A cat learns to walk into a backpack on its own by treating the backpack as an ordinary, safe object long before it is ever carried. You do this with small rewarded steps: the cat looks at the bag, sniffs it, puts a paw inside, goes in fully, and stays for a moment. You add closure and movement only after each step is relaxed. If the cat backs away, you go back one step. You never push or chase it.
Check the backpack before you start
Training fails most often because the carrier itself is wrong, not because the cat is stubborn. Cats Protection, in its carrier guide, cautions that many backpack carriers do not give a cat enough room to move or reposition. Before you begin, confirm that the bag meets these basics:
- Room to reposition. The cat should be able to turn around, shift weight, and change position with the opening in view. A bag that only fits a curled-up cat will make the cat feel trapped, which undermines voluntary entry.
- A wide, easy opening. Entry should not require squeezing or climbing. A top or front opening that stays open during training gives the cat a clear, low-pressure route in.
- Secure closures. Zips and clips must hold firmly when fastened, and you should be able to check them without startling the cat.
- Ventilation. Mesh panels or open sides should allow airflow. This matters for the trip itself, not just for training.
If the backpack fails the room test, training it harder will not fix the problem. Choose a different design, or use a hard or soft carrier for vet visits and use the backpack only for short walks once the cat is comfortable in it.
Training in stages
The AAFP and ISFM feline-friendly handling guideline (2011) describes the goal in direct terms: “The goal is for the cat to enter the carrier voluntarily.” Each stage below builds on the one before it. Move forward only when the cat is relaxed at the current stage.

Stage 1: Make the backpack a familiar object at home
Keep the backpack open and in a room the cat already uses, on the floor or a chair it visits. Do not place it on the cat’s bed or in a place the cat must pass to reach food or the litter box. Let the cat investigate without any pressure from you.
- Place familiar bedding inside if the cat already accepts it.
- Leave the bag unzipped and unused for several days so it becomes part of the furniture.
- Do not carry the bag around the house or take it outside during this stage.
Stage 2: Reward approach and partial entry
Reward calm attention near the backpack. Use high-value treats, and offer toys or catnip if the cat responds to them. The AAFP and ISFM guidance emphasizes choosing rewards that suit the individual cat, so use what your cat genuinely prefers.

- Reward the cat for looking at the bag, approaching it, and sniffing it.
- Next, reward a paw placed inside the opening.
- Then reward the cat for stepping partly in, and finally for entering fully.
- Place rewards gradually closer to the entrance and, once the cat is comfortable, just inside it. The American Animal Hospital Association’s veterinary visit guidance supports this gradual progression. Do not begin by pushing the cat in.
Stage 3: Add a cue, brief closure, and movement
Once entry is relaxed and repeatable, you can attach a cue. A short word or a clicker works well, and both are optional. Say or click at the moment the cat goes in, then reward immediately.
- Brief closure. Close the opening for a second, then open it straight away and reward. Lengthen the closure slowly over sessions.
- Short hold. Let the cat stay inside for a few seconds, then reward and let it step out whenever it chooses.
- Small movement. Lift the backpack a few centimetres, set it down, and reward. Increase the lift and the distance in tiny increments over many sessions.
- End each session while the cat is still comfortable, not after a stressful moment.
Keep sessions short and at the cat’s pace
Short sessions work better than long ones. Zoetis Petcare’s carrier guidance recommends brief, positive sessions that reinforce each incremental step and move to the next only once the current step is easy. The reviewed guidance does not establish a universal timeline, because individual cats progress at very different speeds. Measure progress by how readily the cat enters, not by the number of days elapsed.

Signs to slow down or step back
Withdrawal is information. When a cat shows stress, stop the current step and return to the last step it handled calmly. Common stress signals include crouching or freezing, flattened ears, a lashing tail, hissing, and retreating quickly from the bag. Zoetis Petcare’s guidance is explicit on this point: step back when stress appears, rather than pushing through.
- Do not chase the cat toward the bag or grab it to force entry.
- Do not stretch the closure or movement step after a cat has retreated from it.
- If progress stalls for several sessions, make the setup easier: a larger opening, more bedding, or a higher-value reward.
Preparing for a real trip
Once the cat enters and stays calmly, check the trip conditions before you go outside. The 2022 AAFP and ISFM environment guideline supports a visual cover when it helps a cat settle, but the cover must not block airflow. Ambient temperature matters too, so avoid carrying a cat in a warm or closed environment.

- The cat can reposition inside the bag with the opening in view.
- All closures are fastened and cannot be opened from inside.
- The bag has clear ventilation, and the cover, if used, leaves air paths open.
- The outdoor temperature is suitable for the cat and the trip length.
- Remove the cover or open the bag if the cat shows signs of overheating or distress.
The same 2022 guideline notes that caregivers may consider applying a synthetic feline pheromone to the carrier, bedding, or cover about 15 minutes before a veterinary visit. This is an option for travel preparation, not a requirement for teaching the cat to enter the bag.

The 2022 AAFP and ISFM interaction guideline states that “Behavioral modification using positive reinforcement to teach cats to voluntarily enter and calmly travel within their carriers is beneficial to feline welfare.” A cat that goes into its carrier willingly is easier to transport, less likely to be injured in a struggle, and more likely to stay calm when the trip ends.

Voluntary training is slower than forcing a cat in, and it is not always quick. But it produces a cat that approaches the bag on its own, which is the outcome you are after.
