Open Farm Cat Food Review (2026): Traceable Sourcing, Nutrition Claims, and Whether the Price Is Justified

Open Farm offers a detailed ingredient-origin and lot-level transparency tool, but its nutrition claims are formula-specific and its premium price needs a cost-per-calorie check.

Open Farm’s most concrete and checkable claim is traceability. The company says its transparency tool shows where ingredients come from, lot-specific safety test results, third-party certification details and product carbon information. Its nutrition claims are real but specific to each formula, and the company’s own disclosures do not show that its food is nutritionally better than other complete cat foods. Whether the premium price is justified therefore depends on how much you value that traceability and testing, and on current prices that change by retailer, bag size and date.

What Open Farm’s traceability tool shows

Open Farm’s transparency tool is the feature most worth examining. According to the company, it reports four things for its products:

  • Geographic origin of each ingredient
  • Lot-specific safety test results
  • Third-party certification information
  • Carbon emissions associated with the product

The company says the tool has provided ingredient origins since 2017. Location detail depends on where the ingredient comes from. For North American ingredients, the origin may be given as a state or province. For internationally sourced ingredients, it is given as the country of origin. Product pages include a lot-code entry point, so you can look up the test results for a specific bag rather than a generic product line.

That is a meaningful level of detail for a pet food. It is still the company’s own presentation. The sources behind this review do not show an independent audit of every origin or sourcing statement, so treat the tool as a disclosure you can read and compare, not as third-party verification of each claim.

Supplier, testing and manufacturing claims

Open Farm’s FAQ describes supplier standards, ingredient traceability, a test-and-hold process and third-party laboratory testing. It states that its animal proteins come from USDA-approved, human-grade facilities and that its manufacturing partners hold food-safety certifications. These are company statements. They describe the system Open Farm says it runs. They are not independent certification of each finished recipe, and a food-safety certificate held by a manufacturing partner does not, on its own, confirm what is in a given bag.

What the “complete and balanced” statement tells you

Traceability answers where ingredients came from. It does not answer whether the food meets a cat’s nutritional needs. That question is answered by the adequacy statement. The Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) explains that the adequacy statement identifies the pet and life stage a food is suited for. Open Farm says its recipes follow AAFCO cat food nutrient profiles, and that the package and product page state whether a recipe is complete and balanced or intended only for supplemental feeding, along with species and life stage.

Open Farm Grain Free Dry Cat Food, Wild-Caught Salmon Kibble, 4lb Bag
  • Complete & Balanced Diet - Dry food for cats delivering optimal nutrition for your favorite feline from wild-caught salmon paired with functional ingredients.
  • Supports Healthy Digestion - Keep your kitty's tummy happy with this grain free cat food made up of a nutritious combination of proteins & functional ingredients that helps support healthy digestion.
  • Essential Nutrients From Functional Ingredients - Functional ingredients like non-GMO pumpkin and dandelion greens provide the essential nutrients cats need from their diet.
  • Know What's In Their Bowl - Formulated without corn, wheat, soy, or artificial flavors, preservatives or additives, just 100% traceable ingredients. No rendered poultry or meat meals either.
  • Peace Of Mind For Pet Parents - We use 3rd party certified ingredients, vetted and tested, and you can trace every single ingredient to its geographic origin.

The wording is not the same across the range. Two Open Farm products cited in the company’s own materials show the difference:

Product (as named by the company) Format Life stage stated Where the statement appears
Wild-Caught Salmon dry cat food Dry Formulated to meet AAFCO Cat Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages Official product page
Chicken & Beef pâté cat food Pâté (wet) Formulated for adult maintenance Official nutrient-profile sheet

The practical lesson is that a brand-level claim tells you little. A kitten, a senior cat and an adult cat may need different formulas, so check the statement on the exact bag or product page you are considering.

Rank #3
Open Farm Grain Free Dry Cat Food, Turkey & Chicken Kibble, 8lb Bag
  • Complete & Balanced For Every Life Stage: Open Farm Homestead Turkey & Chicken delivers 37% minimum crude protein from GAP-certified humanely raised chicken and turkey; that means real, named protein sources your cat can thrive on through their senior years. Formulated to meet AAFCO nutritional standards for all life stages, this high-protein grain free kibble supports active, growing, and adult cats alike
  • Gentle on Sensitive Stomachs: Prebiotic fibers support healthy digestion and no corn, wheat, or soy means this grain free formula is well-suited for cats with food sensitivities. Made with a functional blend featuring non-GMO pumpkin, dandelion greens, cranberry. When switching foods, gradually mix increasing amounts over 7-10 days for a smooth transition
  • Real Meat Cats Actually Crave: Humanely raised chicken and turkey are the first ingredients, delivering the savory protein appeal that even picky indoor cats respond to. At 445 kcal per cup, a 10 lb cat needs approximately 1/2 cup daily for maintenance, meaning an 8 lb bag lasts roughly 7 weeks
  • Optimal Nutrition with Omega Fatty Acids: Guaranteed Omega-3 (min 1.3%) and Omega-6 (min 4.0%) fatty acids support a shiny coat and healthy skin. Our formula contains no artificial flavors, no artificial preservatives, and no rendered poultry or meat meals; every protein source is real and identifiable, reflecting a holistic approach to nutrition with full ingredient transparency from origin to bowl
  • Trace Every Ingredient to Its Origin: Open Farm is a Certified B Corporation committed to full transparency; scan the lot code on any bag to trace every ingredient to its geographic origin. Humanely raised chicken & turkey are Global Animal Partnership (GAP) certified, so you can feed your cat with confidence knowing exactly where each ingredient came from

