives with you, including children and their ages, and anyone who visits often.
  • Other animals: existing pets, plus animals the dog will regularly meet, such as a neighbor’s cat or a dog at a daycare.
  • Affection and companionship: whether you want a dog that sticks close, one that is independent, or somewhere in between.
  • Training: how much time and patience you can give to training, and whether you have done it before.
  • Housing: whether you rent, the space you have, and any restrictions on dogs or breeds.

Best Friends advises sharing this context openly, because a dog who would be fine in one home may be a poor fit in another. The organization’s guidance also suggests considering whether a quieter adult or senior dog, a higher-energy dog, or a dog who prefers to be the only pet better fits your real life, and it encourages staying open to different ages, sizes and breeds rather than setting a narrow filter. Those are prompts for a conversation with the shelter, not guarantees about how any individual dog will behave.

Step 2: Evaluate the individual dog, not the label

A breed name or a photo tells you very little about how a dog will act in your living room. Judge the dog by what the shelter or foster home has observed and by what you see yourself.

Energy and exercise

Ask how much the dog walks, plays and settles down indoors. A dog that seems calm in a kennel may be under-stimulated, and one that is loud at the front desk may settle quickly once it is out of the stress of the shelter. Ask what the dog does on a walk, not only whether it walks.

Temperament with people and other animals

Ask how the dog reacts to strangers, to handling, to being left alone, and to other dogs and cats. If you have children, ask specifically how the dog behaves around them, and involve them in meeting the dog if the organization allows it. Staff observations are useful, but they describe behavior in a particular setting. Treat them as strong evidence, not a promise.

Age and care needs

Puppies, adult dogs and seniors each come with different routines. Ask about the dog’s known health history, any medications or special diets, and any care needs that may grow over time. Older dogs often need less exercise but may need more veterinary attention.

Deal-breakers and flexibility

Decide in advance which traits you truly cannot live with, such as a strong prey drive around cats, or a dog that cannot be left alone for more than a few hours. Keep the list short and specific. Being flexible on coat color, size or age often widens the field considerably without costing you the things that matter.

Step 3: Find out how the organization works right now

Processes differ from shelter to shelter and rescue to rescue. Before you commit time, check the following on the organization’s website or by calling:

Prepare your questions before you contact the team. A written list keeps the conversation focused, and it helps you compare two organizations on the same points.

Time, space and money before you commit

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) advises thinking through the space, time and finances a dog will need, including costs that you do not plan for, such as an emergency vet visit. Two questions help:

  • Can I cover routine care, food, grooming and training every month for the dog’s expected life, not just the first few weeks?
  • If an unexpected illness or injury costs several hundred dollars or more, do I have a plan to pay for it?

Pet health insurance is one way to plan for veterinary costs. Compare policies carefully, because coverage limits, exclusions and waiting periods vary by provider. The ASPCA’s own guidance points to pet insurance providers and names ASPCA Pet Health Insurance as its exclusive pet-insurance partner.

Starter supplies and a safe home

Have the basics ready before the dog arrives so you are not shopping on the day you bring it home. The ASPCA’s list includes:

  • A bed in a quiet spot
  • Toys suited to the dog’s size and chewing habits
  • Treats and food that match the diet the shelter recommends
  • A leash, a harness and a collar that fit well and are comfortable for daily use
  • Identification tags with your contact information

Choose the leash, harness and collar for fit, comfort and safe use with your dog’s size and strength. Remove hazards like loose electrical cords, medications, toxic plants and small objects a dog could swallow. Block off a room or area where a new dog can settle if you cannot supervise it fully.

The first weeks: adjustment and the vet visit

Many newly adopted dogs need time to settle, and some take several weeks before they show their normal personality. The ASPCA advises allowing that time, and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recommends scheduling a veterinary examination soon after you bring the dog home. 1. On arrival, take the dog to its toilet area, then into a quiet room with water and a bed. Keep the first day calm.
  2. Establish a simple routine for meals, walks and rest, and keep it consistent for the first few weeks.
  3. Do not force interactions with visitors, other pets or children. Let the dog approach on its own terms.
  4. Book a veterinary examination within the first days or week, and bring any records the shelter gave you.
  5. Confirm that your identification tags and microchip details are current.
  6. Call the organization if behavior concerns persist. Most organizations want to hear about problems early.

Involve everyone in the household in the plan. Consistent rules from every person make the adjustment easier for the dog.

Figures worth knowing, with their dates

Two numbers often appear in shelter-adoption coverage. Both are historical, and neither should be treated as a current count.

  • ASPCA CEO Matt Bershadker cited approximately 3.3 million homeless dogs in U.S. animal shelters in an October 9, 2017 article. That figure reflects 2017 and is not a current total.
  • Best Friends Animal Society reported more than 3,100 shelter partners in its October 2020 article. That was the organization’s count at the time and is not a verified current figure.

Neither number should drive your decision. What matters is whether a particular dog fits your home.

A simple checklist before you say yes

  • You have described your routine, household and other animals to the adoption team.
  • You have judged the dog on observed behavior, energy and care needs.
  • You have confirmed the organization’s current meet-and-greet and fostering options.
  • You have budgeted for routine and unexpected veterinary costs.
  • Your starter supplies, safe home and identification are ready.
  • You have booked a veterinary examination for soon after arrival.

If most of these boxes are ticked and the dog still feels like the wrong fit, it is reasonable to keep searching. A patient search usually produces a better match than a fast one.
