Young people can help homeless pets without handling a single animal. The most accessible routes are raising money with a craft or skill, writing pet bios and making photos or videos that help adoptable animals stand out, sharing animals that need homes, and reading aloud to shelter dogs where a program allows it. Older teens can take part in virtual foster programs, and some families take in a foster animal with an adult mentor and organizational support. Whether any of these is open to a particular child depends on the local shelter or rescue, so the first step is always to ask.

The examples in this guide come from Kim McDaniel’s feature “Young people bring hope for homeless pets”, published by Best Friends Animal Society on August 17, 2026.

Check the shelter’s rules before anything else

Many shelters cannot allow volunteers under 18 to handle animals directly, and policies differ from one organization to the next. Minimum age, supervision, training, and animal-contact rules are set locally, so a rule that applies at one shelter may not apply at another. Ask before signing up, and include a parent or guardian in the conversation. Useful questions include:

  • What is the minimum volunteer age, and is it different for animal contact?
  • Does a parent or other adult need to stay on site, and who supervises the young volunteer?
  • Is there training or orientation before a young person works near animals?
  • Which roles involve no animal contact, such as fundraising, photography, or social media?
  • For fostering, what supplies, veterinary care, and mentoring does the organization provide?

Ways to help without handling animals

Fundraising with a craft or skill

Harper, age 10, volunteers with Acadiana Animal Aid. She makes bracelets to raise money. The feature reports that her fundraising went from $200 to $500 and then to $1,000, and that she exceeded her goals and helped fund specialized surgery for a pet named Weezie. Harper also promotes adoptable pets and writes thank-you cards to donors. The article does not recommend a particular product, but a bracelet-making kit for kids is one simple way to start a similar project.

Writing bios and making photos or videos

Pet bios, photographs, and short videos give adoptable animals more visibility, and they can be made at home. The feature describes a teen volunteer whose adoption post helped Peso, a 13-year-old Chihuahua, get adopted. Sara Plunk, media and programs director at S.A.V.E. Rescue Coalition, credited the post: “That single post changed Peso’s future.”

Sharing animals that need homes

Sharing an adoptable animal’s profile with friends, family, and local community groups is one of the simplest contributions. Check with the shelter first so that you post accurate details and use the photos and information the organization has approved.

Fostering: a family effort with adult guidance

Virtual fostering for ages 16 to 21

S.A.V.E. Rescue Coalition’s NextGen Junior Advisory Board pairs young volunteers with experienced foster caregivers. Participants make photos, videos, and bios that help pets be seen and adopted, and they do this without taking any animal home. Sara Plunk described the model this way: “Virtual fosters can bridge the gap for busy or overwhelmed foster families, ensuring every animal has the opportunity to be seen, celebrated, and ultimately adopted.”

Fostering with a mentor and organizational support

Lily, a college student, found a mother cat nursing five kittens in Tampa and contacted St. Francis Society Animal Rescue. The organization paired her with a mentor and provided supplies and veterinary care. She fostered the family, adopted one kitten, and helped find homes for the others. Lily said: “I love fostering because you get to give an animal a safe, loving place to stay while they wait for their home.” Amy Crosby, the organization’s president, described the value of having more people involved: “They’re perfect for socializing kittens. They have friends over, introduce them to different things. More hands means more confidence for the animals, and it divides the work so no one person has to do everything.”

What these stories do and do not show

  • The dollar and hour figures are participant-level details from one feature. They were not audited, and they do not measure the totals raised or the hours logged by any program.
  • The feature reports no national count of youth volunteers, no controlled outcome study, and no comparison between youth programs.
  • Peso’s adoption is one reported case. The feature credits a teen’s post as part of that outcome; it does not show that a single post generally leads to adoption.
  • The reading program’s effect on dogs is the feature’s description, not an independent evaluation.
  • The benefits of extra hands in fostering, such as better socialization and shared workload, are the account of St. Francis Society’s president and have not been independently evaluated.

How to start

  1. Begin with a strength. Harper’s advice to young people: “Start with something you’re good at or something you enjoy. You could make things, collect donations, volunteer, foster with your family, or even just share animals that need homes. Even something that seems little can turn into something really big. You just have to start.”
  2. Call the shelter or rescue. Use the questions in the first section to confirm minimum age, supervision, and animal-contact rules before committing to any role.
  3. Choose one small, contained task. Lily’s advice was: “Start small. You can help with adoption events, donate supplies, or even spread the word about animals who need homes. You don’t have to do something huge to make a difference.”
  4. Involve an adult from the start. A parent or guardian should be part of any plan, and for fostering, confirm the mentor, supplies, and veterinary care in advance.