How to check a formula before you buy

  1. Find the adequacy statement on the bag or in the product page’s nutrition section. Confirm it says “complete and balanced” rather than “supplemental feeding only.”
  2. Confirm the species (cat) and the life stage (all life stages, growth and reproduction, adult maintenance, or another stated stage) match your cat.
  3. Record the lot code from the bag and enter it in the transparency tool to view the lot-specific safety results.
  4. Compare the guaranteed analysis and the price per calorie with other foods that carry a comparable statement for the same life stage.

What the ingredient list cannot tell you

AAFCO notes that ingredient lists are ordered by weight but do not state the absolute amount of each ingredient. The panel tells you what is included and its rough order. It does not tell you the proportion of each ingredient, and a prominent named protein at the top of the list does not, by itself, establish the food’s overall nutritional quality.

Expertise, testing and what has not been published

Open Farm names Dr. Moran Tal-Gavriel as its in-house board-certified veterinary nutritionist. The company says she takes part in recipe development and formulation. It reports digestibility, palatability and stool studies on its products. The FAQ also says the company is running at-home feeding trials.

Open Farm’s own FAQ states: “At this time, Open Farm has not published studies in peer-reviewed journals.” That sentence is about published, peer-reviewed research. It is not a statement that the company runs no internal testing, and the company’s reported digestibility, palatability and stool work should be read as internal data that has not gone through independent peer review.

The WSAVA question

Open Farm says the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA) does not approve or certify brands, and it describes its own alignment with WSAVA selection guidance. The FAQ also says feeding trials were an exception to that prior alignment, and that at-home trials are now underway. Treat this as Open Farm’s self-assessment. It does not mean the brand is “WSAVA-approved,” because WSAVA does not grant that status.

Is the premium price justified?

“Premium” is a marketing word, not a nutrition standard. AAFCO’s consumer FAQ states: “Unlike natural and organic, ‘premium’ is a totally unregulated term in feed law.” A higher price therefore does not, by itself, mean a higher nutritional standard. It may reflect ingredient costs, testing, sourcing transparency or margin. The label cannot tell you which.

This article does not give a current price comparison between Open Farm and competing premium cat foods. Prices differ by bag size, retailer, promotion and date, and a comparison dated last year would not reliably predict today’s cost. A fair comparison needs current prices for the specific formulas and sizes you are weighing, converted into a common unit.

How to compare cost fairly

Use cost per 1,000 kcal rather than the sticker price:

  • Cost per 1,000 kcal = (bag price ÷ total kcal in the bag) × 1,000
  • Total kcal in the bag = kcal per kilogram (or per cup or per can, from the manufacturer’s stated figure) × kilograms (or cups or cans) in the bag

For example, a bag priced at $50 that contains 40,000 kcal works out to $1.25 per 1,000 kcal. These numbers are illustrative only, not Open Farm prices. Once you have that figure for each candidate, compare only foods whose adequacy statements cover the same species and life stage.

Comparison factors for a full review

Factor Where to find it What it tells you, and what it does not
Life-stage adequacy Bag or product page adequacy statement Whether the formula is complete and balanced for a stated stage. It does not rank the food against others.
Dry versus wet format Product name and packaging Changes moisture and feeding volume. It does not by itself change nutritional adequacy.
Ingredient order Ingredient panel Order by weight only. It does not give proportions.
Guaranteed analysis Label panel Minimum and maximum nutrient levels as stated by the manufacturer.
Lot-level information Transparency tool, using the lot code Company-reported safety results for that lot. Not independent verification.
Cost per 1,000 kcal Your calculation from current prices Comparable value across sizes. Requires current prices.

How to decide

  • Choose Open Farm if you want to trace ingredient origins and lot-level safety information for a specific bag, and you value a company-run formulation and testing program with an in-house veterinary nutritionist.
  • Be cautious if your main goal is a formula with independently verified feeding trial results, because the company says it has not published peer-reviewed studies and its at-home trials are still in progress.
  • Compare carefully if budget is the main constraint. A cheaper food with a matching complete and balanced statement for your cat’s life stage can meet the same basic nutritional requirement at a lower cost per calorie.
  • Check every bag. Formulas, lot results, adequacy statements and prices change, so the label and the lot code in front of you are the final authority.

Open Farm offers real transparency features that most buyers will not find elsewhere in the same detail. The disclosures show what the company says it does. They do not, on their own, show that the food is nutritionally superior or that the price is worth it for your cat.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
